The bootheel pressed down hard against Kael’s throat, grinding his face into the freezing mud and crushed bone.

"Thought you could slip away with the supply logs, did you, dog?" Lord Julian’s voice dripped with arrogant amusement above the howling wind.

Kael tried to gasp for air, but his chest felt like it had been caved in by a war hammer. Warm, sticky blood poured from his nose, mixing with the filth of the trench. Around him, the bodies of his entire infantry squad lay motionless in the mud—men he had shared rations with just hours ago, now treated like garbage by the very commanders they bled for. Julian’s heavy silk boots stepped back, leaving Kael to choke on his own blood in the dark.

"Toss him in with the rest," Julian commanded lazily, waving a gloved hand as he turned away. "The empire doesn't pay for failures."

Two heavy pairs of hands grabbed Kael by his tattered armor. With a rough swing, they hurled his half-dead body over the edge of the pit. He plummeted through the freezing air before slamming hard into a mountain of decaying corpses at the bottom of the mass grave.

Pain exploded through his ribs, blinding and absolute. The darkness rushed in, thick and suffocating, whispering that it was finally over.

*Traitor.*

The word echoed in the back of Kael’s fading mind, turning cold grief into a white-hot spark of pure, unadulterated hatred. He didn't want to die here in the dirt. He didn't want Julian to win.

*Thump.*

His dying heart skipped a beat, then hammered violently against his ribs. A strange, freezing current surged through his veins, sweeping away the numbness and replacing it with a burning, ravenous hunger.

A sharp, glowing blue screen suddenly flashed across his dark vision, hanging right in front of his face.

[Welcome, Kael.]

Kael gasped, his eyes snapping wide open in the pitch-black trench. The world looked different now—sharper, bathed in glowing crimson thermal outlines. He shoved a heavy, lifeless corpse off his chest and dragged himself up onto his knees, coughing up dark blood that steamed in the freezing air.

His hands looked different. The fingernails had lengthened into razor-sharp black talons, glowing with a faint, lethal light.

Kael stared at the glowing blue text floating in mid-air, a dry, raspy laugh escaping his torn throat. A system? He had heard rumors of high-tier commanders awakening tactical interfaces during the front-line campaigns, but this was entirely his own. This was a weapon born from betrayal.

Above the trench, the crunch of heavy boots on frozen gravel cut through the whistling wind.

"Check the perimeter again," a rough voice barked. "Julian wants to make sure none of those rats crawled out of the pit before we burn it."

Two imperial scavengers stepped to the edge of the mass grave, holding torches that cast flickering, yellow light down into the pit of bodies. The tall scavenger was Level 4, clad in standard leather armor with a short sword strapped to his hip. The shorter one was Level 3, carrying a heavy iron pitchfork.

Kael sank low into the shadows of the corpse pile, his heart pounding a steady, furious rhythm. He was weak, half-starved, and bleeding out. If they spotted him now, he would be hacked to pieces before his new bloodline could even save him.

"I'm telling you, nobody survives a fall down this deep," the short scavenger muttered, spitting into the dirt. "Let's grab the officer's ring from the sergeant over there and get back to the fire. It's freezing out here."

"Fine. Make it quick," the Level 4 guard replied, turning his back to walk toward the other side of the trench.

Kael’s instincts took over. The burning thirst in his throat screamed louder than his broken bones. His awakened agility stat surged through his limbs, overriding the agony in his chest.

He didn't hesitate.

Kael exploded upward from the pile of bodies like a striking viper, closing the distance to the short scavenger in a fraction of a second. Before the man could even turn around, Kael drove his hand forward, his razor-sharp talons slicing cleanly through the guard's throat.

*Spurt.*

The guard dropped his pitchfork, grabbing at his bleeding neck with wide, terrified eyes before collapsing hard into the mud.

The scent of hot, fresh blood hit Kael’s senses, transforming his human reason into pure, predatory instinct. He dropped to his knees beside the dying man, pressing his mouth against the gaping wound without a single shred of hesitation or remorse.

The blood flooded his mouth like liquid fire, rich, powerful, and bursting with raw life energy. As he drank, the hollow ache in his chest vanished instantly. His torn flesh knit itself back together under his skin, and a fierce, intoxicating rush of power surged through every muscle in his body.

A rapid sequence of bright blue chimes rang inside his head.

Kael wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, standing up slowly as a deep, vibrating hum pulsed beneath his skin. He felt stronger, faster, and infinitely more dangerous than he had ever felt in his entire life.

The tall scavenger spun around at the sound of the thud, his torch illuminating the grim scene. When he saw his partner lying lifeless in the mud and Kael standing over him with glowing crimson eyes, the color drained entirely from his face.

