With the email and their cybersecurity knowledge, the tracking was made easy. The three men tracked Caiden to Springville Estate. Nevan was notified.
“How come? Didn't they say he's just there for commercials?” He asked in shock. “King’s block? The block belonging to……” He turned to Mr. Logan with furrowed eyes. Mr. Logan threw his face off. He had been warned not to reveal anything.
These men were not the kind of men who made mistakes in their tracking. They were the best of the best. Sharp suits. Earpieces. The quiet confidence of people who knew what they’re capable of.
The receptionist at the front desk didn’t let them get in but called Caiden to inform some men were here for him.
“Give them the phone.” He had said to the receptionist. While one of them got the phone, he checked the one and realized it had a golden verified sign by the side. Different from the number he always used at the hospital.
They were stunned. “Who really is he?” He asked inside of him. Only the top richest men in the world had gold verified. Even celebrities have blue verifications.
But he humbly relayed the situation at hand to him. Nevan even called one of them and Caiden listened to the voices in the hospital. It was true Maelie was in a critical condition.
He directed them to come to his apartment. They turned the corner and stopped. Caiden was standing in the midst of the hallway, surrounded by people.
Not just a few. There were easily fifteen men in expensive suits standing around him, heads slightly bowed, speaking in low respectful tones. Two of them held open folders. Another held a phone out to him with both hands. He was shown great respect. A fourth was on the floor adjusting Caiden’s cufflink that had come loose, all relaying that this Caiden is a great man.
On the other side of the corridor, three elites, shareholders of the Estate, invited to the Springville auction were waiting. They had arrived together.
Caiden stood like a great man in the midst of them all. He spoke in low tones to the man in front of him, signed something handed to him on a clipboard, then turned without hurry.
Michael whispered to him, Caiden listened, nodding his head.
Nevan’s men stood at the edge of the corridor and stared. One of them pulled out his phone and typed quickly. Sent a message back to Nevan.
“We've found him. This man seems to hold some big status we do not know about. People are attending to him. Or is it just an act?”
Nevan read it. Read it again. Set the phone face-down on the waiting room table. He didn't reply. Before Caiden arrived at the Springville Estate, he must be something but the other proud side of him won't admit.
“Ignore whatever act he's putting up and bring him here.” He said quickly.
“Okay,” the lead man said and they walked up to him.
“Dr. Howard.”
Caiden looked up.
“We were sent by Mr. Nevan Matthews. Ms. Maelie is at Howard Hospital. She is in a critical condition. It’s urgent. He requests your presence.” He said briefly.
Caiden’s expression did not change. He was quiet for exactly three seconds. The men around him were silent, watching them. Everyone in the corridor was watching.
Caiden turned to Michael. “Clear my schedule this afternoon.”
Michael blinked. “Sir, the Rainz meeting is in two hours.”
“Reschedule it.”
He picked up his coat from the back of the chair beside him. He did not ask any further questions. He turned to the lead man.
“Let’s go.”
He arrived at Howard Hospital twenty minutes later.
Dr. Owens met him at the theater entrance and briefed him in under two minutes. He handed him the scan results, the blood work, and the other patient's details sheet.
Caiden read everything without rushing. His face was still. Professional. Whatever had passed between him and Maelie had no place here. “Doctors have to do their job….to save lives even if it's their enemies right?”
He looked up from the file. “Prep theater two. I want a second ultrasound unit inside before we begin. And I want a uterine monitor running throughout.”
“Yes, Dr. Howard.”
He rushed in. The next two hours will see him inside the operating room.
“Everyone out, please!” This didn't sound like a request but an order. The first person to step out was Mr. Logan.
Nevan mumbled but Mr. Logan quickly grabbed his wrist, warning him.
“Let him do his job, my daughter is in a critical condition.”
After kicking everyone out, they stayed outside in the waiting area, Nevan stood without moving. Mr. Logan paced. Cara held her daughter’s handbag to her chest like it was something fragile. Everyone was silent.
When the theater doors finally opened, Dr. Caiden walked out. Three hours of intensive surgery was gone. He pulled his mask down around his chin. He looked at Mr. Logan.
“The ectopic pregnancy has been removed. The tube held. There was no rupture. The intrauterine pregnancy is stable.” He paused.
