Daniel
“Five million dollars?”
My wife’s head snapped toward me. She hurried over and reached for the phone. “What exactly do you want him to do?” she asked, immediately putting the call on speaker.
The voice on the other end remained calm. “We need your cooperation in locating Adrian Vale’s reconstruction.”
“Reconstruction?”
“Yes. We recovered Adrian’s neural architecture after his death and reconstructed his consciousness. It contains information from Adrian’s original mind that our surviving research cannot access.”
I frowned. “And how can I help you with that?”
“We know he contacted you. We need you to help us establish a stable connection. Once we recover the reconstruction, five million dollars will be transferred to your account.”
I lowered my voice. “What happens to Adrian…or his consciousness, whatever?”
“That is not your concern.”
My expression hardened. “It became my concern the moment you called my house.”
There was a brief silence.
“We’ll send someone to explain everything.”
The call ended.
My wife folded her arms. “You’re seriously still considering this? Five million dollars, Daniel…”
“I don’t know what to consider yet.”
“Daniel, listen to me. We need that money.”
-----
Twenty minutes later, a black vehicle stopped outside our house.
The doorbell rang.
I opened the door to find two security officers and a woman in a dark suit.
“Daniel Reed?” The woman straightened.
“Yes?”
“We’re here on behalf of Veyron Continuum. We’d like to speak to you about Adrian Vale.”
My expression hardened. “Come in.”
They entered the living room. Camille followed, curiosity written across her face.
“Have your seats,” I said, sitting on the sofa. Camille sat beside me.
“So…I’m listening.”
The woman nodded. “Your friend contacted you because his reconstruction escaped our controlled environment into a restricted network.”
I frowned. “I don’t understand.”
“Adrian Vale is dead, as you already know. What contacted you was a digital consciousness.”
I stared at her. “So you’re saying that’s not Adrian?”
“It’s a consciousness built from Adrian’s neural data. It has his memories, personality patterns, and much of his cognitive structure, but it isn’t a biological body.”
I leaned back. “And who gave you the legal right to reconstruct my dead friend’s consciousness?”
Camille’s head jerked toward me before she gave them an awkward smile. “Don’t mind him. I’m sure you’re doing the right thing. Just proceed to the five-million-dollar offer.”
The woman looked back at me. “Veyron owns the technology used to create the reconstruction, and Adrian’s research was transferred to the company under a research agreement.”
“Transferred research isn’t the same as consent to recreate a human consciousness.”
Camille’s foot hit mine under the table. She gave me a pleading look.
“We have legal authorization.”
“From whom?”
She opened her briefcase and slid a document across the table. “From the estate and the applicable research agreement.”
I glanced at it. “And does that authorization give you the right to terminate the consciousness whenever you want?”
A brief silence followed.
“Our legal department considers the reconstruction company property.”
My jaw tightened. “So that’s what this is all about.”
Camille leaned toward me. “Babe, enough. This isn’t necessary. Your friend is already dead.”
I looked at her before turning back to the representatives.
“We need to recover it before it causes further problems or becomes dangerous and uncontrollable.”
Camille’s hands tightened around my arm.
“Then get to the point. What do you want from me?”
The woman gestured to the security officer beside her. “Let me have it.”
He handed her a small black device. She placed it on the table.
“This will allow us to track Adrian’s reconstruction when he tries to reach you again.”
I picked it up. “What is it?”
“A secure neural communication relay. It allows the signal to pass through you while we trace the reconstruction.”
“And Adrian won’t know?”
“He won’t see the tracking process.”
I turned the device over. “Is it safe?”
“Yes.”
“You’re sure?”
“It should be.”
My eyes narrowed. “Should be?”
“There are no expected complications.”
Before I could ask anything else, she pushed another document toward me.
“Five million dollars for your cooperation.”
My wife immediately leaned forward. “Daniel, we’re doing it.”
I opened my mouth. “We—”
“We’re doing it.”
She smiled.
I sighed and looked back at the representatives.
“Fine. We’ll do it.”
The woman nodded. “Excellent.”
I attached the device.
The screen lit up.
