Chapter 2: Magical Awakening

Today is the day of magical awakening.

As far as I understood, the Magic and Rift Association uses some stones to determine our affinity and grade of magic. There was no mention of what those stones were. The information about those stones is restricted.

As of now, I am sitting at my usual table in the classroom. Today is the day of awakening that happens once a year. All the students are under the intense pressure of what would happen.

It is known that the stones used for awakening varied in quality. The higher the quality, the costlier the stone is.

The students get a chance to use stones of better quality than that of those who can’t afford school. Only Tier-1 cities could afford premium quality awakening stones.

In tier-2 cities like Pearl City, the schools where wealthy students attend, schools cover the cost of high-quality awakening stones. The city bears the cost of using medium-quality stones for the children who attend schools for the poor and other such lads who can’t afford the poor schools.

As the tier goes down, so does the quality of the stone.

The quality of a stone increases the chance of awakening, but there may be a chance of an increase in the grade of magic.

Damon attended Pearl City school, the most costly school in the city. It was there he was bullied and got beaten.

After I entered this world, I immediately changed schools. I joined the Downtown school, which is a school for the poor.

There isn’t much difference between schools. One is filled with updated technological items such as projectors, virtual combat training, etc. At the same time, the other has no such technical things.

Here there was no bullying but most avoided me like the plague. I was not interested in them. They are only the people who I saw in school. As they aren’t either friendly or bullied me, I have no hate towards them, but if I get strong, I won’t be helping them.

The reason most avoided me was that they were afraid of major families. Some believed the rumors that tainted my parents’ names, spread by those assholes, and saw me like a plague.

There are only a few who exchanged a few words with me.

---

“Ahem”

Hearing the sound, everyone in the class straightened. It was their homeroom teacher. He taught our class about magic.

Though magical studies are of no importance in school, it plays a major role after school if one has a magic affinity.

Accompanying the homeroom teacher, there were two people whom I had never seen before. One was an old man, and the other looked young, no more than a few years older than me. I have no idea who they are, but judging from their attire, the old man is from the Magic and Rift Association, while the young one should be from Mayor’s office.

The homeroom teacher spoke, “Students, as you know, today, you get a chance to become something great in the future. So, without further ado, let us begin the awakening. I’ll call you one by one, so be quiet until then.”

Hearing that, the entire class is pin-drop silent. Nothing but the students’ nervous breathing could be heard.

An assistant entered the room, walked onto the platform, placed two square-shaped black stones on the table, and promptly exited the room. There are runes on both stones, but I couldn’t say what they are and what for.

“These are the stones that determine your future. First, Claire Riken, please come onto the platform.”

A red-haired girl stood up and walked to the platform. She has a fiery nature and loves to beat up everyone, even for a slight issue. In fact, she did beat most of the boys until the principal reprimanded her. After that, she learned how to beat others without leaving injuries. I don’t think there is a need to explain what happened after.

After Claire reached the platform, the teacher spoke, “Place one hand on one stone and the other hand on another stone. After that, close your eyes and concentrate on the right stone in front of you. You would feel the energy flowing into your body. It’s normal, so don’t panic and lose concentration. In the end, you feel the energy leaving both hands.”

Claire proceeded as the teacher explained. After two minutes, one could see that the runes glowed.

The teacher announced, “Congrats, Claire, your magical affinity is for Fire Element. The grade is Violet,” he turned around and said, “You saw what happened here. Claire’s affinity is the Fire element, determined by one of the stones and the grade by another. Violet is the highest of all grades, followed by Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red.”

“Moving forward, Stella Jacks….Fire, Blue grade.”

“Thomas Wingroot….Earth, Violet grade.”

“Mariam Dane….Wind, Blue grade.”

“Dean Westborn…Wind, Orange grade.”

Most of the students got the blue grade, a few Violet. The teacher is happy because of how the awakening is going on. For some reason, the home-room teacher looked at the old man every once in a while.

“Next, Damon Oswyn”

Finally, my turn; I hope I find my golden goose. I went up to the platform and did what the teacher explained before. I closed my eyes and placed one hand on each. I suddenly felt an inward flow of energy entering my body from one of the stones.

When I opened my eyes and looked around, there was nothing. All I could see was a small white ball shape in the distance. I know that it is my magic crystal. It is what would be shown to others by the awakening stone.

I tried to check it, and I felt chill. I immediately understood by that what my affinity is; it’s Ice. I still wanted to check my grade, so I proceeded towards it.

It’s YELLOW, fucking yellow. God damn it. Why god? Why can’t my life be a little better than before?

Suddenly I saw golden lines appear in front of me.

Ding!
