1906. The wedding night.
The blade was cold.
Alaric noticed that first. Not the pain. Not the blood soaking through his white wedding shirt. Only the cold, spreading from the center of his chest like winter water.
Silver.
He looked down. A dagger with a black moon carved into its hilt was buried in his heart, and the hand holding it was small, pale, and trembling.
He knew that hand. He had kissed it three hours ago, in front of every pack and every clan, while the whole supernatural world bowed to them. He had promised that hand forever.
He lifted his eyes. Silver hair. A crimson gown. The face he loved more than his own life.
"Selene," he whispered.
Her eyes were empty. No hatred. No tears. Nothing.
Behind her, a woman in a servant's dress stepped out of the shadows and smiled.
The Golden Alpha, the strongest being of his age, fell to his knees on his wedding night. The last thing he felt was his bride's hand still on the blade.

Present day.
"Champagne, Cole. Now. And smile, for God's sake."
Mr. Graves, the head butler of Hale Estate, shoved a silver tray into Ethan's hands and pushed him toward the ballroom doors.
Ethan smiled. He had been smiling at these people since he was six years old.
That was the year his father became Victoria Hale's private driver, and the year the Cole family moved into the little staff cottage behind the estate's rose garden. His mother ran the household. His father drove the most powerful woman in the country to board meetings and galas. And Ethan carried trays, polished silver, and learned the first rule of working for the wolves.
Humans who knew their secret existed for one reason only: to serve them.
His phone buzzed in his pocket as he walked.
St. Mary's Hospital: FINAL NOTICE. Outstanding balance for patient Grace Cole: $18,430. Treatment will be suspended in 7 days.
Eighteen thousand dollars. The estate paid him minimum wage. His night job delivering takeout paid forty on a good night.
A second message.
Lily: Did you eat today? Don't lie. Mom asked about you.
Ethan: Ate like a king. Tell her I'll visit tomorrow.
He hadn't eaten since yesterday morning. But his little sister was fourteen and already worried too much.

The ballroom glittered. Tonight, Victoria Hale was hosting Derek Reed's twenty-first birthday as a personal gift to his father, Alpha Marcus Reed, her oldest business ally. A hundred werewolves from the Silver Creek Pack filled the room in designer suits and silk dresses, their laughter loud, their eyes flashing amber whenever they wanted to remind someone what they were.
And one ordinary human carrying their champagne.
"Well, well. Look who's on duty."
The conversations nearby died.
Derek Reed leaned against a marble pillar, whiskey in hand, his friends gathered behind him. Golden-haired, tall, handsome in the way money and a strong wolf made a person handsome.
"Ethan Cole," he said loudly. "Everyone, you remember Ethan. Mrs. Hale's pet human. His daddy drove her car, his mommy scrubbed her floors, and now he serves our drinks. Three generations of loyal dogs." He grinned. "Well. Two. The dad didn't last."
Someone whistled. Someone laughed.
Derek lifted a flute from Ethan's tray, looked at it, and poured the champagne onto Ethan's shoes.
"Oops. Clean that up. On your knees. With your shirt."
"No," Ethan said.
Derek's smile didn't move, but his eyes did. "What did you say?"
"I serve drinks. I'm not your servant."
Derek pulled out his phone and dialed without looking away.
"Mr. Patel? Derek Reed. One of your delivery boys just insulted me." A pause. "Yes. Ethan Cole. I'd consider it a personal favor."
Three seconds later, Ethan's phone buzzed.
Swift Delivery: Your contract has been terminated effective immediately.
His night job. Gone. Just like that.
"Is there a problem, Derek?"
The crowd parted.
Victoria Hale walked toward them in a gown of pale gold, Marcus Reed at her side. She looked thirty-five. She had looked thirty-five for as long as Ethan could remember, which no one at the estate ever talked about. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, and the most frightening, and in fourteen years she had spoken to him exactly three times.
Her head of security was nowhere in sight, which was normal. Ms. Vale never came to parties at the estate. In fourteen years, Ethan had only ever glimpsed her from a distance: a tall, pale figure in dark glasses at the far end of a hallway, gone before he could look twice.
"No problem, Mrs. Hale," Derek said sweetly. "Your help is just a little rude tonight."
Victoria's gaze moved over Ethan the way it moved over furniture.
"Ethan, isn't it?" she said. "Grace's boy."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Your mother's treatment at St. Mary's is paid for by my staff program." Her voice was warm, almost kind. "Such an expensive heart. It would be a shame if the program decided she was no longer staff."
The words were soft. The threat was not.
Beside her, Marcus Reed looked at Ethan for exactly one second. It was the look you gave a stain.
"My son's birthday has been interrupted," the Alpha said coldly. "I'll be speaking to your household office in the morning, Victoria. Perhaps they could teach their staff some respect."
"Of course, Marcus." Victoria smiled at him. "Whatever you need."
Ethan understood perfectly. Two of the most powerful people in the city had just decided his family's future over a spilled glass of champagne, and neither of them had needed to raise their voice.
As she turned away, the hem of her gown brushed past him, and for one strange second Ethan felt something he couldn't explain. A cold ache in the center of his chest, sharp and sudden, like the memory of a blade.
Then it was gone, and Victoria was gone, and Derek was pointing at the floor.
"You heard the lady."
Ethan looked at the spilled champagne. He thought of his mother's hospital bed.
Slowly, with every eye in the ballroom on him, he took off his jacket, knelt, and wiped the floor clean.
Bianca Hart, Derek's girlfriend, laughed behind her hand. The phones came out. Someone said, this is going viral.
When he stood, his face was burning.
"You see?" Derek said softly. "That's the difference between us." He leaned closer. "Your father died driving her car on an icy road, you know. Weak. Breakable. That's all humans are. Just like you."
Ethan's fists clenched. "Don't talk about my father."
"Or what? Go ahead. Swing."
Every cell in his body wanted to. But he thought of Lily, alone, if he ended up in jail.
He opened his fists and turned away.
A glass shattered against the back of his head. Whiskey and blood ran down his neck, and the ballroom exploded with laughter.

