Chapter 005:  Copies Attack Skills!

First things first: patch up the Giant Beast Mantis.

Cole and Glowbug zipped through the swamp edges, farming five Tier-1 crystals in no time. Bigger, badder beasts needed more juice to heal—simple math.

Fun fact: even after evolving into a sleek Tier-2 Glimmer Beetle, Cole still called it Glowbug.

Crystal energy poured in, and right before his mind’s eye, the mantis’s cracked shell sealed up, shredded organs knit back together, and torn muscles rebraided themselves.

Once it was good to go, Cole summoned the big guy back out.

Nearly three feet of pure nightmare fuel. Giant murder-bug vibes hit like a freight

train

With his jacked-up stats, Cole felt like the undisputed king of the swamp fringes. Untouchable.

And yeah, the next few fights proved it: total stomps.

Glowbug scouted ahead, harassed targets, and tanked hits when needed—basically a flying, glowing auto-shield with attitude.

Cole and the mantis? Pure offense. Spiked club for the finisher, scythes for the flair. Crystal farming went from “decent” to “absolutely broken.”

【Ding! Your phantom beast Giant Beast Mantis gained 485 EXP!】

【Giant Beast Mantis leveled up to Lv18!】

【Lv19!】

【Lv20!】

【Ding! Giant Beast Mantis gained insight during leveling—Gale Slash evolved into Extreme Shadow Slash!】

【Extreme Shadow Slash: Active skill. Compresses wind element to the absolute limit on the scythe blades, unleashing a hyper-speed thrusting strike too fast for the naked eye. Insane penetration and raw destructive power.】

【Note: So swift it leaves only afterimages; so sharp it cuts the wind itself.】

Skill evolution?!

Cole’s heart did a backflip. Extreme Shadow Slashsounded like it belonged in an endgame boss fight—way beyond basic Gale Slash. Rare, nasty, and oh-so-satisfying.

Then it hit him: that familiar wave of perfect understanding. Divine Resonancedidn’t just copy stats—it burned the entire skill mastery into his muscle memory. Wind compression, explosive burst timing, everything. He could use Extreme Shadow Slashtoo.

Instinct took over. Fingers snapped into a knife-hand, energy pooling at the tips with a faint, hungry hum as air warped around them.

Casual test jab at a nearby tree—thick enough to need three guys hugging it.

BANG!

Clean hole punched straight through, bark exploding outward.

That was barely a flick. Full power?

“This talent… is straight-up broken,”Cole muttered, while reining in the hype.

Future? Unlimited.

Quick note: Cole was rocking full Tier-2 human stats now, while the mantis was still Tier-1. Took roughly two mantis levels for him to gain one. Worth it.

But as hours bled into days, Cole’s brow furrowed. Something felt… off.

Stronger beasts showing up way too often.

More classmate corpses turning up too—quiet reminders that this “newbie” trial had gone horribly wrong.

“This zone is changing. Fast.”

Unease gnawed at him.

Bzzz-bzzz…

“Huh? You’re picking up a live human? Injured?”

Glowbug’s urgent buzz put Cole on high alert. He crept forward through the bushes, scanning every shadow.

Not far ahead, in a muddy depression: a crumpled figure in an Aurum North High uniform, coated in mud and blood. One leg twisted at a sickening angle. Breathing shallow, but alive.

Classmate. James—yeah, that sounded right.

Cole didn’t charge in like a hero. Triple-checked for threats first, then approached slow.

“Hey, you still with me?”

Crouched down, gentle nudge.

James’s eyes cracked open. Saw the uniform—hope flickered. “H-help… beasts… everywhere… too strong…”

Cole pulled water and hemostatic bandages from his kit, patching the worst of it with quick, practiced hands.

“What happened, man? How’d you end up like this?”

A few sips of water later, James found his voice—shaky, bitter. “Me and some Class 3 kids… lucked into Marcus’s group. Thought we were golden with his Tier-2 beast leading the charge…”

He spilled it all in pieces.

At first, Marcus played the big-bro role—hunting, protecting, looking cool.

But as the zone got deadlier, the rich kid cracked. Started cutting dead weight. Quietly ditched the injured and slow.

No dramatic betrayal. Just scared teenagers doing what scared teenagers do: survive.

James noticed Cole’s beasts next.

Glowbug? Former trash starter, now a respectable Tier-2 tank.

Giant Beast Mantis? Aura so oppressive it made the air feel heavy.

Even Marcus’s Flame Golden Retriever didn’t hit that hard.

James’s brain did the math subconsciously—and short-circuited.

He looked from the mantis’s cold, razor limbs… up to the guy calmly bandaging his leg.

That face. Wait… skinny Cole from class?

Pre-trial rumors: “That frail kid? Dead in five minutes.”

Reality: dual-wielding badass beasts, one of them a rare mantis. Moving like he owned the place.

James had been ditched with nothing. Cole was thriving.

Shock → disbelief → full-on awe.

“L-Let me come with you, Cole—Boss Cole! I’ll do chores, cook, scout, set camp—anything! Just don’t leave me!”

Cole paused. Save him or not?

Wilderness busywork ate hours. A helper could free up grind time.

Trial was five days—half gone already. He was sitting at roughly Tier-2 Lv5.

That Croc-Armored Tigerboss? Tier-2 Lv20. Still a mountain.

An extra pair of hands might tip the scales.

Cole nodded.

James whooped—nearly jumped, then winced hard on the bad leg.