“She is going to be fine. Just a few more visits to the hospital, strict upholdment of medical procedures.”
“Following the methotrexate injection, HCG levels will need to be checked over several weeks to ensure that the pregnancy has completely resolved.” He added.
Mr. Logan exhaled heavily. He's been holding his breath for three hours. He pressed one hand over his chest and closed his eyes for a moment.
“She's my only daughter.” He breathed out.
“It's fine. She will be okay. I just came in for a voluntary duty as someone I knew. For the rest of the follow-up treatments, the other doctors will handle it.”
Cara turned away quickly when Caiden’s eyes set on him. She wanted to hide the fact that she had been crying. Nevan sat back in the chair and stared at the ceiling.
Then Mr. Logan extended his hand to Caiden. Caiden shook it.
“Thank you,” Mr. Logan said. His voice was unsteady. “Thank you, boss.”
The word landed strangely in Nevan’s ears. He arched his brow. Nevan’s head turned sharply. Cara turned sharply.
Caiden said nothing. He simply held Mr. Logan’s gaze for a brief moment, then gave a short nod and stepped back.
Nevan stared at Mr. Logan. “What did you just call him?” Mr. Logan cleared his throat. He adjusted his jacket.
A deep, long moment of silence followed as he gazed at Nevan. The atmosphere went thick with suspense. Mr. Logan was acting strange, like he was afraid of Caiden.
Nevan asked rudely to swipe off the feeling of importance Caiden seemed to have at that moment. “Will you be attending the Springville auction tonight?”
Caiden smirked thoughtfully, then nodded. “Good!” Nevan said.
Caiden ignored, he winked at Mr. Logan and left saying nothing further to anyone. Maelie was moved to the recovery ward an hour later.
When she opened her eyes, Nevan was beside her. He squeezed her hand, an excited glow lit on his face, same with Maelie. She squeezed back then looked up in thoughts.
Then she noticed Nevan’s expression. He was looking at something just past the doorway.
“What is it?” she asked. Her voice was still rough from the anesthesia.
Nevan was quiet for a moment. “Your father called Caiden boss.”
Maelie blinked slowly. “What?”
“When Caiden came out of the theater. Your dad shook his hand. And he called him boss.”
“The Caiden Dr. Mark told us he's using a fake card?”
“Yes, of course. It's even good he's attending the auction. Let's shame him there. A public disgrace will be the best.”
Maelie edged her brows. The idea sounded interesting. Just a few minutes ago, Dr. Caiden had saved her from death but now, she was joining Nevan in the idea.
Maelie sat up for a moment, guilt wanting to trip her but she quickly pushed it off.
Nevan shook his head snappily, trying to convince her. “He reached over and smoothed the blanket near her hand. “Caiden did his job. That is what doctors do. But this won't stop us from punishing an impersonator who still went on ahead to assault you.”
She called for her dad.
“Dad, today is the Springville Apartment Auction. I think I'm fine now and would love to get my apartment. Can you give me the Black card?” With this, she's gonna everyone that Caiden is fake.
Her face toned with seriousness as she asked, but Mr. Logan’s eyes avoided her, they were flickering. Then he pulled his phone to his ear picking a call.
Maelie was stunned, wondering who could have called at just the moment he asked him for the card.
“We will discuss later,” he said to Maelie, then walked away.
By the curve, he stopped and turned around. “But you've got to attend the auction tonight, represent me.” He didn't talk about the card, leaving both Maelie and Nevan stunned.
A long, silent gaze followed.