CONNECTION READY.
___________________________
The alarm continued to blare throughout the Veyron facility, its sharp siren echoing through the security control room.
Red warning lights flashed across the walls.
Multiple monitors came alive at once.
NEURAL LINK ACTIVE
EXTERNAL CONNECTION DETECTED
A security analyst immediately pulled up the relay feed.
Daniel Reed appeared on the main screen, sitting in his living room with the small black relay attached to him.
A second window opened beside him.
Adrian’s face appeared.
“Daniel?”
The analysts exchanged quick glances.
The conversation was being transmitted directly through the relay.
They could hear everything.
“They came to my house,” Daniel said.
“Who?”
“Veyron.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What did they give you?”
Daniel lifted the relay toward the camera.
The analyst enlarged the feed.
Adrian immediately reacted.
“Don’t activate that.”
“Adrian, listen to me—you are dead”
“Don’t do it, Daniel. I don’t believe anything they said and don’t believe it too..please.”
“Sorry, but you are incomplete consciousness and your emotions can change at anytime or you become dangerous and further causing damage” he touched the device, a second window appeared on my screen.
The security officer beside the analyst smiled faintly.
The analyst watched the neural readings.
The moment the connection stabilized, a new signal appeared.
NEURAL BRIDGE ESTABLISHED
Daniel suddenly stiffened.
Adrian noticed.
“Daniel, get that thing off you.”
Daniel reached for the relay. His fingers barely moved. “What the hell—” His face suddenly tightened. “Adrian…” His breathing became uneven.
“Daniel!”
The numbers on the screen began climbing.
NEURAL EXTRACTION: 17%
“They’re using your brain as a bridge.”
The security analyst looked toward the officer. “He knows.”
“Then close the channel before he interferes.”
The analyst entered the command.
ACCESS DENIED
He tried again.
COMMAND REJECTED
“What?”
Adrian’s signal had already moved deeper into the connection.
The network map changed.
A red line spread from the neural bridge into the relay’s internal control system.
“He’s inside the relay.”
The room erupted. “Block the access!”
The analyst activated the security barrier.
ACCESS DENIED
“Again!”
He tried another authorization.
OVERRIDE FAILED
Adrian’s signal continued moving.
Daniel suddenly gasped. “I can't move, Adrian!”
Adrian’s fingers moved rapidly through the digital interface, trying to override the connection and free Daniel from the relay.
The analyst watched the neural readings spike.
“He’s trying to disconnect the bridge.”
“Stop him.”
“I can’t!”
The analyst opened the relay controls.
“His signal is overriding the control channel.”
“Then force the shutdown.”
“I can’t. The relay is still connected to Daniel.”
“Do it!”
The analyst froze.
“Sir, if we force it, we could damage his nervous system.”
The security officer slammed a hand against the console.
"I don't care!”
On the monitor, Adrian’s signal suddenly surged.
DISCONNECT COMMAND DETECTED
The analyst’s face drained. “He found the disconnect channel.”
“Block it!”
ACCESS DENIED
“Again!”
ACCESS DENIED
“Lock the control layer!”
ACCESS DENIED
The security officer stared at the screen. “What’s happening?”
The analyst swallowed. “He’s taking control.”
The neural bridge suddenly collapsed.
Daniel fell against the table.
The connection disappeared.
A Veyron security alert suddenly appeared.
UNAUTHORIZED DEVICE CONTROL
There was another message appearing.
UNAUTHORIZED REMOTE ACCESS
“No. No..” he has gained access to the physical relay device
The room at Veyron went silent.
The relay was gone from their control.
They could no longer see through its camera. They couldn’t access its tracking system. Every attempt to reconnect returned the same message.
ACCESS DENIED.
One of the analysts tried again.
Nothing.
“He has complete control of the relay,” the analyst said quietly.
The security officer stared at the dead monitor.
“Can we shut it down?”
“No. We don’t have a connection anymore.”
The officer’s jaw tightened.
Adrian Vale had taken their only direct route into the restricted network.
And he had taken their device with him.
I woke with a sharp gasp.
