The headline "Evermore Conglomerate's New CEO" spread like wildfire among everyone's business enterprises, organisations, and companies owned and managed by the Evermore Conglomerate. The email was sent as soon as the position was claimed, and it sent shock waves through the spines of everyone who read it.

After the death of its founder, Mr Berlin Evermore, curiosity spread across the globe with everyone wondering who the next CEO might be. Mr Evermore had only daughters, lost his wife in a plane crash and thus did not have an heir to the multi-trillion-dollar establishment he had established.

His immediate family were not people he trusted; his younger brother was a criminal, and his daughter... well, it is said that she isn't capable of running an entire family business even with the backing of the father's supporters. To him, she just wasn't strong enough.

Despite the shocking news, one thing remained a mystery: the identity of the new CEO. In the emails sent out to partners and c

Oscar stood frozen for a fraction of a second, his eyes glued to Kevin’s face as though the man had just spoken something otherworldly. Of all the people he expected to encounter today, Pam was the absolute last, and she hadn’t even crossed his mind until now.“My wife?” he asked, as though his ears were playing tricks on him. “Why does she want to see… oh.” Realization dawned on him, and the confusion vanished, replaced instantly by a sinister smile. “What do you think, Kevin? Should I go and say hi?”Kevin smiled. “I think you should, sir.”Back in the lobby, the receptionist got a call from Kevin. Their conversation lasted only a few seconds before she turned back to Pam and Oliver, who had not left the front of her desk the entire time.“The acting CEO will be with you shortly.”Oliver’s eyes widened. He glanced at Pam, disbelief written all over his face. “Does he know you?”“We have never met,” she replied. “But it is a good thing he’s coming, because I am not leaving until he

A dark grey car pulled into the parking lot, sliding into one of the vacant spaces. Inside, Pam sat fuming, her anger just as fierce as it had been when they left the station. Oliver had tried everything to calm her, reassuring her, even promising to handle the situation himself. But Pam wasn’t interested in peace. Not today. The moment the engine went quiet, she pushed the door open and stepped out, slamming it hard enough to make Oliver flinch. She didn’t wait for him. She didn’t even look back. She stormed straight toward the entrance. The building looked different from the last time she’d visited with her father. Subtle changes…but enough to unsettle her. Even the large signpost that once read Evermore Quarters was gone.“Pam!” Oliver called from behind her. She turned to glare at him, held his gaze for a second, then looked away sharply and kept going. She slipped through the revolving doors before he could catch up.Pam marched to the receptionist’s desk. Without greeting or he

  • Chapter 38 - Revolving door

The Evermore Conglomerate.“Where are we?” Oscar inquired, his gaze fixed on John. He watched them drive into a vast complex, about the size of the largest amusement park in Southend. There wasn’t a single poster indicating their entry point, and he instinctively assumed it was a secret base for the Evermore. From behind, Kevin responded, “This is the Evermore Conglomerate Quarters, the only one in Southend… part of the company is under renovation, which is why you didn't see the signpost at the front. We paused after the death of the CEO but will resume soon.”Oscar nodded, his eyes returning to his side of the window. He marvelled at every feature he observed. The fields were well-mown, the flowers neatly trimmed, and the fountain at the centre of the parking lot sparkled under the sunlight. He shifted his gaze to the grand entrance after the car took a turn. It was a revolving door, and he saw a few people walking out, conversing with files in their han

  • Chapter 37 - Getting worse

Back at the station, the Adkins did everything they could to get their father released, but the cops wouldn’t listen. They would not let Mr. Adkins go until the evidence against him was disproved. While sitting in the lobby with no idea what to do next, Pam felt someone familiar take a seat beside her, his cologne unmistakable. She turned.“Oliver… you came?”“To see what I can do,” he replied quietly. “We also have a lot on our hands right now. My father must not even know I’m here. I’m supposed to be on my way to the Evermore Quarters in Southend.”Pam’s eyes widened. “Is everything okay?”“They want to cut us off too.”“No way!” Pam gasped, covering her mouth. “It’s like the Evermore Conglomerate is doing a massive clearance on all the companies they support. But why would they do that?”Oliver shrugged. He didn’t have an answer, though he had his suspicions.“The new CEO might be behind it—deliberately targeting companies that generate the least revenue and cutting them off. But o

  • Chapter 36 - Down the basement 2

As they descended the stairs, Oscar could barely recognise the man in the basement; his face was bruised, but it didn't entirely disfigure him. Carl looked up, surprised to see more than one person in the room, and most shockingly, a familiar face. As soon as his eyes met Oscar’s, he looked away. “This is him,” Oscar whispered to John. “Well, you have seen the man. I had to tie him up like this because— “He is dangerous, I know,” Oscar cut her off, finishing her sentence. He drew closer to Carl, his hand going under the man’s chin as he lifted his face so their eyes met again. “You were keeping an eye on me, weren't you? Who asked you to do that? “You know him?” Sarah asked, but John hushed her. “They are having a heart-to-heart,” he mused. “I don’t know what you are talking about,” Carl tried to deny it, but Oscar didn’t give him a chance. “I know that you know me

  • Chapter 35 - Down the basement

Oscar concluded his tale with a smile, his eyes fixed on John, whose jaw had dropped to the floor long ago. It was easy for him to conclude that Oscar had allowed them to trample on him all this time, but he also couldn’t overlook the genuine love he had for Pam and how much the betrayal had changed him. It also helped him understand why Oscar had willingly taken on this role and had requested that the Adkins be cut off from the company. “I am sorry this happened to you, sir. Whatever you do to them now is justified.” “Exactly,” Oscar remarked. “That is why I am coming with you. If Adkin truly had something to do with the escaped prisoners, then I must know, and I’ll pile it up against him. He must feel the weight of my revenge, not just him, but all of the Adkins must feel it.” Not long after this conversation, Oscar, John, and Kevin headed to Sarah’s apartment, and they were lucky to find that she was still at home.
