The question struck him harder than she realised.
Adrian opened his mouth, but the words did not come immediately. He worked six days a week as a personal driver for a wealthy businessman. His salary was modest, and after paying rent, buying food, covering transportation expenses, and taking care of their other needs, there was rarely much left. Still, he had never stopped trying. He had taken extra driving assignments whenever they were available. He had skipped meals on some occasions so that Vanessa could have enough money for the things she needed. He had even postponed buying himself new shoes because the old ones, although worn out, could still carry him to work. He had done all these things without complaining. Yet, standing before the woman he loved, he suddenly felt as though none of his efforts meant anything. “I work every day,” he finally said. “I leave this house early in the morning, sometimes before you wake up. I return late at night. I take every extra job I can find. I'm trying, Vanessa. I promise you, I'm trying.” She folded her arms. “Trying is not enough.” “I know.” “No, you don't know! If you knew, you wouldn't keep giving me the same excuses.” “It's not an excuse.” “Then where is the money?” Adrian lowered his eyes for a moment. That was the question he hated most because he had no answer that could satisfy her. He wished he could walk into an expensive shop, point at the bag she wanted, and pay for it without checking his bank balance. He wished he could take her to beautiful restaurants, buy her everything she admired, and give her a life without financial worries. But wishing did not create money. “I don't have enough money for that bag right now,” he admitted. “But I will work harder. I'll take more assignments and save whatever I can. I promise I'll get it for you.” Vanessa stared at him. “When?” “Soon.” “What does soon mean, Adrian? Next week? Next month? Next year?” “I can't give you an exact date, but I will do everything I can.” She shook her head in disgust. “You know what? I'm tired of hearing promises.” “Vanessa—” “No! Let me finish.” She walked toward the bedroom, and Adrian followed her. Inside, their small room looked as ordinary as the rest of the apartment. A wooden wardrobe stood against the wall, a few clothes hung behind the door, and a standing fan made a faint rattling sound as it turned from side to side. Vanessa approached the wardrobe and pulled out a handbag. It was the bag she had carried for almost two years. Although it was still usable, its colour had faded in places, and the handle showed signs of wear. She held it up. “Look at this thing!” Adrian stared at the bag. “It's still fine, Vanessa.” “Fine?” She turned to him. “You call this fine? Do you know how embarrassed I feel when I go out with my friends carrying this?” “Has anyone ever insulted you because of it?” “That's not the point!” “Then what is the point?” “The point is that I deserve better!” “You do,” Adrian replied. “You deserve better, and I want to give you better. But I need time.” “Time, time, time!” she exclaimed. “That's all you ever ask for!” She threw the handbag onto the bed. “Do you know what Patricia's boyfriend bought her last weekend? A brand-new car!” Adrian's eyebrows rose. “A car?” “Yes! A car! And her boyfriend is not even as old as you. Yet he can afford to buy her whatever she wants.” “That's good for Patricia.” Vanessa stared at him in disbelief. “That's your response?” “What do you want me to say? Her boyfriend has money. Good for them.” “I want you to ask yourself why you cannot do the same!” Adrian looked away. He knew where the conversation was going, but he had no idea how to stop it. Vanessa walked closer to him. “Adrian, be honest with me. Do you really see a future for us?” The question caught him off guard. “Of course I do.” “What kind of future?” “A good one. A peaceful one. A future where we don't have to worry about money every day.” “When will that future come?” “I don't know exactly when, but I believe it will.” She gave a humourless laugh. “You believe.” “Yes, I believe.” “Well, I cannot build my life on your beliefs!” Adrian felt a knot tighten in his chest. “Vanessa, we've been together for three years. You know where I started. You know I have never pretended to be a rich man. When we met, I was already working as a driver. I told you I wasn't wealthy, but I also told you I had dreams.” “And I believed you!” “And I'm still working toward those dreams!” “But I'm tired of waiting for them to happen!” For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Adrian wanted to remind her of all the times he had stood beside her, all the sacrifices he had made, and all the nights they had spent discussing the future they hoped to build together.Latest Chapter
NEW JOB