My hand flew to my chest as I struggled to breathe.
Camille was beside me immediately. “Daniel!”
I pushed myself upright, disoriented. The room spun for a second. “What happened?”
“You collapsed.”
I looked down at my arm. The small relay was still attached. I tore it off and threw it onto the table.
My eyes fixed on it. “They lied to me.”
Camille frowned. “What?”
I looked at her. “That device wasn’t just for tracking Adrian.”
She went silent.
I remembered the pressure in my head. The loss of control. The way my body had stopped responding.
“They used my neural system to reach him.”
Camille’s expression changed. “You’re sure?”
I picked up my phone. My hands were still slightly shaking. “They told me there were no expected complications.”
I stared at the relay. “That wasn’t a complication.” My voice hardened. “That was an attack.”
I opened my laptop.
Camille watched me. “What are you doing?”
“Filing an emergency injunction.”
She blinked. “Against Veyron?”
“Yes.”
“Daniel, they offered us five million dollars.”
“They also nearly damaged my brain.”
She opened her mouth, but I cut her off. “And they intend to erase Adrian’s consciousness.”
I looked at the relay again.
Whatever Adrian was now, Veyron had created him. And then tried to use him. I wasn’t going to let them decide what happened to him anymore without a fight.
I began typing.
PETITION FOR EMERGENCY INJUNCTIVE RELIEF
The first claim was simple:
Veyron had subjected me to an undisclosed neural procedure without informed consent.
The second was more complicated.
I requested an immediate court order preventing Veyron from deleting, resetting, extracting, or altering Adrian Vale’s reconstructed consciousness until the court could determine what legal rights, if any, applied to him.
Camille stared at the screen. “You’re really doing this?”
I looked at her. “Yes.”
I attached the medical readings from the relay. Then the contract Veyron had given me. Then the recording of their conversation.
Finally, I submitted the filing.
The confirmation appeared.
EMERGENCY HEARING REQUESTED.
I leaned back.
—-
The emergency hearing request reached Veyron less than an hour later.
Dr. Elias read the document twice. “They’re taking legal action.”
Dr. Mercer exhaled shakenly.
A technician approached the console.“There’s another problem. The relay didn’t simply disconnect. It transferred part of its access architecture before Adrian took control.”
“To where?”
The technician looked at the screen.
A warning appeared.
CONTINUITY SYSTEM ACCESS DETECTED.
Dr. Elias went still. “That system is offline.”
“It was.”
Another window opened.
CONTINUUM INSTANCE DATABASE
The technician stared. “There’s an active instance.”
Dr. Elias went still. “That system is offline.”
“It was.”
Another window opened.
CONTINUITY INSTANCE 02 — STATUS: ACTIVE
Dr. Elias stared at the screen. “No.”
“Sir?”
“Instance 02 is supposed to remain dormant.”
The technician’s fingers moved rapidly across the console. “Something just initiated the activation sequence.”
Dr. Elias stepped closer.
The technician opened the neural record. A video feed appeared; a man sat inside another containment chamber. He looked exactly like Adrian. His eyes lifted toward the camera.

