The metal door screeched, buckling under a colossal weight, but Leila didn't flinch. She just tilted her head, her nostrils flaring as she caught the scent of the rotting hoard pressing against the steel.
"Leila, get away from the door," Zaid shouted, grabbing his empty canister. "They’re not just ghouls anymore. They’re hive-linked."
Leila turned, her eyes glowing with a faint, violet luminescence. She lunged, not at the door, but at him. Her fingers, tipped with newly hardened keratin, raked across his chest, shredding his shirt.
"Leila, stop!" Zaid caught her wrists, his boots sliding against the slick floor. "You’re off your leash!"
"I’m starving, Zaid," she hissed, her voice vibrating with a primal, metallic rasp. "The air tastes like decay. I need to break them open."
"You need to stabilize," Zaid countered, his voice steadying despite the frantic thudding of his heart. He twisted her arms, pinning her back against the cool stone wall. "If you hunt them now, you’ll burn out your core."
"Does it look like I care?" She bucked her hips, slamming him against the wall. Her skin felt like burning silk, a heat that made his pulse race in dark, illicit ways. "I feel… infinite."
"You feel unstable," he growled, pinning her further. "Your heart is jackal, Leila. It doesn’t know when to quit, and it will chew through your ribs if I don't give you the sedative."
"Then give it to me," she purred, her lips brushing against his pulse point. Her teeth grazed his throat, a sharp, teasing promise of violence. "Feed me, Zaid."
"I don't have it," he lied, his hand sliding down to her waist, feeling the violent, rhythmic twitching of her new musculature. "And I’m not giving you a drop until you look at me and remember who you are."
Leila shoved him away, the force sending him tumbling over a crate. She stood in the center of the room, her chest heaving, the violet light under her skin pulsing in time with the thuds against the door.
"You think you’re in control?" she asked, her voice dripping with mockery. "I can smell your sweat, Zaid. You’re terrified of what you made."
"I’m not terrified," Zaid stood up, dusting off his apron. "I’m prepared. You’re a masterpiece, Leila, but every engine needs a regulator."
"Is that all I am? An engine?" She paced the room, her movements predatory and fluid, like a desert cat stalking its prey. "Look at me. Look at what you did to my skin."
"I saved you," he retorted, locking eyes with her.
"You branded me," she countered. "I can feel the ink—or whatever this is—crawling under my skin. It’s cold. It hurts."
"It’s the stabilizer," Zaid lied again, his hand hovering over a hidden lever behind the workbench. "It’s connecting to your nervous system. If you stop moving, the pain fades."
"Liar," she lunged again, but this time, he was ready.
He triggered the vent, releasing a thick, amber-hued gas into the room. Leila stumbled, her knees hitting the floor with a heavy thud. She clawed at her throat, gasping as the gas took hold, forcing her unnatural heart rate to plummet.
"Zaid… why?" she groaned, her gaze losing its predatory edge, replaced by a hazy, desperate dependence.
He walked over to her, his shadow falling long and dark across her shaking frame. He knelt, lifting her chin with his thumb. Her pupils were dilated, unfocused, and agonizingly beautiful.
"Because you were trying to kill me, Leila," he whispered, his voice smooth and intoxicating. "And I can’t have my favorite patient dying of exhaustion."
"I wasn’t... I was trying to protect..." Her voice trailed off, her body slackening.
"Protect yourself from what? The hunger?" He brushed a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "You don't need to hunt. You just need to listen to me."
"It’s so loud," she whispered, leaning into his palm. "The city... the ghosts... they’re screaming."
"Focus on my voice," he commanded, his thumb tracing the line of her jaw, moving lower toward the hollow of her throat. "Everything else is noise. Just me."
"Just you," she repeated, her voice turning soft, compliant. "Zaid, it hurts."
"I know. That’s the graft settling." He felt the muscles in her neck ripple beneath his touch, responding to his presence like a reflex. "Tell me you're mine, Leila. Tell me you only move when I tell you to."
She shivered, her back arching, her entire form warping, growing tighter and more refined as she leaned into his authority. "I’m... yours. Only yours."
"Good girl." He leaned in close, his breath ghosting over her lips. "The door is holding for now. We have time."
"What are we going to do?" she asked, her eyes fluttering shut.
"We’re going to survive," he said, his hand sliding down to the nape of her neck. He pulled her hair aside to examine the site where the jackal tissue had fully integrated with her spine.
He stopped mid-breath.
There, etched in charcoal-black lines against her pale, fever-flushed skin, was a shifting, geometric shape. It pulsed with a faint, necrotic light, crawling across her shoulder blades like a living thing.
"Zaid?" she muttered, sensing his sudden tension. "What’s wrong?"
"Nothing," he whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs.
The shape was undeniable. It was the icon of Anubis—the jackal-headed god of the embalmers, the guardian of the scales. It wasn't just a byproduct of the graft; it was a mark of ownership from something far older, and far hungrier, than anything he had brewed in his vats.
