Chapter 7: Goodbye Julianna

The door clicked behind Kane. A quiet goodbye to the world he once thought they had together and to every unfinished dreams.

The crisp evening breeze touched his face and it felt like something new.

The night was dark as usual, the breeze blew across the evening with its usual rhythm and the conversations from passersby and laughter echoed around him, but something inside of him had changed. Strangely, he didn't feel attached or angry because Julianna had cheated on him. He only felt disappointed because the woman he thought was his forever was a heartless betrayal, a cruel gold digger who threw his small effort in the dust.

In the past, Kane would have gone back even when she was the one guilty. He would always go back to kiss her toe, pleading with her over purchasing an outdated brand of expensive necklace— the one he could afford.

"What in the world did you buy, Kane," She would hold the jewelry between two fingers and shake like it were something insignificant. Then exhale like she was driving away the smell of something pungent. "God! My friends are getting the latest one. Do you expect me to put this trash around my neck and go all the way out?!"

She could hurl the jewelry across the room and walk over it angrily.

Julianna didn't care about his small pocket. What she cared about was her extravagance lifestyle.

The sweats he poured during every odd job, the empty stomach he kept for two days straight just so he could get her jewelry— a cheaper one to meet her deadline, she doesn't see all of it— She didn't appreciate any bit of it.

Kane actually laughed sharply, shaking his head.

"I can't believe I have been a fool for a woman who didn't even deserve a piece of my heart." He muttered as he walked along the curb, blending with the passersby.

The ring that earlier felt like it meant the entire world now felt useless.

And the jewelry? It weighed like a commodity for a whore. A fine piece of art for a betrayal. A filth like her didn't deserve any of it.

Reaching a roadside bench, he gently sat down.

Across the street, at an open space amusement park were families gathered in groups, having fun, chatting happily and laughing so hard like nothing else in the entire world mattered to them.

Kane smiled faintly watching fireworks shoot into the sky and blast then rain down colours. Since he was a kid, he thought old Evelyn was the only family he had, the woman who raised him like her own kid. She cared for him properly, and never for once had he felt lonely.

But when she died, everything changed.

Old Evelyn's had no family. The orphanage took him in when he was just seven and that was where he lived till he was fifteen. Kane raised funds for college, he struggled, suffered and bled just to make himself useful and build a future for himself.

He met Julianna when they were in college. It all started from solving her assignment. Julianna was a block head with expensive Peruke.

When Kane saw her for the first time, he was head over heel with her. Julianna didn't give him attention until she had trouble with math. She's been failing it for two sessions.

One assignment led to consistent private tutor sessions, then attachment slowly grew between them.

Kane thought he had seen someone to spend his entire life with, so he took the bold step to propose to her during one of the tutoring sessions.

Remembering everything now, he clearly understood the look on her face that day. She was just surprised— not happy, and she had probably accepted to date him because he was going to keep disturbing her.

He thought she was the only family he had, but it turns out she was just playing him, eating his little efforts for her and lamenting about the cheapness.

Soon, she would regret her decision when she finds out the man he became the moment he got fired and got cheated on,

and Badmus Kent, his cruel former boss and the man he chose won't be there to save her when everything crumbles around her.
