CHAPTER 1
The gates of the Robinson estate opened as a black van slowly drove in. The guards and gardeners didn’t pay attention. The van stopped in front of the mansion and a man in a neat white uniform got out and opened the van door."We’re here, Mr. Woods," he said politely.Jason Woods gave a small nod. His face was blank and lacked expression. Slowly, he moved his fragile legs onto the footrests of his wheelchair. The man in uniform helped him out of the van and pushed him toward the house.Inside the mansion, he noticed that not much had changed in the three years he was away, but it didn’t feel welcoming. As Jason was wheeled into the living room, no one said hello, they all pretended to be busy with their individual tasks. His wife, Olivia, sat on the couch with her younger sister, Melissa. Her father, Peter Robinson, drank whiskey while reading a magazine. Olivia’s mother was busy on her phone. A cousin watched something with headphones on, completely lost in whatever was on the screen
CHAPTER 2
“Olivia,” Jason said softly. She didn’t even look up at him. She stared at the wine in her glass like it was more important than the man who had once risked his life to save her father. He tried again, his voice rising a bit this time, “Olivia, I asked you a question. Do you really want to divorce me?”She finally turned, arching an eyebrow like he had just asked her if the sky was blue. “Jason, I thought I already made myself clear. Yes, I do, isn’t it obvious? I’ve wanted that since the moment you came back with nothing but your pitiful chair and even more pitiful excuses.”Jason’s heart ached from her words and he shook his head.“But we’ve been married for four years. After everything…”“Exactly,” she cut in sharply, walking toward him with a look of disgust on her face. “Four years, Jason. Three of which were spent funding treatments for a man who came back exactly how he left, broken and useless.”He was used to her being this harsh on him, but it still hurt him every time.“On
CHAPTER 3
Jason walked out of the Robinson mansion and went straight to the driveway, looking directly at the people standing in front of him.Just as he expected, Michael Norman was there. He stood in the center, wearing a dark suit that was probably only affordable to two persons in the world. Seven men stood beside him, behind them were three large cars. All of them looked serious, as if they were waiting for someone very important.“There! He is here!” the man shouted with reverence, the moment he saw Jason Woods approaching. “The Divine Finger is here!”All heads turned instantly towards Jason.Jason’s jaw tightened immediately as he felt a little embarrassed by the attention. “Damn it,” he muttered under his breath.Michael, who had been looking at the ground until then, immediately lifted his head. Upon seeing Jason, his face lit up with awe. Without hesitation, he raised his hand and gave a sharp command.“On your knees!” he ordered. The seven men around him dropped to one knee at once
CHAPTER 4
Jason was about to take a drink when the sound of the mansion gates and an approaching car caught his attention. Peeking through the curtains, he saw Peter Robinson’s luxury car driving in.He quickly settled into his wheelchair, masking any sign of movement, just as Olivia, Peter, and Melissa entered the mansion. Jason forced a casual smile, pretending he had been calmly waiting for them all along.“Hey you guys are back,” he said.Olivia’s head snapped toward him, and her eyes rolled so hard.“Yes, obviously,” she drawled, her voice sounding flat. “I know you’re a pathetic cripple, Jason, but I didn’t realize blindness was part of the package too. Do you need me to describe what just happened? Or can you figure it out yourself?”Jason’s lips pressed into a thin line. For a brief second, he considered answering back, but instead, he chose silence. His eyes dropped to the floor, not because he was ashamed, but because he knew if he met her gaze right now, she’d see the anger he kept c
CHAPTER 5
Jason returned to the roadside where he left Lawrence behind. In his hand was a gold bar he had taken from Michael Norman’s pile of gold. He didn't take it for himself but with Lawrence in mind.Lawrence straightened nervously as Jason approached. Without a word, Jason held out the gold bar to him. “Take it,” Jason said, his voice sounded calm.Lawrence blinked, his brows drawing together in confusion. His eyes darted from Jason’s expression to the glittering piece of gold.He hesitated, as though his mind could not process what he was being offered. “M-Master Jason… what is this?” he asked, his voice trembling.Jason spoke calmly,“It is a bar of gold. Thirty-two ounces. Its value stands at one hundred thousand dollars.”“Take it. But remember this… everything you saw today, including this gift, not a word leaves your mouth. Not to anyone. Do you understand me, Lawrence?”The butler froze as the number sank into his mind. One hundred thousand dollars. His salary was barely two thousa
CHAPTER 6
