Chapter 1
1. Ambush
A young man could be seen running through the streets of Ashmere, the neon lights shining on his body. It was nighttime, and Ashmere was as beautiful as ever.
But this young man had no time to appreciate the beauty of the city. He was wearing a long black coat with golden yellow glyphs glowing on the body of the coat.
His hair was black and he had brown eyes. But what was very noticeable was the fact that he was handsome, as handsome as a TV star.
This handsome young man was Nathan, Nathan Reyes, and he was an Exorcist.
Yes, an exorcist.
Well, it all happened fifty years ago when humanoid beings, demons, appeared on planet Earth. They were physically stronger than humans, and to make matters worse, they were able to use special abilities that could only be imagined.
With their appearance, the world was in disarray. And within a month. They had managed to take over one continent, the continent of Gridterra.
The humans were unable to put up a fight. Missiles killed only the cannon fodder, bullets bounced off their grey skin, and negotiation... There was no negotiation.
They came in swiftly and made their presence known immediately. But even after taking over one continent, they were not satisfied; they wanted to take over the whole world.
That was when they appeared, the exorcists.
Using faith and beliefs, they harnessed a power known as holy energy. Holy energy was the bane of all demons; just their presence seemed to make the demons go into rage.
They used holy energy to do things that were novel to mankind and pushed back the demons. They held the battle front, but were unable to defeat the demons.
And for fifty years, humans have been fighting against the demons.Everybody wanted to be an exorcist, to protect humanity from the claws of the demons, and Nathan was no exception.
That was why he was here, running for his life with a demon chasing him closely behind.
He was nineteen years old and had recently awakened his holy core, and he now had access to holy energy.
So he thought, why not fight some demons, but...
"I never knew it would be so hard!!!"
Nathan exclaimed as he made a sharp turn into an alley, his hand glowing with golden energy. And following closely behind him was a demon.
It looked more like a ghost, like a broom with a white blanket over it. But this one was way scarier, with bony hands sticking out, and glowing orbs of red that should be its eyes. Its mouth was open, revealing rows of sharp teeth.
This was the weakest demon, more like a beast. The Lesser Wraith.
But it was way stronger than Nathan at the moment.
It seemed like Nathan's luck had run out as he made a sharp left turn and met with a dead end. With his back against a wall, he turned around to see the lesser wraith slowly floating toward him, its maws curled up in a grin.
"My journey cannot end here!!!"
Nathan was indignant. There was no way he was going to die here; he needed to do many things, like save his brother and find the reason for the death of his mother.
He closed his eyes, and his hand started forming hand seals. He wanted to perform one of the three skills that he knew.
A golden glow covered both of his hands as his eyes snapped open, only to see the face of the lesser Wraith right in front of him.
He was frightened, but there was no going back now.
"Seal of Binding"
A glyph was formed hovering above his hand, which was still in the form of the last seal. It was like a knot, made out of golden glowing chains.
Seeing this glyph, the wraith was alarmed. It was like it already knew the function of the glyph. But it was too close to Nathan now, and there was no way for it to dodge as Nathan threw the glyph.
The glyph latched onto the body of the wraith as the wraith exclaimed in horror.
Using the glyph as an anchor, multiple golden chains appeared, latching onto the body of the lesser wraith. Searing sounds like hot iron meeting flesh could be heard."SHRIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKK!!!!"
The Wraith shrieked in horror, but the chains didn't stop.
The chains covered its body before latching themselves to a glowing golden circle that appeared on the ground."Phew!"
