At half past five, Oscar walked into his apartment feeling drained, both physically and emotionally. He was overworked by the deliberate attempt from his ex-colleagues to frustrate him, and whatever they were doing, it worked. As soon as he walked into the house, he could think of nothing other than the flash drive that he had kept away. Now he was more determined than ever to learn more about it and to acquire whatever it had to offer.
But just before he could settle down, an unexpected knock came on the door. He wasn't expecting any visitors today, so he could only imagine what kind of trouble he's gotten himself into this time. And it couldn't be the landlord, that old man would never show up in the evening. He unlocked the door, and before him stood a figure dressed in a black leather jacket, dark shades and big boots. It was an odd wardrobe choice especially for the season. "Can I help you?" Oscar inquired, his brows raised with curiosity. "Are you Oscar?" The man asked, his voice deep and firm. "Is there a problem?: "Do you know him, yes or no?" The man asked again, his tone harsher this time. Quickly, Oscar scanned the arena, and no one else was in sight. "Well, at least no one is here to experience me get humiliated for something I don't even know about." He thought and turned back to the stranger "I am Oscar." Before he could finish speaking, the stranger punched him on the nose and brushed past him. He walked into Oscar's apartment without permission, all he needed was to confirm that it was the right house, which Oscar had confirmed. Oscar was perplexed and slightly terrified, a stranger breaking into his house wasn't how he expected his day to end. "What is going on?" He managed to ask, but the stranger did not respond; instead, his gaze on Oscar was so intimidating that the young man could crumble under it. Suddenly, three men all dressed alike in black leather jackets and dark shades walked into the apartment, and not a single one of them batted an eye at Oscar. He didn't know who they were or why they had come to his house, but he wasn't just going to let strangers barge in and do nothing about it. "What do you want?" He yelled, trying to get hold of the mopsticks nearby. However, before Oscar could reach for it, these men dashed at him, overpowered him and beat him to the ground. They were merciless, brutal and didn't care if he survived anyone of their blows and jabs. "You had better stay quiet," The man who had come in the first time warned, and the others stopped, leaving Oscar on the floor to do what they had come for. While lying there seemingly helpless, Oscar watched these men tear his apartment apart, they tossed the television across the room without a care, they pulled out the drawer and threw out all that was in it, they lifted the curtains and pulled out the bedsheets. Chairs were scattered and plates broken; it seemed as though they were searching for something while causing mass destruction to the rented apartment that he had yet to pay the rent for. "Did Mr Adkin send you too?" Oscar tried to yell, but ended up coughing blood to the ground. "Did he ask you to come and tear my house down? Hasn't he done enough to me already?" Oscar's voice became more audible as he tried to get back to his feet. "I did not do anything to him, to that family I've never done anything to deserve this!" He lamented and didn't stop even after the man had given him a deadly stare as a warning. "Do they hate me so much for marrying into their family? Why are they treating me like a dog, like I do not deserve to have a good life... why have they been so cruel to me, and even now that I have left them silently, they sent you to vandalise my house!" "Shut... up!" This order came with a blow that landed on Oscar's left eye. "You talk too much." With that, he turned to the others with a hand gesture only they could understand. And just as quickly as they came in, they walked out of the apartment, slamming the door behind them as they did. They didn't seem to find what they were looking for. Oscar's gaze shifted to the door and then across the room, which was now a mess. His body was bruised, and the internal pain was excruciating, but the thought of losing the flash drive crossed his mind, and suddenly, he was energised. He limped around, careful not to step on any of the broken bits lying around, searching for the flash drive. He didn't recall hiding it away, so if these strangers were after the flash drive, they must have taken it already, he thought. Fortunately, he peeped under the bed and somehow the flash drive was right in the middle. Quickly Oscar pushed the bed aside, picked up the flash drive and heaved a sigh of relief; if they had taken it away, it would have been more painful than the beating he had received. He wasn't going to waste any more time contemplating. He grabbed his laptop from the pile of mess, plugged the drive into the port and located the file. ______ ...CONFIDENTIAL DOCUMENT ... Evermore Conglomerate _____ After reading, Oscar's phone dinged with numerous notifications, forcing him to take it out of his pocket. The screen was cracked, but good enough to see all the emails he received from the Evermore Conglomerate. But that wasn't the most fascinating. Still staring at the phone, his account was credited with a sum of 100 Billion Dollars, an amount that Oscar never imagined he'd own in life. It felt like a dream, one that Oscar refused to believe. Deep down, something told him that it was true, the mysterious lady, the cars after her and her words to him. Oscar knew that his life was about to change forever, and still in shock he whispered, "All these while, I had 100 Billion Dollars... in ... my rented apartment." Oscar picked up a piece of cloth and wiped the blood trailing down his nostril, before searching the Internet for any information about the Evermore Conglomerate. He checked every known source and even the list of publicly registered companies for details, but got nothing. The Evermore Conglomerate doesn't even seem to exist according to the Internet, and he couldn't help but wonder why. Even secret organisations had