Injury wasn’t fatal, just the leg. Reason Marcus cut him loose—big group, limited supplies, too many hurt.

Cole? Barely a scratch so far.

James turned into a chore machine. Chatterbox mode engaged, spilling Marcus-group gossip while limping after Cole.

Most of it useless drama.

But one nugget made Cole’s ears perk: Croc-Armored Tigerintel.

They’d seen it up close. Nearly pissed themselves.

“We’re pretty sure the zone glitch is tied to that monster. The cave it’s guarding glows weird at night—probably why all these stronger beasts keep showing up. Drawn to whatever’s inside.”

No other mobs dared approach. Tiger on guard duty.

A glowing cave pulling in elites? Screaming “hidden treasure” louder than a neon sign.

Cole’s pulse hammered. He was contracting that tiger, no matter what.

They set up a temp camp in a safer pocket of the swamp.

James went full butler mode—tent pitched fast, fire crackling, water boiling. Even swapped his cleaner spare shirt for Cole’s shredded rags.

“Boss Cole, just rest up. Grunt work’s on me.”

Grinning, eager, limping around like a loyal hype man.

Gotta admit—it felt pretty damn good.

Cole happily outsourced everything except actual hunting.

Came back to hot food waiting every time. Life on easy mode.

One rule: Cole hunted solo.

Official excuse: “Your leg’ll slow us down.”

Real reason: didn’t want a newbie watching him go full beast-mode.

As thanks for the hustle, Cole live-captured a solid Tier-1 beast and handed it over.

Fanged Rabbit.

Gentle temperament, balanced offense and defense—super popular newbie starter.

James stared at his new partner. Froze. Lips trembled. Eyes welled up.

He’d thought just surviving was the win.

Hid and shivered through every hunt with Marcus.

Now? His own beast. A good one.

Back in Marcus’s group, kids fought over scraps. Some girls practically threw themselves for a chance.

One day with Cole? Gifted a premium starter like it was nothing.

“B-Boss… this is too much… I can’t…”

“Take it,”Cole shrugged, casual as hell. Tier-1s were basically pocket change now. “Gives you some teeth. Means less babysitting for me.”

James nodded like his life depended on it. Worship levels: maxed.

“Boss Cole, I’m yours forever. Point anywhere—I go. No questions.”

Chest-thump, full loyalty oath.

Still benched for hunts, though.

Rocky riverbank. Target: Lv23 Iron Shell Crab sipping water, camo dialed to eleven.

“Glowbug—aggro.”

Glowbug dove low, tail flashing like a lure across the surface.

Crab lunged—iron pincer snapping for the bait.

But a green blur struck first.

SHRRK!

Extreme Shadow Slashcarved straight into a weak shell joint. One pincer severed clean.

Single-pincer crab? Combat power plummeted.

Cole didn’t even swing his club. Fight over. Core harvested, premium mats bagged.

Efficiency had become routine. Embarrassingly easy.

Real combat was forging Cole into something scary.

He pulled up the Pip-Boy panel for a quick beast roster check.

Two days blurred by. Five beasts locked in.

Five.

Glimmer Beetle (Glowbug)

【Tier: 2】

【Level: 5】

【Attribute: Wind】

【Species: Insect】

【Status: Healthy】

【Skills: Silver Armor (Passive)】

【Description: Evolved Glimmer Beetle. Top-tier defense, ultimate trusty sidekick.】

Steady progress. No forced crystal feeding, just natural hunt levels. Gave Cole solid buffs.

Giant Beast Mantis

【Tier: 1】

【Level: 25】

【Attribute: Metal】

【Species: Insect】

【Status: Healthy】

【Skills: Extreme Shadow Slash, Quick Flash (Passive)】

【Description: Ultra-aggressive rare mantis. Skill unlocks turned it into a DPS monster.】

Main grind machine. Lv25 was insane

Bonus: new passive Quick Flash. Dodge game on another level.

New recruits:

Steelback Turtle

【Tier: 2】

【Level: 15】

【Attribute: Water】

【Species: Turtle】

【Status: Healthy】

【Skills: Shell Shrink (Passive), Water Gun (Basic)】

【Description: Pro-level tank. The meatshield pros swear by.】

Beefiest wall in the squad. Captured fresh at Tier-2 Lv15. Raw defense rivaled Tier-2 Lv20+ easy. Offense? Meh, but who cares.

Sonic Bat

【Tier: 1】

【Level: 15】

【Attribute: Dark】

【Species: Bat】

【Status: Healthy】

【Skills: Sonic Vibration】

Annoying night pest—Glowbug flushed it out. Low tier, but that skill? Rare mental crowd control. Exactly what the team needed.

Spark Sparrow

【Tier: 1】

【Level: 32】

【Attribute: Fire】

【Species: Bird】

【Status: Healthy】

【Skills: Flame Burst】

Pain in the ass to catch. Specifically prepped as anti-tiger tech. Fire element wrecked certain matchups. Lv32 skill damage? Nasty nuke.

Solo against the Croc-Armored Tiger? Bird feed.

As squad support? Serious burn threat.

But the real trump card? Divine Resonance Cole. Strongest piece on the board by far.

Current power: solid Tier-2 Lv15 equivalent, stacked with multiple skills. Normal Tier-2 beasts would cry.

Still… going in now felt risky. Craved a few more levels.

Clock was merciless.

Five-day trial—almost up.

Forced teleport incoming any day now.

“No more grinding. Time to bag that Croc-Armored Tiger.”
