Few brownish crumbs scattered over the dining table as little Avery took a bite from her toasted slice of bread. She chewed for a few seconds and swallowed it.

She was kneeling on the dining chair as she ate casually.

Peter was seated opposite her with a loose red tie and white collar. His shirt was also white so he ate slowly and with great care.

He and his daughter kept sharing glances as they ate their breakfast in silence. Peter would sometime make funny faces and noises and Avery would chuckle to mock her dad.

After a few minutes, Jocelyn walked out of the kitchen with an hair net covering her deep black hair. Her hands were clenched to the edges of a wooden tray with heaps of hot pancakes sitting on it.

Avery spotted her mum walking out of the kitchen and her face brightened, “Finally!”

She dropped the toasted slice of bread and jumped down, skipping towards her mum. She reached Jocelyn and threw her hands up towards the woo
