Chapter 57

The frozen moment in time shattered.

The roaring wind returned with a vengeance. The dying Harvester monolith crashed into the Mediterranean Sea ten miles offshore, sending a massive, three-hundred-foot tidal wave racing toward the island of San Marcos.

Arthur didn't even look at the incoming tsunami. He tossed the fading, useless shaft of the Spear of Genesis aside. The magnetic casing dissolved into violet dust before it hit the marble balcony.

"Vera! Hyperion!" Arthur shouted.

Before the tidal wave could strike the newly rebuilt capital, Hyperion shot down from the stratosphere. The plasma-wrapped Vanguard positioned himself directly between the city and the ocean. He didn't build a wall; he simply unleashed a localized burst of thermal radiation.

The three-hundred-foot wall of seawater slammed into the thermal barrier and instantly flash-boiled into steam. A dense, blinding fog blanketed the coastline, but the city was saved.

Arthur turned back into the ruined boardroom.

Serena and Victoria were coughing in the thick steam rolling in through the shattered balcony. Nyx was furiously typing, her laptop screen entirely red.

"Boss!" Nyx shrieked, panic lacing her voice. "The System interface! It's locking me out! The orbital ledger is encrypting itself with a code I can't read!"

Arthur’s heart hammered against his ribs. The ancient voice in his head hadn't been making an idle threat. We are the creditors. The debt is now due.

He had taken a ten-million-point loan from the Void Market, collateralizing the Earth's molten core. He had assumed he would have time to conquer the remnants of the Old Families, liquidate their physical assets, and pay off the debt. He had assumed the cosmic economy worked like terrestrial banking.

He was wrong.

Ding.

The blue interface in his vision suddenly shifted to a harsh, blinding crimson.

[WARNING: VOID LEDGER AUDIT INITIATED.]

[The Creditors (The Architects) have initiated an immediate margin call on Host 410's account.]

[Current Balance: 0 SP.]

[Required Payment: 10,000,000 SP + 20% Void Interest.]

[Time Remaining: 60 Seconds.]

"Sixty seconds?" Arthur whispered, the blood draining from his face. "They're calling the loan immediately? That's impossible to pay!"

[Failure to produce 12,000,000 SP will result in the immediate forfeiture of collateral. Initiating Core Extraction Protocol.]

The floor beneath Arthur’s feet began to vibrate. It wasn't the impact of the falling ship. It was a deep, tectonic shudder originating from miles beneath the Earth’s crust. The planet itself was groaning.

"Arthur, what is happening?!" Victoria screamed, grabbing the edge of the glass table as the room shook violently.

"They’re collecting the debt," Arthur said, his golden eyes wide with a terrifying realization. "They aren't going to fight us. They're going to legally repossess the planet's core."

"Can you stop them?" Serena asked, her voice trembling.

"I need twelve million System Points," Arthur said rapidly, pacing the ruined floor. "I need liquidity. Right now!"

"Boss, you own everything!" Nyx cried out, frantically swiping through her monitors. "You own the globe! Liquidate it all! Sell the European ports! Sell the Asian manufacturing hubs!"

"It doesn't work!" Arthur snapped, his mind racing. "Earthly assets have zero value on the Void Market! The System only recognizes cosmic capital, or wealth generated through active subjugation!"

The tectonic shudder intensified. Outside, the smart-pavement of the capital plaza cracked open. A massive, glowing fissure of raw, molten magma tore through the center of the city. The Architects were literally cracking the planet like an egg to extract the core.

[Time Remaining: 45 Seconds.]

Arthur closed his eyes. He blocked out the screaming wind, the shaking floor, and the terrified voices of his inner circle. He needed an angle. A loophole. He was the greatest corporate raider in human history. He didn't just accept defeat. He found the blind spot in the contract.

System, Arthur thought with absolute, laser-focused precision. I cannot sell earthly dirt to pay a cosmic debt. But I own assets that are not of this earth. I own Level 5 hardware.

He opened his eyes. He looked at the smoking, ruined hull of the alien monolith sinking into the Mediterranean Sea.

Can I scrap the Harvester ship?

[Assessing Extraterrestrial Asset...]

[Target: Destroyed Class-4 Harvester Vessel.]

[Asset belongs to the Creditors (The Architects). Host 410 does not hold the title. Sale denied.]

Arthur cursed under his breath. The ship was a rental.

[Time Remaining: 30 Seconds.]

The magma fissure in the plaza widened, swallowing the grand fountain. The air temperature in the city spiked drastically.

"Master," Vera said softly.

Arthur turned. The white-haired assassin wasn't looking at the destruction outside. She was looking at him. Her crimson eyes were completely calm.

"Vera, I need a solution, not a bodyguard right now," Arthur said tightly.

"I am the solution," Vera replied, taking a step toward him. She unclasped her combat blade and laid it gently on the cracked glass table. She looked at Nyx, who was frantically typing.

"Nyx," Vera said. "What is my market value?"

Nyx froze. Her hands hovered over the keyboard. She looked at the assassin, her neon-green eyes widening in horrific realization. "Vera... no. You’re a Vanguard. You're bound to the Host."

"I am an asset purchased with System Points," Vera corrected smoothly. She turned her gaze back to Arthur. "Master Vance. You bought me. You upgraded me. I am Apex-Tier physical hardware. If you sell me back to the System... you will have your capital."

Arthur stared at her. The words felt like physical blows to his chest. "Sell you? You're talking about un-summoning yourself. You would be deleted."

"I am an investment, Arthur," Vera smiled a rare, genuine expression that reached her crimson eyes. "And investments are meant to be liquidated to save the portfolio. You must protect the empire."

[Time Remaining: 15 Seconds.]

"I won't do it," Arthur growled, stepping toward her. He reached out to grab her shoulders. "You are my shadow. I don't sell my own people!"

"You don't have a choice!" Victoria screamed, pointing at the window. The entire horizon was glowing bright orange. The oceans were beginning to boil as the Earth’s mantle fractured. "Arthur, the planet is cracking! If you don't pay the debt, we all burn!"

Arthur looked at the apocalyptic destruction outside. Then he looked back at Vera.

She offered a perfect, elegant bow. "It has been an honor to serve the Sovereign."

Arthur’s chest tightened. He had spent his entire life being treated as disposable capital by his ex-wife and the billionaire class. He swore he would never be like them. But right now, standing at the edge of the abyss, the System demanded a sacrifice.

He didn't want to do it. But he was the King of Earth, and Kings have to make terrible choices.

System, Arthur commanded, his mental voice cracking. Initiate Vanguard Liquidation Protocol.
