Chapter Eighteen: The Book of Ages

The book was heavier than it looked.

Xavier carried it back to the capital in a leather satchel, never letting it out of his sight. He could feel its power pulsing through the fabric, ancient and patient and waiting. It was like carrying a sleeping beast, one that could wake at any moment.

"What is it?" Zara asked, walking beside him. "What does it say?"

Xavier shook his head. "I do not know yet. I have not opened it."

"Why not?"

He stopped walking and turned to face her. "Because I am afraid of what I might find. The darkness that consumed Caspian came from this book. Whatever is inside it, it is dangerous."

Zara studied him for a long moment. Then she nodded slowly. "Then we will face it together. Whatever is in that book, we will face it together."

Xavier felt a surge of gratitude. She had always been there for him, through the worst moments of his life. She had never given up on him.

"Thank you," he said. "For everything."

She smiled, a soft, warm smile. "You do not have to thank me. I would do it all again."

They returned to the capital and locked themselves in the council chamber. Xavier placed the book on the table, its black leather cover gleaming in the candlelight.

"Are you ready?" Sera asked.

Xavier took a deep breath. "No. But I am doing it anyway."

He opened the book.

The pages were filled with symbols, ancient and complex. They seemed to shift and move as he looked at them, forming patterns that his mind could barely comprehend. But beneath the symbols, there was something else. A story.

"This is the history of the Sovereigns," Xavier said, his voice filled with wonder. "The first dragon wrote it. It tells the story of how the Sovereigns were created, how they were hunted, and how they fell."

Sera leaned forward, her eyes wide. "Does it say how to defeat the darkness?"

Xavier turned the pages, his eyes scanning the text. "Yes. It says the darkness is a corruption, a shadow that was born from the first dragon's grief. It says the only way to defeat it is to bind it again."

"Bind it how?" Zara asked.

Xavier's face went pale. "It requires a sacrifice. The blood of a Sovereign."

The room fell silent. Everyone was looking at Xavier, their faces filled with shock and fear.

"No," Zara said, her voice shaking. "Absolutely not. We will find another way."

Xavier shook his head. "There is no other way. The book is clear. The darkness can only be bound by Sovereign blood."

"Then we will find another Sovereign," Sera said. "There must be others out there."

Xavier was silent for a long moment. He thought about the ancient dragons on the Isle of the Forgotten. He thought about the blood that flowed through his veins.

"I am the only one," he said. "The last of my kind."

The weight of the words settled on his shoulders. He was the only one who could stop the darkness. He was the only one who could save them all.

"We will find another way," Zara said, her voice fierce. "I will not let you sacrifice yourself."

Xavier reached out and took her hand. "You cannot stop me. This is what I was born to do. This is why the Storm Sovereign chose me."

Tears streamed down Zara's face. "I cannot lose you. Not again."

Xavier pulled her into his arms, holding her tight. "You will not lose me. I promise. I will find a way to survive."

The days that followed were filled with preparation. Xavier studied the book obsessively, learning everything he could about the darkness and how to bind it. He trained with his powers, pushing himself to his limits. He said goodbye to his friends, to the people he had come to love.

And then, it was time.

Xavier stood at the edge of the city, looking out at the mountains where the darkness had first appeared. The book was in his hands, the satchel slung over his shoulder. Zara was beside him, her face pale but determined.

"I am coming with you," she said. "Do not argue."

Xavier opened his mouth to argue, then closed it again. He knew better than to try to stop her.

They walked through the wilderness for three days, following the path that had led them to the fortress. The darkness was growing stronger, spreading across the land like a plague. They could feel it in the air, cold and oppressive.

On the fourth day, they reached the source.

The darkness had taken the form of a massive cloud, swirling and churning above the mountain. It was alive, pulsing with a malevolent energy.

"This is it," Xavier said. "This is where it all ends."

Zara grabbed his arm. "Xavier, wait. There has to be another way."

He turned to face her, his eyes soft. "There is no other way. This is what I was born to do."

He pressed the book into her hands. "Take this. Keep it safe. And remember me."

"Xavier, no." Zara's voice was breaking. "Please. Do not leave me."

Xavier kissed her forehead. "I will always be with you."

He turned and walked toward the darkness, his body crackling with storm energy. The cloud swirled above him, reaching out with tendrils of shadow. He raised his hands and began to speak, the ancient words flowing from his lips.

The darkness screamed.

It lashed out at him, trying to consume him, trying to drag him down into oblivion. But Xavier held firm. The storm energy surged through him, brighter and brighter, until he was nothing but light.

"Forever," he said. "I bind you forever."

The darkness recoiled, shrieking with fury. It writhed and twisted, trying to escape. But it could not. Xavier's power held it in place.

And then, it was gone.

The cloud dissipated, the shadows fading into nothing. The sky was clear, the sun shining. Xavier collapsed to his knees, his body broken, his power spent.

Zara ran to him, her face streaked with tears. "Xavier! Xavier, please be okay."

He opened his eyes, a weak smile on his lips. "I told you I would find a way to survive."

She laughed, a broken, joyful sound. "You are impossible."

They held each other, watching the sun rise over the mountains. The war was over. The darkness was gone. And they were alive.

The Exile Dragon King had saved them all.

And the world would never forget.