Nathan breathed out a sigh of relief. Then the reality hit him: he had captured his first demon. He was beyond happy and was about to jump into the air when.
"Crack!!"
He forgot that the glyph/skill used his holy energy pool to materialise, and the fact that he just awakened his holy core meant that his energy pool was as small as it could be.
He was still a stage one novice.
The crackling sounds kept happening, and cracks appeared around the golden chains. Nathan was alarmed.
"Oh no"
Once again, he started forming hand seals, the sound of cracks becoming more frequent. Two of the five chains on the body of the wraith had already fallen to the ground. But Nathan paid no mind to it and continued with his hand seals.
"Purification Flame"
The glyph of a small flame, like the light of a candle, appeared above Nathan's hand, which was still in the form of the hand seal.
At this point, only one chain remained, and the wraith was going to break out any time soon.
Nathan threw the glyph at the body of the wraith, and like fire meeting dry grass, the wraith was engulfed in golden flames.
Its shrieks resounded in the surroundings, giving chills to anyone who heard them. But Nathan was unperturbed. He had a deep hatred for the demons, so seeing the demon in so much pain was more like a melody to him.
"I can't hold on for much longer."
Nathan could feel his holy energy draining away. But the death of the wraith was imminent.
A few minutes later, Nathan's holy energy had finished, but thankfully, the wraith was already dead.
In its place was a dark red orb, the size of a ping pong ball, that seemed to be slowly turning black.
Nathan picked the orb and admired it a little before putting it in the pocket of his cloak.
"Ring Ring!!"
The vibration of his phone in his pocket got his attention. Nathan brought the phone out of his pocket and looked at the caller ID of the person calling him.
"Park Jin"
Nathan chuckled a little before picking up the call.
"WHERE THE F*CK ARE YOU?"
Nathan had to move the phone away from his ears to avoid bursting his eardrums.
"Why the hell do you shout so much? Do you want to make me deaf?" Nathan said
"It's not my fault, I have an unreasonable roommate." "You've been out the whole day, and it's only now that I hear any news. Just because you awakened your core doesn't make you Superman. I also awakened my core, but you don't see me going around doing stupid sh*t"
Jin was so angry.
"There's no need to worry, Jin, I'll be at the apartment in no time."
Nathan was about to cut the call when he saw something that made him stop in his tracks.
On the wall in front of him, A blue portal opened up, and a demon walked out. Not just any demon, but a humanoid demon.
It had grey skin with two long horns sticking out of its forehead. Its irises were a deep red colour. What was weird was the fact that it was wearing cooperate attire.
A black suit with a white shirt and a red tie, along with black trousers. Its hand was behind its back in a gentlemanly manner.
Its red eyes locked onto Nathan, and a grin broke out on its face.
"Found you"
Its voice sounded in Nathan's ear as if it were right beside Nathan.
Nathan, on reflex, jumped back to put some space between them. But unfortunately, the demon was there waiting for him.
"Didn't you miss me, Nathan, my boy?" the demon said, standing in front of Nathan, its hand still behind its back.
"Get away from me!!" Nathan screamed as he jumped back.
His eyes were red with anger. He didn't even register the fact that this was a noble demon that was way stronger than the recently awakened Nathan.
He was already making plans to kill the demon.
This particular demon, Valak, had some history with Nathan and had even caused him trauma for many years in his life. But that was a story for another day.
Nathan's mind had already gone into overdrive, not thinking of ways to escape, but thinking of ways to kill the demon.
There was no way his glyphs would work, since he was low on holy energy, and it would take too much time to perform the hand seals.
"Then I'll just have to tire him out."
Nathan had a plan now, and it was time to implement it.
Valak appeared behind him, a wicked grin on his face.
"Too late..."