their names and profiles online, yet their activities remain hidden from the public eye. But Evermore Conglomerate was just different. "What on earth?" He muttered, overwhelmed by a sense of unease. He picked up his phone once more and glanced at all the emails. He refreshed the page numerous times, yet nothing changed. He just wanted to confirm that it was all real and he wasn't hallucinating, he wanted to be wealthy but didn't want his mind to play tricks on him. Oscar read through the emails, and every single one of them ended with a warning, asking him to keep a low profile. Even the mysterious lady had told him to do the same. "It's a secret society," he thought, his heart racing with anticipation of what he had gotten himself into. The email was full of promises, a luxurious life beyond what he had ever imagined, promising him security and wealth, but it demanded that he remain hidden. It also instructed him to read the document on the flash drive carefully and provided him with certain numbers to call if he needed any help. Overall, Oscar learned that he is going to be in control of a secret, Trillion-dollar establishment from his rented apartment. Truly, it was a lot to take in. Oscar was excited but afraid; he didn't want people to come after his life because of a company that he knew nothing about. However, he appreciates this unexpected blessing for a reason, because now he can make all those who had made his life a living hell pay. He had sworn that if he ever amassed wealth far greater than his ex-wife's family, he would make them suffer, all of them, including his wife. He swore to find out why he got fired from his workplace and crush all those involved, even his boss would not be safe from his wrath. And then there was the landlord, Oscar wasn't sure what to do with him yet. That old man had upset him too many times and deserved a payback, which he would receive. Slam! Oscar snapped the laptop shut and pulled out the flash drive. He looked around the apartment for a good hiding spot but the house was still a mess. With a sigh, he kept the laptop and flash drive aside and stood up. Wincing in pain, he walked to the bathroom, washed the bloodstains off his hand and face. His left eye was a bit swollen, alongside numerous scratches. He still didn't know who those men were, but his biggest guess was that his father-in-law sent them or that they were the same men chasing the mysterious lady from yesterday. After cleaning up, Oscar returned to the room and started to rearrange everything that was scattered. He threw out those that were broken and kept a few that could be repaired. In the process, he stumbled upon the divorce papers that he had kept away earlier. And quickly, he left everything to look for a pen. As soon as he found one, Oscar signed every line that required his signature, he didn't bother reading the terms and conditions. After all, Mr Adkin already told him that the child will be in the custody of his ex-wife's new fiancé. Whoever he is, they believe he's the father of the child, so Oscar has nothing to fight, at least not now. __________ Meanwhile, at Adkin's family mansion... "What do you mean you searched the house and you saw nothing?" Mr Adkin barked, staring disdainfully at the man in front of him. Pam was seated across the living room next to her mother, Phil was present, as well as Mr Adkin's eldest daughter, Pearl. They had been engaged in a little family discussion when a man dressed in a black leather jacket walked into the living room. He took off his dark shade when he approached them, showing off his handsome face. "I am saying the truth, sir," he replied. His name is Carl, and he had been instructed to take a few of his men to search Oscar's house without a clue of what they were to look for. "We didn't know what to look out for. Everything there seemed to belong to him, most of them are old and rusty and dead. Nothing to indicate that Lady Natasha left him with anything." "That cannot be true!" Mr Adkin snapped, his voice echoing off the living room wall. "The surveillance camera in the street saw her approaching Oscar, she told him something, and she must have given him something as well before running off." "Oscar doesn't even know who Lady Natashe is," Pam chimed in, "If he knew, that scumbag would have begged her for a job that would change his life, or for money." "The footage shows that she was in such a hurry," Carl noted, "She may not have left anything with him." "And you know the Evermore Conglomerate dear," Mrs Adkin added. "We only know them because our company is under their supervision, not just us but millions of companies. Yet we don't know anything about them, we don't know who heads the organisation, or who is in charge. At least we know that Lady Natasha is a very important person there but we don't know anything else." She paused, and Phil picked up from where she left off, "There's nothing about them on the internet, it's like they don't even exist, yet we know they do because they control almost every, great company on this planet." "And that is why I am concerned, Philip!" Mr Adkin said, his gaze shifted to that of his son, "Why would a woman as important as Lady Natasha speak to Oscar, that loser isn't worth a second of her precious time. What did she say to him and what did she give him?" "Dad, you are overthinking now," Pam assured him. "I have an idea, sir." Said Carl, and all eyes turned to him with curiosity written all over them. "Yes?" He cleared his throat, "If Lady Natasha had given Oscar anything, we can be sure that he'd become rich in no time, he'd probably buy a new house and move out of his rented apartment, buy a new car and would probably change his entire wardrobe." "Get to the point." Snapped Mr Adkin. "What I'm saying is," he continued, "Oscar becoming rich overnight is a sign that Lady Natasha has given him something. So I can assign men to keep an eye on him and we will report to you if we see any signs like that." "You don't have to," Mr Adkin muttered, a mischievous smile spreading across his lips. He closed the distance between himself and Carl, and looking him straight in the eyes, he ordered. "If you see any signs that Oscar Wellington is no longer the loser he used to be... Kill him on the spot and return to me with a clear image of his dead body, got it?" Carl simply nodded, "Yes sir."Latest Chapter
