“If you get into that car, Ethan… there’s no guarantee you’ll come back alive”

Rain hammered the abandoned shipping yard, the storm had intensified since they escaped the collapsing underground facility. Wind whipped across the harbor, rattling loose metal containers and sending sheets of water across the cracked concrete.

The black SUV sat silently beneath the storm, its dark exterior reflected flashes of lightning from the sky above, the engine idled softly, waiting, watching, like a predator.

Beside it stood the young boy holding an umbrella. He remained completely motionless, not nervous, not afraid, not even curious, just waiting.

Something about him felt wrong, not dangerous in the usual way, but controlled, too controlled, the kind of discipline Ethan had only seen in elite operatives.

Ethan pressed a hand against his wounded shoulder, pain shot through his body instantly, blood continued seeping through his fingers despite his efforts to slow it.

The wound was getting worse, Lena noticed, her hand remained close to the knife hidden beneath her jacket.

“Who sent you?” she asked coldly.

The boy ignored her entirely, his attention never left Ethan.

“My mother says you're running out of time”

His voice was calm, far too calm for someone his age. Ethan forced himself upright. Every movement felt like fire.

“Who's your mother?”

The boy tilted his head slightly, a strange gesture, almost mechanical.

“She knew your father”

Lightning flashed across the harbor. For a brief second the entire shipping yard illuminated. Rows of abandoned containers stretched into darkness. Broken cranes towered over the water like giant skeletons.

Ethan studied the boy carefully, something wasn't adding up. Children weren't supposed to look this composed, this calculated.

“How old are you?” Ethan asked.

“Twelve”

Lena immediately stepped closer to Ethan, protective, suspicious.

“We're not getting into that vehicle”

For the first time, the boy looked at her, recognition flashed across his face, a very brief reaction, then something darker replaced it, something that instantly changed the atmosphere.

“You're the Ghost Widow”

Silence, the rain suddenly seemed louder. Lena's entire expression hardened. Ethan looked between them.

“The what?”

The boy answered before Lena could.

“That's what Blackout Protocol called her”

Ethan frowned, the words carried weight, history, something ugly, something dangerous. Slowly, Ethan turned toward Lena.

“You had a codename?”

Lena avoided eye contact.

“It doesn't matter”

The boy smiled faintly, a smile without warmth.

“It mattered to the families”

The words struck like a knife, before Ethan could react, Lena moved, fast, terrifyingly fast. She grabbed the boy by the collar and lifted him slightly.

“Who are you?” she demanded.

Rain dripped from her hair, her eyes burned with anger. The boy didn't flinch, didn't struggle, didn't panic, nothing.

“My name is Noah”

“That's not what I asked”

Noah remained calm, almost unnaturally calm.

“My mother predicted you'd react violently when I mentioned the Widow name”

Lena immediately released him, as if she'd touched something dangerous. Ethan noticed it instantly, fear, real fear.

Noah adjusted his collar carefully.

“She also said Ethan wouldn't know the truth about you yet”

“Enough” Lena snapped.

But the damage was done, Ethan was already looking at her differently, questions filled his mind.

“How many people did you kill for Blackout Protocol?”

Lena didn't answer, she didn't need to, the silence answered for her.

Rainwater washed blood from Ethan's injured shoulder, his thoughts became darker, more complicated.

Who exactly had saved him? A survivor? A former assassin? A weapon pretending to be an ally?

Noah opened the SUV door wider.

“If you stay here arguing” he said quietly,

“Crowe's recovery teams will find you within minutes”

Ethan narrowed his eyes.

“Recovery teams?”

“They survived the explosion”

Lena cursed softly.

“How do you know that?”

Noah looked at her blankly.

“Because we intercepted their communications”

“We?”

Noah pointed toward the SUV.

“My mother is waiting”

Ethan closed his eyes briefly, everything was becoming impossible to follow. His father was supposedly dead, or maybe alive, or maybe dead again. Lena helped hunt him.

Crowe wanted him captured alive. Blackout Protocol was larger than he imagined, and now strangers seemed to know every detail, too many secrets, too many lies.

A distant helicopter suddenly appeared beyond the harbor, the sound echoed through the storm.

Lena immediately grabbed Ethan's arm.

“We need to move now”

Searchlights swept across nearby warehouses. Bright white beams cut through the rain. They were searching, getting closer. Ethan made his decision.

“Get in the car”

Lena stared at him.

“You trust them?”

“No”

“Then why... ”

“Because they know things we don't”

Another helicopter appeared overhead, then another. Time had run out. Lena reluctantly climbed into the SUV beside Ethan, Noah entered last.

The door closed quietly behind them, immediately the vehicle began moving. The interior felt strangely silent, dark leather seats, tinted windows, advanced digital displays, no visible driver.

Ethan frowned.

“Where's the driver?”

Noah answered without hesitation.

“There isn't one”

Ethan looked forward, the steering wheel turned by itself. The SUV accelerated smoothly through the rain-soaked streets. No human hands touched the controls, autonomous. Lena looked disturbed too.

“This technology isn't public”

Noah folded his hands neatly.

“A lot of things aren't public”

The city lights blurred past outside. Ethan leaned back, his vision occasionally blurred from blood loss, exhaustion was catching up,

Then he noticed something, a mark on Noah's wrist, a black symbol, small, precise, unmistakable.

Ethan grabbed the boy's arm instantly.

“Where did you get this?”

Noah looked down calmly. The tattoo showed a serpent circling a broken crown. The same symbol from Blackwater Bridge, the same symbol worn by the soldiers, the same symbol connected to everything.

“I was born with it”

Lena's face immediately turned pale.

“No...”

Ethan looked between them.

“What does it mean?”

For the first time, Noah looked uncertain. For a brief moment he actually seemed twelve years old, not a messenger, not a strategist, just a child.

“It means I belong to them”

The answer settled heavily inside the vehicle. Ethan released his arm slowly.

The SUV suddenly descended into an underground parking structure hidden beneath an abandoned hotel.

Massive steel doors opened automatically, then closed behind them, sealing the entrance. The vehicle stopped, Ethan stepped out carefully, his shoulder screamed in protest.

Immediately he noticed the guards, dozens of them, positioned throughout the garage, watching, prepared. Not ordinary security, professionals, military posture, military discipline, professional killers.

But unlike Crowe's forces, these soldiers wore white uniforms, and every uniform carried the serpent insignia.

Noah stepped out first.

“They've been waiting for you”

Lena quietly reached for her knife, Ethan noticed.

“You know these people?”

His voice dropped almost to a whisper.

“I thought they were extinct”

The statement confused Ethan even more. Before he could ask, footsteps echoed through the garage, slow, measured, confident.

Every guard immediately straightened. The atmosphere changed. Someone important was approaching.

A woman emerged from the shadows, tall, elegant, dangerous, gray streaks crossed her dark hair. Her posture radiated authority. Sharp eyes studied Ethan carefully, evaluating him, measuring him, judging him.

Then Ethan saw her face, and everything stopped, his heartbeat, his breathing, his thoughts. The world itself seemed to freeze.

Because he knew that face, not from photographs, not from intelligence files, but from childhood, from memories.

The woman smiled faintly.

“Hello, Ethan”

His blood turned cold, impossible, absolutely impossible. He remembered standing beside a coffin, remembered crying, remembered his father holding him during the funeral, remembered believing she was gone forever.

Yet the woman standing before him was unmistakable, every feature, every detail, every memory.

His mother, the woman buried years ago. The woman he had mourned his entire life. The woman who was supposed to be dead.

And now she's standing right in front of him.
