Cynthia stood silently by the bedside with her gaze on Matilda before she finally turned her head towards Florence, her friend.

“Florence, I want the attending physician assigned to this case to be replaced.”

Florence blinked. “You mean Dennis?”

Cynthia nodded. “Yes. Effective immediately.”

There was no heat in her tone, but the frost in her eyes was unmistakable.

“I no longer trust his competence, or his moral judgment. He was more interested in insulting Antonio and protecting his own pride than actually helping my sister. If Antonio hadn’t stepped in…” Her voice tightened. “My sister would be dead.”

Florence’s eyes flicked to Matilda, then back to Cynthia.

For a second, she hesitated, processing the gravity of what Cynthia was saying. Her friend had never spoken like this before—not to her or anyone. Cynthia was furious, though calm and controlled.

“I’ve already submitted a formal complaint,” Cynthia continued.

Cynthia’s hands trembled as she stood beside Antonio, her heart pounding violently in her chest. The revelation that Matilda’s case was critical, and that saving her would require more than ordinary effort, left her paralyzed with fear. Her legs felt as though they might give way beneath her weight. “Antonio… does this mean… does this mean my mother will… give up the ghost?” she whispered, her voice choked with despair. “The source of her recovery… if she’s so sick… how can she possibly survive?”Antonio’s eyes softened as he looked at her, the calm authority he always carried grounding her. “Cynthia,” he said gently, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder, “do not let your fear dictate the outcome.Your mother is far stronger than you think, and there are ways to guide her through this. We will do what is necessary, and everything will be fine. Trust me.”Cynthia swallowed hard, trying to breathe evenly, though the lump in her throat made it nearly impossible. She glanced at

Cynthia’s hands trembled as she walked through the cold, antiseptic-scented corridor toward the ward where Mathilda lay. Each step echoed faintly against the tiled floor, a sharp reminder of the sterile environment that surrounded her. Her thoughts were tangled, bouncing between relief and fear. Just moments ago, she had believed that Antonio had been able to stabilize Mathilda’s condition — that his presence and his expertise would ensure the girl’s health to hold. And yet, Matilda's image left her heart pounding like a drum in her chest with each beat resonating with dread. The fluorescent lights overhead cast a harsh glare on the walls, their stark brightness amplifying the tension that seemed to cling to the air. Cynthia swallowed hard, forcing herself to take steadying breaths, though they came ragged and uneven. Her mind refused to settle, cycling through the events of the past hours: the sudden deterioration, the frantic calls to the hospital, and Antonio’s calm assurance

The moment Antonio spoke the name Mathilda, Cynthia’s eyes widened, her gaze locking on his face as if searching for even the slightest flicker of doubt. But there was none. His tone was steady, his posture unwavering, and beneath the surface, a faint tremor of conviction pulsed through his words — all of it telling her that he wasn’t guessing. Antonio never spoke without reason, and Cynthia knew it.She had seen him in situations that would have caused ordinary men to falter — in moments of danger, in the presence of loss, in the thick of mysteries far beyond comprehension — and yet, through every trial, he carried a certainty that was impossible to ignore. That certainty disarmed even the strongest skepticism. So this time, she didn’t question him. She couldn’t.“I believe you,” she said softly, her voice trembling but sincere. “Antonio, if you say Mathilda knows what’s happening, then please—let’s go to her. Mom doesn’t have much time. The doctors said two days. If we don’t do s

“…You should leave before you embarrass yourself any further.”Cynthia flinched at her father’s tone, the sharpness of his words slicing through the heavy air. Her heart ached as she looked from him to Antonio, caught between loyalty and desperation. She took a hesitant step forward, her voice trembling though she tried to sound composed.“Dad, please!” she pleaded softly. “Antonio is only trying to help. At least give him a chance. Mom—”“Enough!” Elias snapped, his voice booming across the room like thunder. His anger turned sharply toward her, eyes blazing. “You don’t understand anything, Cynthia. This is my wife. My family. I’ll not let some stranger with no medical degree touch her.”The words landed like blows. The relatives in the room exchanged uneasy glances, none daring to intervene. The air felt thick, suffocating.Antonio’s lips pressed into a thin line. He could feel the tension coiling around the room like a tightening rope ready to snap. Every muscle in his body urged h

Antonio’s expression darkened. The faint gray light slipping through the curtains made the sweat on Marianne’s brow glisten like a bad omen.He grabbed a folded towel from a nearby chair and eased it beneath Marianne’s head, cushioning it gently so her violent thrashing wouldn’t bruise her skull.Turning, he barked with the kind of directness that brooked no delay. “Cynthia—bring me a basin. Cold water. Now!”Cynthia didn’t hesitate. She darted from the room with her shoulders heaving. She ignored Elias’s glare; all the heat in the house had been sucked out and replaced by a single cold, steady urgency.Elias stormed forward with his fists clenched so tight the knuckles showed white beneath the skin. “What are you doing, boy?” he demanded. “Do you think you’re helping? Are you trying to kill her faster?”Antonio met him without flinching. His voice was calm, controlled, but the edge beneath it was unmistakable. “No, sir. I’m trying to keep her alive. Unless you’d prefer to stand h

Elias’s sharp laugh cut him off. “Medicine?” he repeated, his voice thick with disbelief. His gray brows furrowed, and the faint tremor in his jaw betrayed the fury he was holding back. “Are you a doctor now?” His eyes glinted coldly under the dim lamp. “Did anyone here ask for your help?”The words stung like a slap, but Antonio didn’t flinch. He straightened his shoulders, forcing his voice to remain calm, though his pulse hammered in his throat. “No one asked,” he admitted quietly, “but standing here doing nothing won’t change anything. Look at her—your wife is suffering. If we don’t act now—”“Act?” Elias hissed, stepping closer, the floorboards creaking beneath his boots. “You talk as if you understand what’s happening here. You think you can just walk into my home, look at my wife, and fix her like some broken machine?”The venom in his tone filled the room like smoke.Cynthia flinched at her father’s harshness, the tears clinging to her lashes catching the flicker of the
