The Night Everything Changed

Chapter 1

Jericho's POV

The night started out like every other miserable night in Jericho Matthew’s life—tired, hungry, and surrounded by problems. He stood at the corner of the city’s quiet streets, waiting for the last bus that almost never came. His old backpack hung from one shoulder, half-zipped and stuffed with his cracked laptop, a few cheap clothes, and an empty lunch box.

The streetlights flickered, throwing dim light on the puddles scattered across the road. The smell of rain and dust mixed in the air. Somewhere in the distance, he could hear the hum of fancy cars heading toward the richer part of the city—the kind of world Jericho didn’t belong to.

He sighed, pulling his worn jacket closer around him. “Another day, another slap in the face,” he muttered.

Jericho was twenty-seven, a quiet man with big dreams buried under years of disappointment. He’d studied computer engineering, graduated with high hopes, and landed in a company that paid him just enough to survive. But survival wasn’t living—it was a slow punishment.

Every day, he faced people who saw him as nothing more than a tool. His boss, Mr. Douglas, treated him like trash; his co-workers laughed behind his back. Even the security guards spoke to him as if he were invisible.

But Jericho had learned to smile through it all.

That night, though, something felt different. He couldn’t explain it—it was like the air itself carried a strange pulse. His phone buzzed in his pocket, and he fished it out, expecting another unpaid bill reminder. Instead, the screen showed something else:

“System Update Complete. Congratulations, User Jericho Matthew.”

He frowned. “System update? I didn’t install anything.”

He tapped the notification, and his phone screen turned black. Then, a glowing symbol appeared—a silver ring spinning in endless motion.

Suddenly, lines of code flashed across the screen faster than his eyes could follow. Numbers, letters, symbols—it was as if someone had taken over his device.

“What the hell…” Jericho whispered, stepping back.

Before he could react, a robotic voice echoed softly through the speaker.

“Welcome, Jericho Matthew. Your account has been verified. Initialization: 0%. Estimated profit generation begins in 3… 2… 1…”

Jericho froze. “Profit generation? What kind of prank is this?”

He opened his laptop, heart pounding. The old machine took its time booting up, the fan whirring noisily. When the desktop finally appeared, the same glowing symbol from his phone showed on the laptop screen.

A loading bar filled up instantly.

System Activated.

Auto-Trading AI Protocol Online.

Initializing global finance access.

His laptop began displaying financial charts from all over the world, stocks, cryptocurrencies, commodities, everything was moving. And in the middle of the chaos, a single number appeared on the screen:

Account Balance: $0.00

Then, the number started changing.

$100… $5,000… $2,000,000… $50,000,000… $12,000,000,000…

Jericho’s jaw dropped. The digits climbed faster than his brain could process.

$200 billion. $700 billion. $5 trillion. $60 trillion. $200 trillion. $900 trillion.

He blinked hard, certain he was hallucinating.

“This can’t be real…” he whispered, clutching the sides of his laptop. His heart thudded painfully in his chest.

The robotic voice spoke again:

“Process complete. Account credited: Nine Hundred Trillion U.S. Dollars. AI investment protocol running at optimal capacity.”

Jericho’s mind went blank. For a moment, the whole world seemed to stop. The sound of the rain, the passing cars, even his own breathing—it all faded into silence.

He closed the laptop, opened it again, and checked the number once more. Still there. Nine hundred trillion.

“This… this has to be a dream.”

He slapped his own cheek. “Ow!”

Not a dream.

Jericho laughed nervously. “No way. No freaking way. This has to be a bug, a scam, or maybe I’ve gone crazy.”

The voice on his phone spoke again.

“Congratulations, Jericho Matthew. You are now the primary owner of the Universal Trade System. Please keep your device active for real-time global access.”

He stared at his phone in disbelief. “Universal what?”

The screen flashed again, showing live news reports, stock exchanges going wild, digital currencies spiking and crashing, countries freezing transactions. It was chaos. And in the middle of that chaos, his name appeared in one of the scrolling headlines:

“Unknown Account Disrupts Global Financial System—Untraceable Transactions Worth $900 Trillion Detected.”

