"Oh shut up, please!" Olivia said dismissively without any hesitation, standing up and folding her arms to her chest. Jason looked shocked, his eyes moved to her, then to the others, who still hadn’t said a word in his defense. "Why have you chosen to be this useless?" she continued in a low growl. "You haven’t worked a single day since we got married. Maybe you just like sitting in that chair, being pitiful, and using it as your excuse for why you're a broke man." Jason’s teeth clenched. He wanted to defend himself, to explain again, but the moment he opened his mouth, Olivia raised a hand. "Don’t say a word, I’m not done. You think you can play the victim forever? My family paid for your therapy, flew you around the world, gave you access to the best doctors, and yet here you are, back with the same damaged spine and still sitting in that chair." She rubbed her forehead. Jason lowered his gaze, disappointed at her reaction but he didn’t talk.

CHAPTER 1

The gates of the Robinson estate opened as a black van slowly drove in. The guards and gardeners didn’t pay attention. The van stopped in front of the mansion and a man in a neat white uniform got out and opened the van door.

"We’re here, Mr. Woods," he said politely.

Jason Woods gave a small nod. His face was blank and lacked expression. Slowly, he moved his fragile legs onto the footrests of his wheelchair. The man in uniform helped him out of the van and pushed him toward the house.

Inside the mansion, he noticed that not much had changed in the three years he was away, but it didn’t feel welcoming.

As Jason was wheeled into the living room, no one said hello, they all pretended to be busy with their individual tasks.

His wife, Olivia, sat on the couch with her younger sister, Melissa. Her father, Peter Robinson, drank whiskey while reading a magazine. Olivia’s mother was busy on her phone. A cousin watched something with headphones on, completely lost in whatever was on the screen.

Jason looked around, confused and hurt. He cleared his throat, trying to summon a little courage to break the silence being maintained by the Robinsons.

"I'm home," he said, forcing a smile onto his face, hoping everybody would warm up and welcome him.

But the room remained dead silent. He had started to doubt whether they even heard his voice, and before he could speak again, he noticed something.

His wife, Olivia rolled her eyes, crossed her legs, and leaned back into the chair.

"So?" she said flatly. "You are home so what should we do about that? Were we supposed to stand up and clap for you? Throw a welcome home party for someone who went away and came back exactly the same?"

Jason's smile faded, after the sacrifice, his wife was still so cold. "Olivia... please. I know I’m still in the wheelchair, but I tried…"

"Tried?" she snapped coldly, cutting him off. "We spent five hundred thousand dollars each year for three years, making one and half million dollars for your treatments, Jason. And you still came back in that same damn wheelchair. You think that’s a victory?"

Jason’s voice was low as he spoke, but he still tried to make it stable. "The damage to my spine... it was more severe than they thought. I didn't choose to stay this way, I never wanted this."

Maybe you just like sitting in that chair, being pitiful, and using it as your excuse for why you're a broke man."

Jason’s teeth clenched.

He lifted his head slowly and said in a low voice, "Do you all really not remember? Why I ended up like this on this wheelchair?"

Olivia narrowed her eyes, dismissing him. "Don’t start that same old sad story again."

"I didn’t ask for this," Jason said. "Three years ago, I gave your father a kidney when his failed. The doctors messed up with the surgery, and that is why my spine got damaged. I suffered spinal cord ischemia during the surgery. Why are you all acting like you have forgotten?"

Jason had been a healthy young man from a poor neighborhood when Olivia’s grandfather took interest in him. The old man, Abraham Robinson, believed Jason was a special person, although he never really said why. When Peter Robinson fell ill and needed a kidney transplant, Olivia begged Jason to donate one to her father. The surgery was a success for Peter but a rare error during the procedure left Jason paralyzed from the waist down.

The Robinsons funded his treatment abroad, sending him to top-tier rehab facilities across two powerful countries. But despite three years of intense therapy and multiple procedures, the Robinsons received a report that Jason’s legs and spine were not responding to the treatments.

"I gave up my kidney for you," Jason said, turning his gaze to Peter. "Do you really not care what happened to me?"

Peter lowered his glass and scoffed. "Don’t act like you did me a favor, boy. You weren’t doing it out of love. You were doing it because my late father forced my daughter to marry you. That kidney was the least you could give to the Robinsons."

Olivia added, laughing bitterly, "And what a return investment, huh? A man from the slums, parading around in suits our money bought, living in a mansion he could never afford, still unable to stand up for himself… literally."

"Have some respect for your grandfather," Jason said, his voice firmer now. "He’s the only one who ever treated me like I mattered."

"My father was a fool," Peter said as his voice turned cold. "Calling someone from the gutter 'special' like he was some prophet, now he is dead and we are stuck with the charity case he left behind."

Melissa snorted. "Special? Please. I’ve seen dogs on the street with more spine than you."

Jason closed his eyes for a moment, letting the cruel laughter fade around him.

"The only reason you’re still here is because I legally can’t divorce you until the five years are up. Grandfather made me sign that stupid clause to get my shares in the family company. One more year, Jason… One more year, and I swear, I’ll be free of you forever."

Jason raised his head, shocked…
