The realisation knocked the air out of Jax's throat. His mind went blank, but then he fixed his gaze back on the team and recollected himself.

In the end, he needed to be strong for them. He could not allow his emotions to crush him down again. He only wished Forge had listened. Now, they had to move on. There were little NPCs they still needed to save.

Just as Jax wanted to gather everyone, he caught Zephyr moving towards the door again, and Jax sped him out of there.

"Don't do it." Jax warned

The team had moved away from where the fire burned the forest and back into a pitch black night, where the sky was shielded by the canopy structure of the woods.Orin aided with the fire as usual without even being told. He and Eldric walked in the front while Forge wrapped his arms over his chest, the cold seeping into his skin as he walked next to the NPC they had just saved.Jax, on the other hand, did not feel the cold as much as the others. Vortex Core kept him warm. A few minutes ago, he pulled Mira close, one shoulder draped over her and passed the core into her. It heated her up from the inside, taking the cold away from her."Are we going to talk about how you've been frowning for 20 minutes?"That was how long they had been walking and Mira's calculating mind had been keeping watch.Jax rolled his eyes, a little groan emitting from inside his throat."When you do that, it means there's something on your mind."However, Jax did not say a word. His lips were pressed thin, his

  • CH.121: Monsters Targeting NPCs

The sound of flesh squelching reached Jax's hearing even before he got close. A broken branch of tree sat in the distance and he slid past the floor, skin digging into the mud and dirt but he did not care for much. His eyes fixated on the scene ahead where the night had everything blocked with darkness. Behind him, his friends had settled. Forge, Mira, Orin, and Eldric crouched just like Jax and hid themselves behind the branch. Each of them had prepared their systems for whatever might happen that night. In case things went heated. The screams had reduced into low shrieks. Immediately, Jax activated System Sight and began to scan the area. His gaze fixated on the NPC whose crawling led her to leaning against one of the tall trees. Pixel of blood could be scanned all over her face but Jax could tell that it was not hers. And that was when he shifted his focus to the ground and caught three fallen NPCs. They were freshly terminated, their bodies not yet dispersed into pixel. These were

Jax placed his hands back into his pockets and in no time, his thought process deepened again. He remembered when he left Lumora all of a sudden. For someone who was even mistreated there, eventually he had to go back. He had to go back to Lumora just to face all that he had passed through for him to get better.Though the game didn't treat NPCs as though they were worth more, the ones who were self-aware had developed some sort of emotional sensation and Jax was aware of this.It was why he hoped Forge wouldn't develop the same confusion he did. He had just become a Watcher and he was leaving too quickly. But Jax decided to trust him.If anything, he knew by now how stubborn Forge could be. Just like Kade.Jax grinned, white teeth flashing and catching the glint from the bright artificial light that shone down in rays from in-between the fluffy clouds."Ah, I guess the smiley face is a texture imprinted on everyone now. Even you

  • CH.119: Renewed Hope

More than two weeks had been spent in the small town, and the NPCs continued to show Jax and his team how resilient they were.Their strong willingness not to falter remained a shock to Jax and his team as it was rare to see NPCs act that way. The game had always made them fidget or scared away at any little inconvenience. Much less something as huge as what happened to them, but this little town had proved they could pass through anything and survive it.This was what motivated Jax to stay and even learn more.As the artificial sun burned bright in the sky, the little town was much better. The first day was spent destroying all the facilities the witch Coven built. The town celebrated it by building a bonfire night where they cheered. Forge was given the accolades because he had now learned how to use his powers appropriately. He crushed the building to the foundation and made it sink all the way down to the bottom of the ocean. When it was time to rebuild the town's structure beca

  • CH.118: Face the Coven

The team arrived at the facility. From afar, they had prepared themselves. Each character with their powers charged to the maximum. They expected to be ambushed, to have the witches crash into them any moment but none of that happened.Jax, most of all, was bewildered. He had faced two members of the Coven and he knew they were not the type who wouldn't have the security measure to know invaders were on their territory. However, the team moved in hushed paces and as they passed the arms where no weapons were shoved in their faces, the plans changed.Jax gestured with a flip of his fingers. Though Eldric, Mira, and Orin stayed back, Jax and Forge had other expectations. They got inside the facility, the pendant pulsing against their character data. Jax felt the system close to the completion of the synchronisation and he set the update to automatic.Cold air carried dread as they met silence and no armies waiting for them. Machines ran codes but there was no other entity there. Activat

Zephyr appeared from behind the group as they stood at the shore of the ocean. The plan was still being discussed on how to defeat the Coven and they did not even notice when he closed in on them."Need a ship, Watcher?" Zephyr said as he kicked his foot against the sand.Forge turned, saw him, and hugged him tightly. "I'm glad you were not hurt.""Yes, it's all been about survival, you know." Zephyr said and Forge nodded, understanding what he meant. "The Elder is gone and we couldn't even prepare a proper funeral to respect her departure.""I'm sorry." Forge muttered, as he head fell to his feet. The feeling of failure still lunged at his chest even when he'd told himself countless times there was nothing he could have done to prevent it."No, don't be. We must punish the Coven. It's just not about making them leave us alone. They will always come back." Zephyr looked at everyone, one after the other. "We have to cut them off totally. Terminate them like they did us.""They work for