Jericho’s knees nearly gave out.

“This… this is impossible!” he shouted, panic rising in his throat. “I didn’t do anything!”

He wanted to shut it all down, but no matter what key he pressed, the laptop refused to respond. The glowing symbol pulsed brighter, then faded, leaving behind one final message:

“You have been chosen.”

Jericho slammed the laptop shut, his hands shaking. “Chosen for what?”

The phone buzzed again, this time with an email notification. The subject line read:

“From: UTS Main Core

Subject: Your Journey Begins Now.”

He didn’t open it. He couldn’t. He was too terrified to even breathe properly.

He looked up at the empty street, the drizzle falling harder now. His reflection in a puddle looked like that of a stranger—a man on the edge of something far beyond his understanding.

“$900 trillion…” he whispered, almost laughing at the absurdity. “That’s more money than all the countries on Earth combined.”

He trudged home, trying to make sense of what just happened. His apartment was a cramped single room on the third floor of an old building. Paint peeled off the walls, and the flickering bulb above his bed gave off a weak yellow light.

He dropped his backpack and sat on the bed, still dazed.

“This can’t be real,” he said again, though a small voice in his head whispered, *What if it is?*

He opened the laptop again, half expecting everything to be gone—but it wasn’t. The balance was still there, glowing bright on the screen.

And beneath it, a new message had appeared:

“Do you wish to access your funds?”

 [Yes] [No]

Jericho stared at it. “No… this can’t be safe.”

But curiosity got the better of him. He clicked Yes.

The screen shifted, showing bank options from every country on the planet. He scrolled, confused, until he saw one that made him freeze, his own small local bank.

He hesitated for a long moment, then entered his account details, expecting an error. Instead, a new window appeared:

“Transaction complete. $10,000,000 transferred successfully.”

His phone pinged immediately. He opened his banking app and there it was. Ten million dollars.

Jericho nearly dropped the phone. “It’s real…” he whispered. “It’s really real.”

He stood up, pacing around his tiny room. Ten million dollars sitting in his account. And that was just the start.

A thousand thoughts flooded his mind—bills, debt, his sick mother, the years of struggle, all the nights he’d gone hungry just to save money for rent. He could fix it all. He could fix everything.

But another thought crept in right after: Who gave me this?

He looked back at the screen. The program was still running, lines of code moving endlessly.

“Do not be afraid,” the robotic voice said again, softer this time.

“The system chose you because you believed, even when no one else did.”

Jericho swallowed hard. “Believed in what?”

There was no answer. Just the hum of his laptop fan and the flickering of the screen.

He sat down slowly, staring at the glowing digits. For years, life had given him nothing but pain, betrayal, and humiliation. People mocked him for dreaming too big. His ex-girlfriend left him for someone richer. His father died believing Jericho would never amount to anything.

And now, in one night, the universe had flipped the script.

He opened his bank app again, still disbelieving, and touched the number just to make sure it wasn’t a trick.

“No more being broke,” he whispered, a shaky smile spreading across his face. “No more begging for respect. No more working for people who look down on me.”

The thought filled him with fire. For this time in his life, he felt powerful—truly powerful.

He didn’t sleep that night. His mind was alive with plans, ideas, and a touch of fear.

By dawn, Jericho was standing by the window, watching the sunrise spread over the city skyline. The streets below were starting to come alive, people hurrying to work, horns honking, buses groaning down the road.

And up here, in a small, shabby apartment, the richest man alive stood barefoot by the glass, his heart pounding with a mix of excitement and disbelief.

He didn’t know what the “Universal Trade System” really was. He didn’t know who built it, or why it had chosen him. But one thing was clear—his life would never be the same again.

Jericho took a deep breath, gripping the edge of the window frame as the first light hit his face.

“Whatever this is,” he murmured, “I’m not wasting it.”

Behind him, the laptop screen blinked again, showing one last message before fading to black:

“Welcome to your new world, Jericho Matthew. Phase Two begins soon.”

Jericho turned slowly, the glow reflecting in his eyes.

He didn’t know what “Phase Two” meant, but deep down, he could feel it.
