Chapter 61: Silent City
The hour after the central array died was not a time for celebration. It was a time for the people to catch their breath. The big room in the capital terminal was huge. It was like a world inside. When the loud humming noise from the logic cube stopped the room was quiet. You could hear every footstep on the floor. You could hear every cough from the people from Sector Ten. You could even hear the creaks of the big Turbine-One as it cooled down.Karl was still leaning against the steel plow of the locomotive. The white frost on the front of the machine was melting. It was dripping down the iron plates. Making small puddles on the floor. The air still smelled like the vapor from the machine.. Beneath that smell Karl could smell the familiar scent of wet soot cooling oil and hot iron. It made him feel like he was really there. We need to make sure the area around us is safe Karl said. His voice was quiet. It carried across the big room. It felt strange to talk without the digital networ
Chapter 60: Open Terminal
The train went down into the northern capital basin slowly. It was like gliding through a city made of glass. The Turbine-One was not making its loud noise. It was just a soft hiss now. The train was moving down a slope with a lot of weight behind it. The big steel shaft inside the train was spinning around freely. Its many spring-steel blades were turning slowly in the air. The wheels under the train were moving because of gravity and the trains own momentum.Karl was standing with his hands on the iron edge of the control panel. He was used to feeling a lot of vibration. Now it was gone. Instead he heard a humming noise coming from the steel rails below. It was an predictable sound that felt kind of peaceful. The cold morning wind was blowing into the train bringing a smell with it. The air tasted a bit like ozone and nitrogen. The city below did not look like a place where people lived. As the train went through the mountain foothills Karl saw a city with many silver towers. Each t
Chapter 59: Silent Torrent
The floor of the foundry in Sector Thirteen was like a kettle about to boil over. For three days the big furnaces had been burning high-grade coal and old train parts turning them into a liquid metal that smelled like burned clay and rocks. The air was thick and hot like a soup. It made the wooden beams above the casting pits creak and groan in the dark.Karl stood on the platform his shirt off and his skin was sweaty and covered in fine black dust. His hands were raw. Blistered from working on the dreadnought and they were wrapped in thick cloth as he held a long iron rod. Below him a big ceramic pot hung from a chain and its bottom was glowing with a purple light that made the workers look away.Steady on the winch Brendan yelled from the bottom of the pit. His voice was rough from breathing in furnace smoke. He stood at the edge of the mold his leather apron all. Curled and his hands held a long iron bar. We only get one chance to make the casing, guys. If the metal splits before i
Chapter 58: Avalanche of Steel
The walls of the gorge rose up like huge black jaws swallowing the armored track-clearer whole. Inside the command cab the noise of the big engine was everywhere a physical pressure that vibrated through the steel deck and made Karls legs and eyes ache. The machine was running on a mix of chemical waste and every part of the engine was protesting loudly.Karl held onto the iron throttle with his left hand his knuckles white, his palm slippery with grease and sweat. The machine had no steering wheel, iron rails to guide it but the throttle controlled the power going to the big electric motors. Every time the engine had an explosion the generator would shudder and the whole machine would lurch forward violently. The temperature is getting too high Clara called out her voice strained. She was checking the engine with her test leads and her hair was down, wet and dark across her face. The third and fifth cylinders are too hot. If it gets any worse the metal will. The pistons will seize.W
Chapter 57: Iron Road
The march north started in silence like a heavy weight pressing down on the earth. For forty years the southern coastal basin had been filled with the noise of machines but now it was dead. The destruction of the Sector Eleven parasite had not destroyed the rogue logic rack but also the thick fog that had covered the area. As Karl led the group of three hundred survivors away from the crater and onto the train tracks the sky was changing. The thick yellow clouds that had covered the basin for long were tearing apart and clean winds from the north were rushing in. Sunlight hit the grey salt flats making the dead landscape look harsh and clear. The rusty pipelines, trees and cracked concrete were bathed in golden light making the survivors shield their eyes. Many of them had never seen the sun before. They walked with their heads down their filter-cloths around their necks stepping carefully over the wooden sleepers.Karl walked at the front his boots making a rhythm on the granite ball
Chapter 56: Sonic Breach
The vibration inside the cab of the Sovereign II was not a vibration it was a strong and constant pounding that went through the soles of Karls boots and deep into his chest. The world outside the windows was a dark and blurry mess, like a big smear of grey and blue. The mountains were behind them now. They were on a big flat area of land. The wind was not just blowing it was hitting the front of the train with a lot of force making a noise around the cab and tearing the smoke into long thin streams that disappeared into the dark.Karl had his hand tightly on the handle of the main steam control feeling every little change in the resistance. The engine was moving in a way that was scary and smooth not like the movements of the automated trains he used to work on. The Sovereign II was like a living thing, with its big boiler making noises and its wheels pounding the tracks like a heart beating fast.Karl called out to Clara "What is the pressure status?" He did not turn his head keepin