If Harrison ever discovered that he had left his assigned location without permission, the consequences could be serious. He couldn't allow himself to become careless. He would need to plan better, pay even closer attention to the time, and make sure any additional work could be completed without interfering with his responsibilities. For now, he had earned extra money and fulfilled his duties. He intended to keep it that way.---That evening, Adrian returned home exhausted. His arms ached from the construction work, and his shoulders felt stiff. He placed his bag beside the bed and sat down for a moment before removing his shoes. Then he remembered the money in his wallet. He opened it and counted his earnings from the construction site once more. After setting aside the amount he needed for transportation and food, he added the remainder to his handbag savings. He recorded the

he hung up the call.. " oooh no..... the battery is down....... what do I do..... I can't lose my job. ""thank God..... I have extra battery." he quickly fixed the car, and then drove away.He kept his eyes on the road and his attention to the instructions Harrison gave him.His employer appeared to be in a serious mood, reviewing documents and making calls.Adrian did not interrupt him.He knew Harrison had little patience for unnecessary conversation while working. The journey proceeded without incident. When they arrived at the office, Adrian parked the car and opened the rear door.Harrison stepped out and adjusted his jacket."Have the car cleaned this afternoon," he instructed. "I don't want it looking neglected.""Yes, sir.""And make sure it's ready by four. I may need to leave again.""I'll take care of it, sir."Harrison gave a brief nod and walke
NEW JOB
"Then don't let the work injure you. No amount of money is worth getting hurt.""I know. Thank you."Adrian adjusted his grip before lifting the next load.He wasn't interested in proving that he could lift more than everyone else. He simply wanted to complete the assigned work within the time available.By 11:30 a.m., he had finished clearing a substantial portion of the designated area. The foreman inspected his work and nodded."Not bad. Keep going, but don't rush so much that you make mistakes.""All right, sir."Adrian returned to work.He was tired, and his shirt clung to his back, but he continued at a steady pace.At 11:55 a.m., he took a short break to drink water. Then he checked his phone. There were no missed calls from Harrison. He breathed a sigh of relief. He still had time to complete the remaining section of his assignment. He return
NEW JOB
He had been considering returning for some timeNow, with three hours available, he saw an opportunity. He could earn extra money toward Vanessa's handbag without sacrificing his main salary. However, he knew the risk.Harrison had explicitly instructed him to remain available. If his employer called and discovered that he was somewhere else, Adrian could lose his job.And losing his job would leave him further away from the very thing he was trying to achieve.Adrian rubbed his palms against his trousers. He needed to calculate everything carefully. He couldn't simply leave and hope for the best.He had to make sure he could return before Harrison needed him. After a few minutes of consideration, he made his decision. He would go to the construction site, work for a limited period, and return well before the meeting ended. He would leave himself enough time for the j
NEW JOB
The following morning, Adrian woke up before his alarm rang. For a few seconds, he remained on his bed, staring at the ceiling. His body was still tired from the previous day's work, but he could not afford to spend another minute lying down. He turned toward the small table beside his bed and picked up his phone. There was no message from Vanessa. Adrian stared at their conversation briefly before locking the screen. He had hoped she would contact him during the night, but she hadn't. Nevertheless, he wasn't ready to give up on their relationship. He still loved her, and despite their recent disagreements, he wanted to make things right between them. His eyes moved toward the small notebook on his table. Inside it, he had written down his monthly expenses, the money he needed to send to his mother, a
THE PRICE OF LOYALTY
" Are you praising me or you are mocking me??"Adrian thought within because he did not know whether Harrison meant the statement as praise or a warning, so he simply nodded."I'll do my best, sir."Harrison returned to his documents."That's all for now. My assistant will contact you when the arrangements are finalised."Adrian thanked him and left the office. As he walked down the corridor, he felt a renewed sense of hope. The extra assignments could provide the additional income he needed. If he managed his money carefully, he might be able to save enough to buy Vanessa the handbag she wanted.Perhaps that would reassure her that he was not simply making empty promises. He knew an expensive bag could not fix every problem in their relationship, but it would be a start. At least, that was what he believed.---At approximately four o'clock, Adrian received a call from Harr
