CHAPTER 2 — The Richest Madman in the World

Gavin woke up after sunrise. He still remembered how he ended up sleeping there. But strangely enough, he didn’t care that much.

Right now, it felt more like he had just gone through some bizarre dream.

“A system?” Gavin muttered. “Yeah right... I must’ve been thinking too much.”

“And what the hell was wrong with that old man anyway?”

Walking along the sidewalks of Riverton City, Gavin rubbed his stomach from hunger. Since last night, the only thing in his stomach had been a single can of beer.

Eventually, he entered a fast-food restaurant.

After placing his order, he picked a seat, and it didn’t take long before the food arrived.

While eating, Gavin kept thinking about what he was supposed to do now.

Even though last night had been one of the worst moments of his life, somehow, after waking up, he felt strangely relieved.

Even the pain in his head and nose had disappeared. But in the end, his thoughts drifted back to what happened the night before.

The moment he remembered what Bella and Brandon did to him, Gavin immediately lost his appetite.

He still couldn’t understand how they could be that cruel to him. If Bella truly didn’t see a future with him, she could’ve just said it directly.

And Brandon... Gavin couldn’t even remember ever doing anything to that bastard. They had never spoken. Never had any problems.

Yet Brandon looked like he genuinely hated him.

“Ah, fuck... why am I even thinking about those two assholes again?!”

Gavin immediately forced the food in his mouth down with his drink and ended his breakfast early.

But the moment he reached into his pocket to grab his wallet—His expression froze.

“Oh shit... where is it?”

There was nothing there. Even after checking every pocket on his clothes.

“Shit! Shit! Shit!”

Gavin clenched his teeth in frustration. At this point, it genuinely felt like bad luck would never leave him alone.

Then suddenly, he remembered the old homeless man from last night.

“Did that old bastard drug the beer?” Gavin thought.

Honestly, it made perfect sense. After all, right after drinking that beer, he felt intense pain before losing consciousness completely.

“Fuck...” he cursed again after realizing his phone was missing too.

Gavin looked around the restaurant, hoping to spot someone he knew who could help him.

But the place wasn’t crowded. And unfortunately, he didn’t recognize anyone.

Completely hopeless, Gavin stared blankly at the table. Then suddenly— His eyes narrowed at a word printed on a small object sitting there.

“Hope...?”

Ding!

The moment Gavin muttered that name, something shocking happened.

A holographic panel suddenly appeared before his eyes.

“What the hell?!”

Gavin blinked repeatedly and shook his head hard, thinking it was some kind of hallucination.

But the panels remained there. “Am I hallucinating?” he muttered again.

Yet no matter how many times he blinked or shook his head, the panels refused to disappear.

“What are these panels...?”

Gavin slowly began reading the words displayed in front of him. Several bars and windows floated within his vision.

“So... it wasn’t a dream?”

Gavin had seen these panels once before. Right after finishing the beer given to him by that homeless old man who stole his burger. But back then, it felt like nothing more than a dream.

Now... This felt completely real. Right in front of him, Gavin could see everything clearly.

Gavin swallowed hard several times as he tried to process everything displayed before him.

But given his current situation, his attention immediately focused on the transaction options listed there. It seemed to support every type of payment method.

Maybe even fingerprints.

“Can this actually work in the real world?” Gavin wondered.

The entire thing looked more like a game feature than something that could exist in reality.

Still, time kept passing. Several employees had already started glancing at him suspiciously. That only made him more anxious.

“Should I just try it?”

Gavin was genuinely conflicted. Trying something this absurd would make him look completely insane.

But after thinking about it for a while, he finally gave up resisting the temptation.

“If it doesn’t work... I’ll just figure out another way to pay.”

Gavin stood up and walked directly toward the cashier. If this failed, he would simply pretend to be an idiot.

Maybe they’d force him to wash dishes or something. Honestly, he didn’t care anymore.

“Hello, miss... I forgot my phone and wallet. Is it possible to pay using my fingerprint?”

Even while nervous, Gavin forced himself to ask.

“Oh, you mean palm scan payment? Sure. One moment please.”

“Oh... okay. Thank you.” Gavin replied awkwardly.

The cashier quickly entered the total amount before rotating the payment terminal toward him.

“Please scan here.”

Gavin became even more nervous as he slowly raised his hand and placed his palm above the scanner pattern on the screen.

But the moment his hand aligned properly—

The indicator flashed green.

And suddenly—

Ding...

The sound didn’t come from the scanner.

It came from inside his head. At the same time, something changed within the system interface in his vision.

When Gavin checked it again, the MMS value had decreased.

[Remaining MMS = $99,999,992]

“Thank you, Mister Valerio. Your payment has been successfully processed.”

Gavin’s eyes widened. Because when the cashier confirmed the payment, she also called him by his last name.

Which meant, This system could actually function in the real world.

Gavin’s brain immediately began processing everything. The System balance clearly stated unlimited liquidity. And the transaction had successfully registered under his identity.

Which indirectly meant— At this moment... He had become the richest man in the world.

A smile slowly spread across Gavin’s face.

Then came a small chuckle. And moments later—

“Hahahahaha!!”

“Yes!... Yes!!... YES!!”

Gavin was so overwhelmed with excitement that he completely ignored the stares from the cashier and everyone else inside the restaurant.

The same young man who had been humiliated and abandoned by his girlfriend for being poor... Walked out of the restaurant laughing like a madman.

Right now, to anyone watching— Gavin truly looked insane.

But who cared?

Because insane or not... That didn’t change the fact that now— He was the richest madman in the world.

“Profit?” Gavin asked, half under his breath. “Yeah.” Caleb immediately leaned forward. “How much?” Honestly, Gavin himself didn’t really understand crypto that well. The basics weren’t hard to grasp, but he had never actually bought a single token before. He didn’t even have an exchange app. He had only heard other people talk about it. “You guys are still here?” Gavin asked when he realized Nina and the others were still standing behind him. “W-We...” Nina stammered slightly. “Just tell us already!” one of the girls behind Nina shouted. “Yeah, we wanna know too!” another added shamelessly. There was no way Gavin could escape now after starting all this. He glanced left and right. Every eye was still locked onto him. So after thinking for a few seconds, he finally answered casually. “One hundred.” Adam frowned. Dylan tilted his head slightly. Nina and almost everyone else in The Yard also seemed confused because the number was way too short. “One hundred what?” “One hu

You can think whatever you want,” he said. “But who exactly are you?”Nina slightly pulled her head back, but Gavin still wasn’t done.“And why is whatever I do any of your busine—”His words suddenly stopped when his eyes landed on one of the girls standing beside Nina.“Oh...” Gavin slowly nodded. “Alright. Now I get it.”At that moment, he finally realized where the ri

Gavin walked slowly along the campus pathway with his phone pressed against his ear. Several shopping bags were still hanging from his hands, swaying lightly with each step. The night air felt colder now.“Olivia...” Gavin frowned slightly. “What exactly did you mean earlier?”Several seconds of silence passed before Olivia’s voice finally came from the other side of the call.“Gavin, if your goal is simply to start a business, then everything is fairly straightforward. We choose an industry, find a good location, and start investing.” Her voice remained calm as usual. “But if what you want to build is your own network, then that becomes a different problem.”Gavin stayed silent as he continued walking, waiting for Olivia to continue.“We need information,” Olivia finally said. “We need to know which networks are beginning to weaken, who’s fighting who, who’s losing money, and who’s becoming desperate.