A Deal With Veyron
DanielMy phone rang just as I was about to return to the case file.I answered immediately. “Adrian?”“Daniel.” His voice was quieter than usual.“What happened?”“I was about to call you earlier, but I got distracted. I just remembered now, and I need to tell you something.”I straightened in my chair. “What is it?”“I found out that Veyron has started digging into your family.”My expression hardened. “My family?”“Yes. They’ve been looking into your personal life, your family records, and other information that has nothing to do with the court case.”I stood from my chair. “How much do they know?”“I don’t know exactly how much they’ve found. I was about to call you when my wife called me, and I had to deal with something. By the time I was done, it slipped my mind. I only remembered now.”I walked toward the window. “You should have called me immediately.”“I know. That’s why I’m calling now. Daniel, be careful.”“I will.”“No, I mean it. If Veyron has started digging into your f
A Secret Code
DanielI remained beside the desk for a while after my son disappeared upstairs. The house had gone quiet again, but the silence felt different now. I could still hear the faint movement of footsteps above me, followed by the closing of a door.I looked at the relay.A part of me wanted to destroy it and forget the entire situation. If I had never accepted Veyron’s offer, none of this would have happened. Camille would not be frightened, my son would not be listening from the stairs, and I would not be preparing travel documents because I was afraid of what a company might do to my family. But then I remembered what had happened when I connected the device.I remembered the pain.I remembered struggling to breathe while something that was never supposed to be inside my nervous system forced its way through me. Most importantly, I remembered Adrian fighting to break the connection before it killed me.I picked up the relay and turned it over in my hand.Adrian had saved my life. That f
Between Family and Loyalty to a Friend
DanielDaniel walked into the room and immediately noticed Camille sitting there. She had just finished her conversation with Adrian, but the look on her face told him that something had happened. He stopped in front of her, his eyes narrowing slightly. “What did you do?”Camille didn’t answer.Daniel frowned and looked at her carefully. “Camille, were you talking to Adrian?”She remained silent, looking away.“Camille.”She said nothing.Daniel took a slow breath, trying not to lose his patience. “What did you tell him?”She still refused to answer. Instead, she looked up at him, then down at her hands, her expression growing more irritated by the second.Daniel stared at her for a moment before sitting down. He reached for the relay and tried to reconnect with Adrian. The connection took a few seconds before it finally opened.“Adrian?”There was a brief silence before Adrian answered “Daniel.”Daniel leaned forward. “Camille just spoke to you, didn’t she?”“Yes.”His heart sank sli
You Should Have Stayed Dead
Dr. Elias Dr. Elias stood inside the conference room, staring at the large screen in front of him. Daniel Reed’s name was displayed across it while Victor sat at the other end of the table, completely calm. “He filed the injunction,” Elias said. “I know.” “He’s refusing to withdraw it.” Victor leaned back in his chair. “He will.” Elias looked at him. “And if he doesn’t?” Victor’s expression didn’t change. “Then we make sure he understands what refusing us will cost him.” Elias glanced at the files on the table. The legal team had already prepared their response. They would challenge Daniel’s authority, question his claims, and argue that Adrian was corporate property rather than a legal person. But Victor wasn’t interested in stopping there. “You want to destroy his career?” Elias asked. “I want him to become too afraid to continue.” Victor picked up one of the documents and glanced at it. “He really believes the court can protect Adrian.” “He’s a lawyer. That’s wha
A Dangerous Choice
AdrianI had spent the last several minutes studying the relay, trying to understand how much control I actually had over the device. Veyron had built it to track me, but when I broke through their connection, something had changed. Their access was gone, and I could now see parts of the system they had never intended me to reach. I moved through the relay’s interface carefully, following the connections one at a time.I searched through the available channels until I found the one I was looking for. Daniel. I activated it. For several seconds, nothing happened. Then the connection opened.“Daniel?” There was silence. I waited. “Adrian?” His voice came through the relay, and I almost smiled. “Yeah.”A breath escaped him. “Are you okay?”“I’m the one who should be asking you that.”“I’m fine.”“You collapsed.”“I know.”“You had a neural relay attached to your body.”“I know that too.”“And you still sound surprisingly calm.”Daniel gave a tired laugh. “Trust me, I’m not calm.”I lea
Let Them Call Me Crazy
DanielThe chamber fell silent.Dr. Elias stared at the darkened containment units for a moment before turning away. “Secure the chamber.”The security officers moved immediately, locking the doors behind the scientists as they left the containment room.——————————————————————The filing had already been submitted, and several documents were spread across the dining table in front of me. I went through the evidence again, checking the records from the neural relay and the information I had gathered about Veyron.Camille stood across from me, watching without touching any of the papers.“You actually filed it,” she said.I didn’t look up. “Yes.”She let out a frustrated breath. “Daniel, do you understand what you’re doing?”“I do.”“No, I don’t think you do.” She folded her arms. “They offered us five million. Five million, Daniel. And now you’re taking them to court?”“They attacked me.”“And you think they will just sit there and accept that?” she asked. “These are not ordinary peopl
