“Now, where is everything?” Lucas asked Nicole with a straight face and eager demeanor.

Nicole paused for a second, still trying to weigh her unforeseen options before she sucked up her failure and revealed to Lucas where she had hid all that she had on Emilia and her son. She retreated into herself and spoke without looking him in the eye, feeling defeated.

“They’re at a storage unit downtown. Smith’s Locks. I have them saved in locker 223 in the fourth wing. The password is 070399.” Nicole told him.

Lucas winced at the password she gave him for the lock. It was her birthday. The day that they always celebrated together when they were still dating. He frowned and shook the thoughts out of his head. He had gotten the location of what he wanted. He didn’t really care about the thoughts of his past. Nor her.

Lucas turned away without any more hesitation and walked towards the door, wanting to go to the location she had given him before the time ran out for the day. He couldn’t risk g

“I'm sorry, James, but this is too much to take in and decide immediately," Lucas said, his voice laced with uncertainty."I need time to think," He added.James nodded understandingly, though a hint of urgency crept into his tone."Of course, Mr. Graham, but please don't take too long. Your father's company is hanging by a thread; without a capable leader in the seat, its future is precarious."Lucas winced at the name James called him, but regardless, he nodded, the weight of sudden and unwanted responsibility settling heavy on his shoulders. He stood up from his chair, shook James’ hand and then departed the office, his mind reeling with the enormity of the decision. As he headed straight for the Graham's mansion, he hoped the stares and whispers that had followed him since Emilia and Tobias's arrest would have died down. The gossip mongers had had a field day since the arrest and revelation, and Lucas longed for a respite from their prying eyes. But as he approached the mansion,

Lucas stood before the entrance, took a deep breath, and stepped inside. As Lucas entered the law firm, he was surprised by the ordinary atmosphere that greeted him. He had expected whispers, stares, and judgmental glances, but instead, everyone seemed oblivious to his presence. The receptionist smiled warmly, directing him to the elevator."Mr. Graham, please go up to the third floor. Mr. James's office is the last door on the right.”Lucas nodded, still wary, but the normalcy of the situation began to ease his tension. Not that it was normal given his circumstances, but it was far better than being pointed at and murmured at.He stepped into the elevator, the doors closing with a soft whoosh before his ascend began. Finally, on the third floor, he walked down the corridor, the plush carpet muffling his footsteps. The door to Mr. James' office was open, and Lucas entered, his eyes adjusting to the warm, wood-paneled space.James Madison, an elderly man with silver hair and wire-rimme

"And then she killed my mother under Emilia Graham's order," Lucas repeated, his voice cracking beneath the weight of his emotions, the pain and anguish etched on his face.Axel nodded solemnly, the realization dawning on him that the wife and son Nicole had spoken about in her video were actually Lucas and his mother. He felt a surge of sympathy and compassion for Lucas, his heart going out to the young man who had endured unimaginable loss.Instinctively, Axel placed his palm on Lucas' knee, offering a gesture of support and solidarity."So what are you going to do next?" Axel asked, his voice soft and gentle. He didn’t want to pry any further as he could see that Lucas didn’t want to dwell on the past.Lucas' gaze drifted off, his eyes clouding over."Well, I'm going to bury my mother. She's still in the morgue," he replied, his tone meek and exhausted. The weight of his grief hung in the air like a palpable mist. Axel's grip on Lucas' knee tightened.“After that?” Axel prodded onc

  • Chapter 46: The Secret is Out

Lucas stepped out of the courtroom, feeling an overwhelming sense of relief and vindication wash over him, as the weight of the grueling legal battles finally lifted off his shoulders. The tense conversation with Emilia and Tobias had been a necessary closure, but he'd emerged unwavering, his resolve strengthened by the knowledge that justice had been served. Relief and a deep-seated satisfaction spread through him as he reflected on the outcome of the court cases, every single one of which he had won. Emilia and Tobias would spend a lot of years behind bars even though it wasn’t their whole lives, but he would be ready for them when they got out. He would put an end to their misery at once after they had suffered in prison. He would deliver the final blow, a fitting punishment for their heinous crimes and the unbearable pain they had inflicted upon him.Lucas' thoughts turned bitter as memories of the past resurfaced, reminding him of the countless times Emilia and Tobias had callou

"Objection, Your Honor! This testimony is rank hearsay and cannot be admitted as evidence in this court. The prosecution is attempting to build a case on baseless rumors and secondhand accounts."The judge's expression turned thoughtful."Sustained. The court agrees with the defense. The testimony regarding Maria Rodriguez's statement is hearsay and lacks direct evidentiary value."Ms. Patel's face remained composed. She didn’t even need to prove it. She just needed the jury to hear that piece of evidence, but she couldn’t let the judge know that."Your Honor, I understand the ruling, but I believe the statement's relevance and probative value outweigh any potential concerns."The judge shook his head."I've made my ruling, prosecutor. Move on to other evidence."Lucas felt a surge of anxiety. Had Patel’s questioning been enough to seal Emilia's fate? Or would the lack of direct evidence allow her to slip through the cracks? She already had Emilia dead to rights, but her son was a dif

The third day of the trial dawned, casting a somber mood over the city and a joyous mood in someone’s room. Lucas rose early, his routine unchanging, and donned his tailored black suit. The weight of the murder case lingered, his mind still grappling with the intricacies of the evidence. He was happy that they had found Tobias and Emilia guilty in the earlier cases but there was still one last lap to go before he could go through with the last thing he had on his mind. Like the first day of the court case, Lucas went straight to the police station to see Axel. As he entered Axel's office, the familiar scent of old books and freshly brewed coffee enveloped him. Axel, already seated behind his desk, looked up, his eyes locked onto Lucas'."Ready for the last lap?" Axel asked, his voice low and even.Lucas nodded, his expression resolute, but he had one question to ask. Despite him finding the body, he wasn’t involved in the investigation of the homicide, so he had no idea what to expec