"Y-You..." the Level 4 guard stammered, frantically reaching for the sword at his hip with shaking hands. "You're supposed to be dead!"

Kael cracked his neck, a dark, razor-sharp smirk touching the corners of his mouth as he stared down the man who thought he was weak.

The two massive private enforcers didn't hesitate; they drew their heavy iron-reinforced clubs and lunged forward with murderous intent, eager to please their master and terrify the gathering crowd of onlookers.Immediate trouble crashed down like a falling boulder. The first enforcer swung his club in a vicious, bone-crushing arc aimed straight at Kael's head. The crowd gasped collectively, many commoners turning their heads away to avoid watching the brutal impact.Kael didn't flinch, nor did he blink. With razor-sharp reflexes fueled by his upgraded agility parameter, he stepped smoothly inside the swing, letting the heavy weapon pass harmlessly by his shoulder. Before the enforcer could pull his weapon back, Kael channeled a fraction of his raw physical strength and delivered a lightning-fast palm strike directly i

He didn't flinch, nor did he turn around in a panic. He simply let the hostile words hang in the air, recognizing the arrogant, shrill tone immediately. Standing just a few paces away near the grand stone steps of the central exchange bureau was High Clerk Valen, a heavily pampered official draped in rich velvet robes embroidered with thick, glittering silver coin threads. Valen was flanked by two massive private guild enforcers, pointing a trembling, accusatory finger straight at Kael with a look of absolute, smug disgust.Word of the previous night's vault raid beh

"If those magitech runes trip, we'll have half the guild's elite strike team on our necks before we can even blink."Vesperia Vance's warning hissed through the damp midnight air as she pressed her back hard against the rotting timber siding of the east bazaar warehouse. Cold rain slicked the cobblestones, turning the narrow alleys into dark, reflective trenches.Kael crouched beside her, his fingers resting steady and cold against the reinforced iron-and-oak frame of the minor merchant store's back door. He didn't answer her nervous whisper with words; his mind was entirely locked onto the pulsing, invisible hum of arcane energy vibrating through the wood. The immediate trouble was right here—a high-tier security lock designed by guild artificers to vaporize unauthorized intruders.According to the plan they mapped out after leaving the Blue Lantern tavern, this black-market drop point held the illegal financial ledgers, rare catalyst stones, and high-value blood vials managed by the

"You're either the bravest fool in Valoria or the most dangerous man I've ever met."Vesperia Vance’s voice snapped through the tense quiet of the Blue Lantern tavern as she sat back down on the wooden bench, her gray eyes narrowing as she watched two unconscious Syndicate thugs being dragged away into the shadows by trembling patrons.Kael slipped into the seat opposite her without making a sound, pulling his hood down further to keep his face half-hidden. The immediate trouble had passed, but the lingering threat of the local enforcer network hung heavy in the smoke-filled air. If the Syndicate's main branch found out who had dismantled their men in broad daylight, every cutthroat in the lower district would be hunting them by morning."Bravery has nothing to do with it," Kael replied, his voice a low, steady hum that cut straight through the ambient noise of the room. "I didn't come to the capital to hide in taverns. I came to tear down the people who sign your execution orders."V

She stood abruptly in her dim corner booth, her hand resting heavily on the table while two bulky Syndicate thugs blocked her path with menacing grins.Kael, standing just a few yards away near the scarred wooden bar, didn't flinch. He had tracked the enforcers' movements straight from the alley information he gathered, slipping into the tavern mere moments ago. Hearing Vesperia's voice—and more importantly, her surname—sent a cold spark of recognition through his chest. Vance. • Chapter 7: The Alleyway Ambush

The heavy rain pattered relentlessly against the slick cobblestones of the dead-end alley, washing away the grey grime that caked the damp brick walls. In the dim shadows cast by a broken street lamp, the larger thug lowered his heavy iron cudgel, his initial confidence faltering under the cold, piercing weight of Kael’s gaze."You've got a lot of nerve, playing hero in the Syndicate's back yard," the thug sneered, trying to mask his rising unease behind a tough exterior. He motioned to his companion, a wiry man holding a rusted dagger. "Slice him up, Vane. Teach this wanderer how things work in the lower wards."The wiry thug didn't hesitate. He lunged forward with surprising speed, thrusting the jagged blade straight toward Kael’s chest in a swift, horizontal arc.Kael stood completely still until the steel was inches away. To his enhanced perception, the knife moved like a slow-motion pendulum through the damp air. With a subtle twist of his torso, Kael leaned just an inch to the s