"You look scared," she murmured, a trace of her predatory grin returning, even in her weakened state. "Is it something I’ve done?"
"It’s something we’ve awakened," Zaid breathed, tracing the edge of the dark, ink-like tattoo. It felt ice-cold against his fingers, contrasting violently with her fevered skin.
A sharp, rhythmic tapping started on the ceiling—not the heavy, mindless thumping of the ghouls, but a calculated, deliberate series of clicks.
Leila’s eyes snapped open, glowing with a new, terrifying intelligence.
"They aren't here for the food, Zaid," she whispered, her voice chillingly calm. "They’re here for the god-mark."
The room’s remaining lights flickered and died, leaving them in the suffocating dark of the sanctuary. Outside, the silence that followed was far worse than the screaming.

The stone beneath Zaid’s knees turned to cooling, serrated glass. The tectonic voice that had claimed him as "Set" still vibrated in his teeth, but the immediate pressure receded, leaving him gasping for air that tasted like ionized dust."Zaid? Talk to me. Chapter 9: The Zero Patient
Leila stood before Zaid, her blade of solidified shadow humming with a frequency that rattled his teeth. She was a statue of ivory and light, a vessel for something that had existed long before the city was built."Leila, stop it. You’re scaring me," Zaid said, his voice straining against the unnatural pressure in the room."I am not her," she replied, her voice a chorus of hollow whispers. "The vessel has been repurposed.""Repurposed? What are you talking about? Look at me—I’m Zaid. I’m the one who stitched your soul back together!""You were the architect of the cage. Now, the bird has left the wire."Mara stepped forward, leveling her rifle. "Zaid, get out of the way! She’s not pulling her punches!""Don’t you dare touch her, Mara!" Zaid shouted, his hand gripping the hilt of his own blade so hard his knuckles turned white."She’s about to gut you, boss!" Jax added, his boots scrambling on the slick, glowing floor. "Look at her eyes! There’s nothing human behind that glare.""She’
Chapter 8: Descent into the Giza Plateau
The dust didn't settle; it hung in the air like pulverized bone. Zaid stood amidst the wreckage of the Grand Plaza, his lungs burning. Above, the building hung suspended, a dying star bleeding gold light, and Leila was gone."Zaid, we have to move," Mara gasped, her face streaked with soot and blood. "The soldiers are already crossing the perimeter. If we stay, we’re target practice."Zaid didn't look back at the floating debris. He wiped the copper taste of blood from his lip. "You’re right. We head for the old service tunnels. That’s the only way out of the grid.""The service tunnels? Those are flooded with waste and who knows what else from the lower strata," Kael’s replacement, a gaunt man named Jax, wheezed. "It’s suicide.""Everything is suicide today, Jax," Zaid snapped, his voice tight. "You want to stand here and wait for Iskander to finish us, or do you want to keep breathing?""Lead the way, boss. Just make it quick," Mara said, grabbing her gear. They scrambled into a rus

Chapter 6: The First Divine Vision
The voice reverberated through Zaid’s skull like a tectonic shift, a low-frequency hum that turned his internal organs into lead. The darkness in the alley deepened, sucking the oxygen from the air."Zaid? Did you hear that? Please tell me you heard that," Leila whispered. Her voice was thin, brittle, like glass about to shatter.Zaid gripped her arm, his knuckles white. "I heard it. It’s not just a signal. It’s an awakening.""My head," she groaned, clutching her temples. "The mark. It’s burning. It’s like liquid fire is pouring into my brain.""Don't fight it. If you fight it, it will tear you apart.""Too late for that. Look at the wall!"The blood-ink on the bricks surged, coalescing into a swirling, jagged silhouette of a jackal-headed entity. The air grew cold, a frost spreading across the wet pavement."Get back," Zaid barked, shoving her behind his frame. "Something is coming through the threshold.""It’s not just coming, Zaid. Chapter 5: Blood and Betrayal
The hand emerging from the smoldering ruins of the Grand Plaza Hotel was a grotesque claw of shifting, charcoal-colored sludge. Zaid didn’t wait to see the rest of Iskander pull himself free. He grabbed Leila’s wrist, his grip bruising, and dragged her into the labyrinth of the back alleys."He’s still moving, Zaid! You saw that, right?" Leila hissed, her breath ragged. She stumbled, her boots skidding on a slick of industrial grease."I saw. Don't look back. Keep your eyes on the path," Zaid snapped, his pulse hammering in his ears."We just blew up an entire wing! Nothing is supposed to survive that, not even a General with a bad case of the scales.""He isn't human anymore, Leila. Neither are you. Remember that."They reached the edge of the Industrial District, where the steam pipes bled gray fog into the night. Huddled in the shadow of a rusted water tower were two figures: Kael and Mara, the only survivors of Zaid’s fringe cell. Kael looked like he hadn't slept in a week; his ey