Chapter 40 - Meeting the CEO 2
Oscar stood frozen for a fraction of a second, his eyes glued to Kevin’s face as though the man had just spoken something otherworldly. Of all the people he expected to encounter today, Pam was the absolute last, and she hadn’t even crossed his mind until now.“My wife?” he asked, as though his ears were playing tricks on him. “Why does she want to see… oh.” Realization dawned on him, and the confusion vanished, replaced instantly by a sinister smile. “What do you think, Kevin? Should I go and say hi?”Kevin smiled. “I think you should, sir.”Back in the lobby, the receptionist got a call from Kevin. Their conversation lasted only a few seconds before she turned back to Pam and Oliver, who had not left the front of her desk the entire time.“The acting CEO will be with you shortly.”Oliver’s eyes widened. He glanced at Pam, disbelief written all over his face. “Does he know you?”“We have never met,” she replied. “But it is a good thing he’s coming, because I am not leaving until he
Chapter 39 - Meeting the CEO 1
A dark grey car pulled into the parking lot, sliding into one of the vacant spaces. Inside, Pam sat fuming, her anger just as fierce as it had been when they left the station. Oliver had tried everything to calm her, reassuring her, even promising to handle the situation himself. But Pam wasn’t interested in peace. Not today. The moment the engine went quiet, she pushed the door open and stepped out, slamming it hard enough to make Oliver flinch. She didn’t wait for him. She didn’t even look back. She stormed straight toward the entrance. The building looked different from the last time she’d visited with her father. Subtle changes…but enough to unsettle her. Even the large signpost that once read Evermore Quarters was gone.“Pam!” Oliver called from behind her. She turned to glare at him, held his gaze for a second, then looked away sharply and kept going. She slipped through the revolving doors before he could catch up.Pam marched to the receptionist’s desk. Without greeting or he
Chapter 38 - Revolving door
The Evermore Conglomerate.“Where are we?” Oscar inquired, his gaze fixed on John. He watched them drive into a vast complex, about the size of the largest amusement park in Southend. There wasn’t a single poster indicating their entry point, and he instinctively assumed it was a secret base for the Evermore. From behind, Kevin responded, “This is the Evermore Conglomerate Quarters, the only one in Southend… part of the company is under renovation, which is why you didn't see the signpost at the front. We paused after the death of the CEO but will resume soon.”Oscar nodded, his eyes returning to his side of the window. He marvelled at every feature he observed. The fields were well-mown, the flowers neatly trimmed, and the fountain at the centre of the parking lot sparkled under the sunlight. He shifted his gaze to the grand entrance after the car took a turn. It was a revolving door, and he saw a few people walking out, conversing with files in their han
Chapter 37 - Getting worse
Back at the station, the Adkins did everything they could to get their father released, but the cops wouldn’t listen. They would not let Mr. Adkins go until the evidence against him was disproved. While sitting in the lobby with no idea what to do next, Pam felt someone familiar take a seat beside her, his cologne unmistakable. She turned.“Oliver… you came?”“To see what I can do,” he replied quietly. “We also have a lot on our hands right now. My father must not even know I’m here. I’m supposed to be on my way to the Evermore Quarters in Southend.”Pam’s eyes widened. “Is everything okay?”“They want to cut us off too.”“No way!” Pam gasped, covering her mouth. “It’s like the Evermore Conglomerate is doing a massive clearance on all the companies they support. But why would they do that?”Oliver shrugged. He didn’t have an answer, though he had his suspicions.“The new CEO might be behind it—deliberately targeting companies that generate the least revenue and cutting them off. But o
Chapter 36 - Down the basement 2
As they descended the stairs, Oscar could barely recognise the man in the basement; his face was bruised, but it didn't entirely disfigure him. Carl looked up, surprised to see more than one person in the room, and most shockingly, a familiar face. As soon as his eyes met Oscar’s, he looked away. “This is him,” Oscar whispered to John. “Well, you have seen the man. I had to tie him up like this because— “He is dangerous, I know,” Oscar cut her off, finishing her sentence. He drew closer to Carl, his hand going under the man’s chin as he lifted his face so their eyes met again. “You were keeping an eye on me, weren't you? Who asked you to do that? “You know him?” Sarah asked, but John hushed her. “They are having a heart-to-heart,” he mused. “I don’t know what you are talking about,” Carl tried to deny it, but Oscar didn’t give him a chance. “I know that you know me
Chapter 35 - Down the basement
Oscar concluded his tale with a smile, his eyes fixed on John, whose jaw had dropped to the floor long ago. It was easy for him to conclude that Oscar had allowed them to trample on him all this time, but he also couldn’t overlook the genuine love he had for Pam and how much the betrayal had changed him. It also helped him understand why Oscar had willingly taken on this role and had requested that the Adkins be cut off from the company. “I am sorry this happened to you, sir. Whatever you do to them now is justified.” “Exactly,” Oscar remarked. “That is why I am coming with you. If Adkin truly had something to do with the escaped prisoners, then I must know, and I’ll pile it up against him. He must feel the weight of my revenge, not just him, but all of the Adkins must feel it.” Not long after this conversation, Oscar, John, and Kevin headed to Sarah’s apartment, and they were lucky to find that she was still at home.
