“Why would the zombies be waiting for this person?”

Taking a sideways glance at the man as they continued running, Duncan wondered what was so special about this man that made him different from the others.

Following that train of thought, Duncan also looked at the zombies still chasing behind them and thought to himself, “Maybe that is not the answer I should be asking.”

“Maybe the answer is: what makes these people who were brought into this ghost realm different from me?”

“If I ask this question, then the answer is actually simple... I’m an intruder.”

“If I look at this from a different perspective and treat the ghost realm as an event center where a party is being hosted, then those people that went missing are invited guests, while I am simply a party crasher.”

“Since the beginning, it wasn’t the ghost realm that dragged me here—I simply stumbled in here by myself; so, if I remove myself from the equation, things become much simpler.”

Once Duncan’s mind came up with this hypothesis, he didn’t let go and continued to speculate based on the idea that he was a stowaway on this train.

Next, all he had to do was assume that he had entered this place in the normal manner, and maybe he could figure out what he was missing.

“If I had entered here normally, the first-case scenario is that I could’ve either ended up like the first body I dug up from the grave—trapped inside the earth with nowhere to go and driven mad by fear and anxiety until I died in despair, at which point my body would be possessed by ghosts and I turned into a zombie.”

“Or, I could’ve appeared on the surface like this person, probably surrounded by zombies and likely captured.”

Duncan felt that this hypothesis was likely to be very accurate.

There was no need to doubt the first-case scenario since he had witnessed it firsthand.

As for the second, he simply guessed it based on what the other man had told him, with one little difference from his account: which is that instead of being eaten, Duncan would be captured by the zombies.

Contrary to popular belief, zombies did not subsist by consuming flesh... they were not living creatures in need of sustenance.

What they needed was life force, not as food, but rather as a catalyst for creating more ghostly energy.

When a zombie attacks a living creature, they become infected by their zombie energy—an energy extremely similar to ghostly energy—and much like in the same way a person who is possessed by a ghost experiences it, their life force is corroded by the energy and they become weakened and eventually die, at which point the zombie energy transforms the victim into a new zombie.

In cases like this, when one person is bitten, if they are not treated in time, just that one person alone is enough to trigger a catastrophic zombie outbreak that is enough to sweep through an entire country in hours if measures are not taken on time to prevent it.

That is why Duncan was terrified when he had seen so many zombies gathered outside the one exit that could lead to the outside world.

With the sheer number of zombies gathered in this realm, should they enter into the main world, only God knows the magnitude of untold horrors they would unleash onto the world.

Only, now Duncan was beginning to suspect why none of the zombies had gone out when they were all gathered there in such great numbers.

After accumulating for so long, surely their numbers were enough already to bring devastation to the entire world, so why didn’t they?

Why were none of them stepping through the exit... unless they can’t!

As soon as Duncan thought about this, there was a subtle flash of inspiration that swept through his mind—a guess that could potentially explain why the zombies hadn’t, or couldn’t, invade the main world.

But he couldn’t prove this without endangering himself, which was something he wouldn’t do.

Fortunately, there was another person whom Duncan was willing to use to verify his guess, who was running right beside him.

So, without hesitation, Duncan finally turned to the other man and spoke to him.

“Hey, you.”

Huh!

Hearing Duncan suddenly speak, the man, who had been trying his best to keep up with him, became startled and almost stumbled to the ground.

Catching himself in time and managing to regain his balance and continue running, the other man finally responded, “Are you talking to me?”

Duncan said, “Yes, I am talking to you. So tell me, what is your name?”

“Grant,” the man answered, a bit of dissatisfaction in his voice.

“My name is Grant.”

“Okay Grant, listen to me very carefully,” Duncan began.

“You see those creatures that are chasing us? Those are zombies. Although they are not commonly seen, you have to believe when I say this: zombies exist, and not just them but also ghosts, and we are currently in a world filled with these ghosts and zombies.”

“Are you following me so far?”

Grant nodded his head, showing that he understood. He didn’t show much doubt about what Duncan said, looking as if the idea that ghosts and zombies existed in this world was not so hard to believe at all.

And indeed, it wasn’t.

The world Duncan and Grant lived in, while looking ordinary, was closely intertwined with the supernatural; and while it wasn’t common to encounter them on a regular basis, normal people weren’t completely ignorant of their existence.

Common superstitions like ghosts and curses were popular in this world, and mystics, fortune tellers, and exorcists claiming to have supernatural powers were a dime a dozen in the main world.