Olivia’s voice turned icy again when she turned away from Samuel and faced Jason. She raised her voice so that not only Jason but every guest in the living room could hear her clearly. She began bitterly, “Are you happy now? Do you feel satisfied after ruining Samuel’s mood tonight? Look around you. We were having a wonderful evening, celebrating Samuel Tennyson’s achievement, and everyone was enjoying themselves.”“And then y-you… you had to roll in here, dragging your crippled body across the floor and pretending you have any right to call yourself my husband.”At that moment, laughter spread through the guests. A good percentage of them laughed, and the few others who didn't laugh were just too disappointed at Jason.Jason clenched his jaw, the muscles twitching as Olivia kept talking.“You have never been capable of anything, Jason. Not a single thing,” she said. “Tell me, can you even afford to buy a simple body lotion for the woman you claim is your wife? Can you even afford tha
CHAPTER 7
Olivia walked up close to Jason until she was standing right in front of him. She bent a little so that her face was level with his.Jason could almost feel her breath on his face as she spoke, her voice was cold and sharp.“Look at you,” she said slowly, “do you even realize how useless you are? If you were only poor, it would not have been so bad. People can be poor and still have something to offer. But you? You don’t even know one important person. Not a single person of value is connected to you. At least if you knew someone powerful, I could still hold my head up. But no. You are poor, crippled, and completely alone.”Her words echoed around the living room. Some of the guests shook their heads, others whispered to one another, but none of them defended Jason.Olivia straightened her back proudly and pointed at Samuel with her hand. “By tomorrow morning, Samuel has promised to take me with him. Do you hear me? He will take me to meet an extraordinary man, a man everyone in this
CHAPTER 8
The next morning, Jason sat quietly in his room, already knowing what was coming. Around nine, he heard a car horn outside and didn’t need to look. He knew it was Samuel Tennyson. From the window, he saw Samuel step out of his expensive car, dressed neatly and smiling like he owned everything.A few minutes later, Olivia came out. Her hair and dress showed she had taken her time to prepare. She walked straight to Samuel and gave him a bright smile, one Jason had never seen directed at him. Jason stayed calm on the outside, but inside he was burning. He watched silently as she got into Samuel’s car, laughed at something he said, and then they drove away.A few minutes later, Lawrence entered Jason’s room quietly. He bowed slightly. “Master Jason, the car is ready.”Jason nodded. “Let’s go.”Lawrence helped him out. Just as they stepped out of the Robinson compound, a black car waited outside. Michael Norman himself sat in the driver’s seat. When he saw Jason, he quickly stepped out, wa
CHAPTER 9
Jason sat there in his wheelchair, his hands resting calmly on the armrests, but his eyes—those piercing, steady eyes—remained locked on the president. For a moment, there was nothing but the sound of the steady beeping of the heart monitor beside the president’s daughter.Everyone was waiting for Jason to say something, but before he could even open his mouth, Alec, the president’s personal doctor, let out a sharp, mocking laugh.“Well, this is rich,” Alec sneered, his lips curling with delight at the opportunity to humiliate. He took a step forward, making sure all eyes were on him before gesturing toward Jason with a flourish, as though presenting him to an audience. “Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce this so-called savior. He is not a doctor, not even close. He is nothing more than a cripple sitting in a wheelchair. And you dare to bring him into this room? You dare to let him even look at the president’s daughter, much less touch her? If he so much as lays a finger on h
CHAPTER 10
Alec’s laughter echoed across the hallway. He jabbed a finger in Jason’s direction, his mocking voice dripping with scorn.“Do you all hear this? Do you hear the audacity of this cripple? He sits there, in that pathetic chair, acting like he has the power to heal anyone. Jason Woods… hah, I should have recognized you sooner. The dropout, the charity case, the boy who couldn’t even finish school because the orphanage abandoned him when their funds dried up. And now, after years of wallowing in misery, you show up here pretending to be someone important?”He leaned closer, sneering. “Tell me, Jason, do you even know the basics of medicine? Or do you just play doctor in your dreams?”Jason’s face remained calm. His eyes shifted to Alec. His voice, when it finally came was calm, as though Alec’s words hadn’t touched him at all.“You can say whatever you like about me, Alec. You can laugh at my past, mock the fact that I grew up without parents, or call me a cripple if that makes you feel