Demon Core Exorcist 11. Legacy Of the Crypts
As he walked through the corridor, Nathan ran his hands along the neon glyphs on the walls, giving off beautiful glows. He finally had time to notice that they were beautiful when he wasn't fighting for his life. Before long, he found himself in what looked like a small cubicle, large enough to fit about five people. There was what seemed to be a gate surrounding it. But it looked more like an ancient elevator. And in the elevator, he saw a smiling Jin.He just walked into the elevator like someone who had just escaped the jaws of death. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence was heavy, filled only by the grinding of gears above as the elevator descended. Then Jin chuckled softly. "You look like you wrestled with death itself."Nathan smirked weakly. "Something like that. What about you?"Jin flexed his gauntlets. "Let's just say… the Crypt doesn't pull punches. But hey, I survived. Got some bruises to prove it."They both laughed lightly, though the sound carried exhausti

Demon Core Exorcist 10. Trial of Twin Paths: The Echo Knight
The air inside the new chamber was colder.Nathan stepped through the arched doorway, and the stone slammed shut behind him. This was not like the other trials. There were no swinging blades, no shifting tiles, no cover. The arena was a wide, perfect circle of smooth black stone. The walls curved upward, vanishing into darkness. There was no door on the other side.Only silence. Then the voice came, deeper than before, with a weight that pressed into his chest:"To wield strength without speed is to be caught. To wield speed without strength is to be broken. Show me you can be both."Nathan stopped for a moment, the voice in his head giving him information, and every sentence it made had a profound meaning, something that Nathan admired. From the centre of the arena, the ground rippled. Stone flowed upward like liquid, forming a shape. It was a man.Same height as Nathan. Same build. Even the same face. But its eyes glowed faint silver, and in its hands were two daggers, one with a he

Demon Core Exorcist 9. The Path of Control
The corridor after Jin's first trial was short and quiet. He stepped through into a new chamber, smaller than the endurance arena, but far more dangerous. The floor was narrow and uneven, made of shifting stone plates that rose and sank without warning. Some sections had jagged spikes jutting from the walls, others had thick columns that dropped from above like hammers. And there was barely any open space. This wasn't going to be about lasting. This was going to be about precision. The voice spoke, calm but firm:"Strength without control shatters itself. Control without strength fades. Show me balance in both."A deep rumble rolled through the room. From the far side, a heavy gate rose, and two massive figures stepped out. They were humanoid, but unlike the smooth metallic hounds from the last trial, these were Sentinels, towering, broad-shouldered constructs with armour-like plating. Their arms were thick, ending in blunt, heavy fists that could crush stone. Their heads were shaped

Demon Core Exorcist 8. Trial of Twin Paths: Path Of Agility
The hallway after the Path of Strength was narrow and silent. Blue light ran through shallow grooves in the stone floor, pulsing gently like a heartbeat. Nathan followed the light until it widened into another chamber. It was nothing like the first. The "floor" here wasn't a floor at all; it was an open void, stretching down into darkness so deep that Nathan couldn't see the bottom. Suspended in the air were floating platforms of various shapes and sizes. Some were wide and steady, others were little more than narrow planks. Many shifted slowly, either drifting from side to side or rotating just enough to throw off anyone who wasn't careful.Chains hung from the unseen ceiling above, connected to massive swinging blades. Some moved lazily, others fast enough that the edges blurred in the dim light. A low, rhythmic whoosh echoed through the chamber every time a blade passed. On the far side of the void was another stone doorway, smaller than the one at the end of the Strength trial, bu

Demon Core Exorcist 7. The Path of Endurance
The wall behind Jin sealed shut with a heavy clang. He was alone now.The hallway ahead was short, ending in an archway carved with the image of two armoured hands pressed together. Faint lines of orange light ran through the carvings like veins.Just like Nathan, Jin also felt like he couldn't use energy, but just to confirm, he performed some hand seals, but nothing happened. Jin wasn't surprised. He quickly put the camera away. While this was peak entertainment, he didn't know if what would come next could destroy the camera, and other than that, he had a feeling that if he recorded this and it got out, it would be troublesome for both him and Nathan. And he didn't want that.As Jin stepped through, the floor beneath him hummed. The chamber he entered was huge, a wide, circular arena with high walls made of dark stone. The floor was divided into large, square tiles, each one glowing faintly. The ceiling was far above, lost in shadow, but Jin could hear faint metallic clicks comin

Demon Core Exorcist 6. Trial of Twin Paths: Path of Strength
In a few seconds, he made his decision and walked towards the path of strength. As soon as he stepped into the pathway, he felt something, like he was sealed. Immediately, he thought about activating one of his skills, and instead of the skill being activated, what he saw was a system message. [ERROR!! Holy Core Sealed]Nathan was surprised; this wasn't what he had expected. He never knew something like this was going to happen, but he didn't panic. He quickly tried activating his night gaze, but the same message appeared. "Valak, are you there?"Nathan asked, but he received no response. He didn't know whether he couldn't just communicate with Valak or if Valak just decided to mess with him at this point. But it didn't matter. "So this was a trap after all"Nathan said as he called up his system interface. [Name: Nathan Reyes][Race: Hybrid Lesser Demon][Demon Core: Monoceros (Grade 1)] (Sealed)[Holy Core: Novice (Grade 1)] (Sealed)[Sin: Gluttony][STR: 17][AGL:19][DEX: 15]