Although most common people had seen no proof of the existence of the supernatural, many simply chose to believe, as it was better to do so and be cautious in everyday life than to not and live completely in ignorance.

As such, when people heard an ordinary street had people disappearing and was cursed without any evidence proving the claim, many decided to simply avoid the street altogether rather than risk being affected by whatever curse was plaguing it.

“What’s all this racket about?” Duncan uttered after regaining control of his body. While not fully recovered, Duncan was well enough now that his mind wasn’t feeling hazy, and the fire on his body no longer burned as fiercely. With that no longer being a concern, Duncan started observing his surroundings.Meanwhile, after seeing Duncan rise from the ground, Grant immediately mocked him in a sarcastic and derisive tone.“And the great detective lives. What a wonderful surprise. You were sleeping so soundly and for so long, I thought you’d already joined the dead and would wake up as a zombie—good thing that didn’t happen, or I don’t know what I would’ve done without you.”“But imagine my surprise when I saw you sleeping here surrounded by so many zombies after abandoning me back there… again! I thought that with such a marvelously concocted plan you’d have left this place already, but instead, you decided to fall asleep in the midst of all these walking corpses.”“So then, tell me, De

“Hey, wake up.” A distant voice called out to him.Ugh!“My head!”Duncan could not focus at all. His mind was scattered by a splitting headache that assaulted him like a large foghorn blowing loudly in his cranium, making him unable to concentrate on anything.“Hey, is he gonna be okay? He hasn’t moved in a long while… maybe he’s dead.”“He’s not dead, although I would wish for nothing more.”There it was again—those voices. It seemed like two people talking to each other, but their words were sometimes hazy and incomprehensible, leaving Duncan lost in a murky state of confusion.“Who are they talking about?” Duncan wondered as he tried to gather his thoughts, but the headache was preventing him from doing so.The voices continued to speak to one another.“Huh, you wish he was dead? Why? Wouldn’t it be better if he lived so we can all come up with a way to get out of here?” the first voice asked in confusion, to which the second voice replied blandly and without emotion.“I hate to b

“No, no—please let me go. Don’t do anything to me. I don’t know anything, I swear I don’t know anything at all. I was doing what I was told. It was just a dare, you see—someone dared me to go into that street and said they’d pay me if I did, that’s all it was. I swear I didn’t mean to intrude at all. If I’d known this is what would happen, I wouldn’t have accepted that stupid dare at all. But I promise I won’t tell anybody about this if you all just let me go, so please let me off just this once… I’m begging you, please!”“Do any of you hear that ticking sound?”“Hmmm!”“Who’s making all that racket? It doesn’t sound like Grant at all.”Duncan, who was buried in the ground, slowly dug himself out with practiced ease, taking his time while doing it so as not to make too much of a commotion.Since he didn’t know where he was buried and what the situation was like outside, in order to avoid digging himself out only to end up being surrounded by zombies, Duncan took his time while digging

  • Duncan’s Curse

Going back a little to understand what was happening...It all starts with Duncan’s escape plan, but ignoring everything else, we must focus on the core of it all on which Duncan’s escape completely hinges upon... which were his boots. As already stated, Duncan’s boots were a pair of cursed supernatural objects that possessed special powers that are unimaginable to ordinary people. This power is the power to move through and between any region of space freely and without restraint. The emphasis here is on the lack of restraint! These boots were so powerful that it didn’t matter what barrier or restriction was in place; it could traverse itself along with its wearer into any location it desired. If so, why is such a powerful object considered cursed by Duncan? The answer is simple really... because they were impossible to control.A curse, in the simplest meaning of the term, is anything that carries the effect of misfortune.Be it an item, a relationship, or even an encounter—as long

  • Flourish Or Fall

Duncan witnessed the fall of Grant as he got piled upon by several zombies until he was completely covered up from sight. After a quick look to make sure he wasn’t being feasted upon like a rare delicacy, without a ripple in his heart, Duncan swiftly continued running ahead, unconcerned with Grant’s fate.“This confirms it,” Duncan mused.“The zombies aren’t out for blood; instead, they’re looking to capture us alive and probably take us back to the exit.”“Why... well, that’s what I have to figure out next.”Although Duncan had already confirmed his earlier speculation, it didn’t mean that he was going to surrender himself to be taken to the zombies to be taken away to the exit by them.Without knowing for what reason the zombies needed living people, it was still risky to approach without a plan.So what was Duncan going to do next?“Although surrendering and letting the zombies take me is the easiest way to get to the exit, the risk is too high, so I’d better stick to the original
