Kang Tae-jun spent six years being treated like a nobody by the wealthy family he married into. Then his wife divorced him in front of a photographer and left him with nothing but forty-seven dollars and a shattered pride. What she didn't know was that Tae-jun was the only heir to Kangseong Holdings, a hidden billionaire empire his father had kept secret from him for thirty years. Now the man they humiliated controls the company powerful enough to crush everything they built. But Tae-jun's inheritance comes with a deadly secret: his father wasn't killed by accident. His murder was connected to a hidden council controlling Hanseong from the shadows—and Tae-jun may have inherited more than an empire. With enemies closing in, a mysterious female auditor carrying secrets of her own, and his ex-wife's powerful new fiancé standing between him and the truth, Tae-jun begins a war that will shake the entire city. They thought they had thrown away a worthless husband. They were wrong. They created the man who would take everything from them.

CHAPTER 1: MY MARRIAGE...GONE!

The photographer was what broke me.

Not the divorce papers. Not Seo-yeon standing across from my desk with her wedding ring shifted to her index finger like a piece of jewelry that no longer carried a promise. Not even her mother, Han Mi-sook, sitting beside her with the composure of a woman attending a corporate execution she had scheduled months in advance.

It was the camera.

A sleek, matte-black thing dangling from a stranger’s neck.

Everything else could be rationalized as the ordinary decay of two people whose marriage had died long before either possessed the courage to sign the papers. The legal forms could be signed. The hollow condolences swallowed. The humiliation buried behind closed doors.

But a photograph was permanent.

A photograph meant someone had decided this exact second—the precise moment my life was reduced to rubble—deserved to exist long after today.

I stared at the young man near the glass wall of my corner office. Dressed in a dark suit, he didn't hide what he was doing. He had positioned himself where the overcast afternoon light fell directly across my desk, waiting for my breakdown.

I dragged my eyes away.

Across the desk, Han Seo-yeon folded her hands over her handbag. "We've discussed this enough, Tae-jun."

Her voice was soft, devoid of venom. That made it worse. Six years of marriage, and she still knew how to make absolute abandonment sound like mercy.

I stared down at the agreement lying between us.

Kang Tae-jun.

Six years. I remembered the small apartment we rented when we first married, the cheap curtains she hated, and the secondhand table I built because we couldn't afford a carpenter. I remembered holding her when she cried, terrified she would never attain the life she desired, and promising I would build it for her.

I had built it. I spent six years pulling all-nighters at Daehan Development, producing architectural blueprints her family routinely stole to sign their own names to. I built her world. I just hadn't realized I was building one where I was disposable.

Her mother cleared her throat. "Tae-jun, don't make this more difficult. Sign so we can finalize the filings today."

I met Han Mi-sook's eyes. She had disliked me from the second Seo-yeon brought me home. To her, I was a husband with no prestigious bloodline, no fortune, and no connections—a temporary mistake her daughter had finally gathered the sense to correct.

Beside her, Seo-yeon's brother, Han Do-jin, leaned casually against the doorframe, a smirk tugging at his mouth. "I told you he'd sit there like a stunned dog. Six years, and he still thinks playing the noble husband is enough to keep a seat at this table."

A cold coil tightened in my chest, but I ignored him.

I picked up the fountain pen. My fingers trembled—just a fraction, but enough to betray the storm inside me. Seo-yeon noticed, her eyes softening for a fleeting second before the corporate mask clicked back into place.

"I'm sorry, Tae-jun," she whispered.

"Are you?"

She didn't answer.

Mi-sook sighed. "This is precisely why we settled this privately."

"Privately?" I glanced toward the window, where the camera lens was pointed straight at my face.

Do-jin laughed. The photographer adjusted his focus ring, capturing the exact distance between my hands and the paper.

I understood then. This was a staged execution, documented so thoroughly that I could never return to claim a single shard of what I had helped build.

Seo-yeon tapped the paper. "I left the property distribution untouched, Tae-jun. The small apartment, the car... you can keep it all."

"How generous."

"I'm trying to make this transition easier."

"For me?" I met her eyes. "Or to clean your conscience before you walk into Ahn Tae-hyun's house?"

Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

I set the pen against the signature line. Tae-jun, the man who raised me used to say, when winning is impossible, dignity isn't about fighting back. It's about refusing to beg.

I signed my name in dark, steady script.

Seo-yeon immediately pulled the papers to her chest.

Click.

The shutter sound echoed like a gunshot. I looked directly into the lens.

Click.

"Who hired you?" I asked.

The room fell silent. The photographer glanced at Mi-sook. She didn't move, but her silence was a confession.

I stood up, opened my desk drawer, and pulled out a cardboard box with my few personal items: my father's watch, two framed photos, and a cheap pen Seo-yeon gave me on our first anniversary.

Turning to my monitor, I closed the master rendering for the sixty-story Cassian Tower project—a design I spent eighteen months creating. I cleared the server cache.

"Keep the tower design," I said smoothly. "Give it to Tae-hyun. He's going to need it."

Seo-yeon blinked. "Tae-jun—"

I walked toward the door. Do-jin stepped aside, his smirk returning. "Don't take it personally, Tae-jun."

I stopped beside him. "I don't."

The elevator ride down was long and silent. By the time I hit the lobby, my phone was vibrating with messages. The news was already breaking. I pulled the phone out, switched it off, and dropped it into a trash bin.

Outside, torrential rain poured over Seoul. I stepped into the storm, watching the city blur behind sheets of falling water.

Six years. Erased.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my wallet. Forty-seven dollars. My apartment lease was ending, my job severed, my marriage dead.

I should have felt destroyed, but I only felt an absolute emptiness, as if the part of me that knew how to hope had been surgically removed.

A black sedan glided to a halt beside the curb. The rear window rolled down, revealing an elderly man with silver hair and an impeccable suit. He studied me for three long seconds.

"Kang Tae-jun," he said.

"Who are you?"

He stepped out into the rain. "My name is Choi Dong-wook. I have been searching for you for eleven months, Young Master."

"You've got the wrong man."

"I do not make mistakes." He reached into his coat and handed me a worn photograph.

A tall man stood outside a hospital wing, looking down at a newborn. I recognized him instantly from financial magazines and corporate archives: Kang Min-jae, the founder of Kangseong Holdings who had died eleven months ago.

"Why are you showing me this?"

"Because that man was your biological father," Dong-wook said quietly. "And according to his sealed mandate... Kang Tae-jun, you are the sole heir to Kangseong Holdings. Everything he built belongs to you."

My fingers crumpled the paper.

Dong-wook leaned in, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "And you need to listen closely... because your father's death was not natural."
