Chapter 6: Walking away

Kane laughed— a sharp and bitter crackle shaking his lips visibly.

"Stagnant?" He repeated with disbelief in his tone, his expression twisted with disappointment. "You could call me that now? After everything I did for you?"

The ring in his pocket burnt at the reminder that this same woman was the one he planned all his day to propose to.

He wasn't the kind to speak about things he'd done for someone. He's selfless. But he won't allow the ingrate to make it look like being in his life was doing him a favor.

"I paid for your bills! Who was it who took you and your friends out at Starlight resort? Who was it when you couldn't stand up from the bed when malaria got you down? Who moved your momma's properties, rented a new apartment for her and got her things into the new apartment? It was me. Nobody. So, before you open your mouth to speak, always think first you slut!"

Kane spat.

Something flashed across her eyes as Kane finished. It was a cringe emotion, like she was uncomfortable mentioning those things now mixed with anger. Slut.

Her hand swept through the air to connect with Kane's face. He caught her hand mid-air, wrapped his fingers around her wrist in firm grip, he closed the gap one step, looming over her like a shadow with steel in his eyes. "Don't you ever. Ever dare to raise your hands at me. Again." His voice was low, threatening.

He shoved her back.

Julianna caught herself against the wall, breathing fast. The steel in Kane's eyes earlier stayed in her head like ink on skin. She'd never seen him look like that before. The Kane she knew was always soft. Even when she was troubling, he was always calm, speaking to her with something that she pretended to have for him too. Love.

"Because you did all that doesn't mean make you Worthy!" She lashed out. "I never forced you! And anyone could have done those pretty things you do!"

"Badmus has promised me the life you can't afford— not even in your dreams!" She dashed to her wardrobe, yanked the first compartment out with urgency and pulled out a gold necklace, shaking it fast the embodiment jangled, gold stone shaking under the light. Her shoulder swelled with pride as the necklace caught the light. "He got me this just today. $30,000 neckpiece on a Tuesday! What did you get me on my birthday?"

A cruel mocking laughter cackled from her throat.

"A cheap cake! Second hand phone! Jezz!! I was a fool accepting someone of your status into my life!"

Kane took two steps backward. His expression was plastered with only disappointment now, the anger in his chest flattening, seeing the woman he did everything for at his lowest mock his effort.

"I understand." He simply said, voice calm, disappointing, detached. "you'll come to regret this."

With that, he turned towards the door and walked out while Julianna continued to lash out behind him.

"You're the one who'll regret it!" She spat, her voice shaking the roof, "rot in hell you maggot! You'll come here begging for a space to sleep, I'll kick your ass out, you ingrate!!"

That was the only thing she did in the relationship. The house rent. And it was paid for by Badmus Kent.

The door clicked shut behind Kane, a quiet goodbye to the world behind him.