Chapter 33
The celebration of the relationship was done at Roman's house. Just Roman, Lena, Carlos and Zara. Roman wanted to make a toast to it and welcome Zara to the family officially. The next few days were good, everything followed the smoother path. Well, until a fine morning. A press story broke out from an anonymous source claiming Roman used political connections to secure the infrastructure deal unfairly. The heading was ghastly. “Roman secures infrastructure deals from frolicking rather than bidding.” The story went on to accuse Roman of being in a relationship with Elara, labelling it as the reason he got the job. Photos of him and Elara in the restaurant were also surfacing. The claims that he was cheating on his wife also surfaced and his image was slowly getting tarnished. The story was of major concern. It wasn't just a business story, but a public and moral one. Roman had always been seen as a moral person and this definitely made people question him. Even though the stor
Chapter 32
In the weeks after Edward Ashford’s arrest, Caiden experienced a silence unlike anything he had known since before the auction. The media moved on from scandal to something closer to praise, framing him as the doctor who had inherited a legacy, uncovered his mother’s truth, and helped bring down a decades-old criminal network. It was the sort of story journalists were quick to embrace, and for the first time, Caiden found he didn’t resist being at its center. But the stillness unsettled him. After so long in constant conflict, he had almost forgotten what it meant to live without it.“You need to relax,” Cecilia said one evening as they sat on the penthouse balcony, watching the sunset spread color across the sky. “The Consortium is finished. Ashford is in custody. The immediate threats are gone. You’re allowed to breathe again.”“There’s still his protégé,” Caiden said. “The woman who delivered the flash drive. We don’t know her identity, or what she’s really after.”“We do know she
Chapter 31
The following morning after the wedding, Caiden stirred before sunrise. Cecilia was still asleep beside him, one hand lightly resting on his chest, her breathing even and calm. He stayed still, watching the faint light of early morning slip through the curtains, his mind turning over everything that had already happened, and everything still ahead. On the nightstand lay the flash drive the unknown woman had delivered. Marcus had spent the night going through it, and a preliminary report was already waiting on Caiden’s phone. He hadn’t opened it yet. For a few hours, he had chosen to keep the war at a distance, just long enough to have one night that belonged entirely to them. Now the night has ended.Caiden eased himself out of bed as quietly as possible, careful not to disturb Cecilia. Despite his effort, she shifted anyway, she always seemed to notice.“Where are you going?” she asked, her voice still thick with sleep.“To go through Marcus’s report,” he said softly. “Go back to bed
Chapter 30
The wedding day came with clear skies and an unseasonably warm breeze. The rooftop garden had been completely transformed, like something out of a fairytale. Glass candles lined the walkways, soft light flickering against the evening air, while white and gold flowers covered every surface in carefully arranged abundance. Somewhere nearby, a string quartet played gently as guests settled into their seats, the music drifting through the open space.Michael had organized security with military-level precision. Every attendee was carefully screened, every supplier thoroughly checked. Plainclothes operatives were placed strategically across the hospital grounds, while FBI agents blended into the guest list. Commander Ellis had even brought in his team from London as a personal favor. If the Consortium intended to strike, they wouldn’t find a ceremony, they would find a heavily fortified stronghold.Caiden stood at the altar with Michael beside him as his best man. For the first time, ther
Chapter 29
The engagement was made public in a quiet way, a brief newspaper notice and an official statement from the hospital’s PR team. After months of intense media attention, Caiden and Cecilia had decided they wanted this announcement to remain personal and low-key.However, the news still spread quickly. Congratulations came in from all parts of Caiden’s circle. Evelyn Cho sent a large bouquet of flowers with a simple note that said, “Finally.” Marcus Webb dropped by Caiden’s office with a premium bottle of whiskey and a grin that seemed impossible to contain. From Dubai, Amir called to offer his blessings and even proposed hosting the wedding at one of his family’s palaces.Even Maelie sent a card. It was simple, handwritten, almost restrained: “Congratulations to you both. Wishing you every happiness.”Caiden read it once, then again, before quietly putting it away. The person she used to be in his life felt like a distant memory now, familiar, yet unreachable. They had both become diffe
Chapter 28
Michael found him the next morning, waiting outside his office with an expression that meant bad news."Edward Ashford is dead."Caiden stopped mid-stride. "How?""His body was found at an estate in Switzerland. Apparent heart attack. The Swiss authorities are calling it natural causes.""You don't believe that.""I don't believe in coincidence." Michael handed him a tablet with the Swiss police report. "He died three days ago, right after our press conference. Right after we released the evidence against him.""He knew we were coming for him. The stress—""Maybe. Or maybe someone else got to him first. Someone who didn't want him talking."Caiden stared at the report. Edward Ashford had been the architect of his mother's murder. The founder of the Consortium. The shadow that had hung over his family for thirty years. And now he was dead before Caiden could face him."There are others still out there," Michael continued. "The Consortium's leadership was never just one man. Ashford was