Outside, his phone rang. Toby, his best friend, an Omega werewolf and the only wolf in Silver Creek who had ever treated a human like a person.
"Dude, someone posted a video. Are you okay?"
"I just lost my night job."
"Listen. Don't go out the back gate." Toby's voice dropped. "Derek's guys are in the group chat. They're bored. They want some real fun tonight. Ethan, they're talking about you."
Ethan looked up.
At the end of the service road behind the garden wall, five figures stepped out from the shadows. Five pairs of amber eyes glowed in the dark.
In the middle, still holding his whiskey, was Derek Reed.
"Toby," Ethan said quietly. "If I don't call you back tonight, look after Lily."
He hung up.
Ethan's mind raced. He could run, but werewolves were three times faster than any human. He could scream, but the string quartet in the ballroom would drown him out, and no one inside would come running for the help anyway.
Behind him, two estate guards pulled the iron gate shut and stood watching, arms folded, grinning. At Hale Estate, no one ever helped a human.
Derek tilted his head toward the dark alley that ran along the wall.
"Let's take a walk, Cole."
No claws. No wolf. No money. No job. Just an ordinary human against five monsters.
And one thought, cold and sharp as a blade.
I'm going to die tonight.

The uniform still smelled like his father.Ethan found it in the back of the estate's uniform closet on Monday morning, hanging in a plastic bag with a faded name tag pinned to the chest: D. COLE. Darkness.Ethan kept his eyes shut and listened. He heard the whistle of claws cutting through the air toward his throat. Chapter 13: Fight Night
The Pit had never been this full.Five hundred werewolves packed the old rail tunnel, standing on crates, hanging from the rusted support beams, pressed so tightly against the cage that the chain-link bowed inward. The air was hot and thick with sweat and beer and the electric smell of wolves on the edge of shifting. Someone had hung a banner from the ceiling, painted in red: REED vs. THE HUMAN.Betting slips fluttered everywhere. The odds on the board read DEREK REED 1:8. Chapter 12: Redline
Selene. The vial was the color of fresh blood. It sat in a padded steel case on Victoria's desk, glowing faintly under the lamp. A label on the side read REDLINE — PROTOTYPE 7 — HALE BIOSCIENCES."Isn't it pretty?" Victoria said.Selene stood by the window, hands folded behind her back. "What does it do?""For about ten minutes, it makes a wolf three times stronger than he has any right to be. Faster. Angrier. Pain stops meaning anything." Victoria lifted the vial and turned it in the light. "After ten minutes, the heart usually gives out. We're still working on that part.""And you're giving it to Derek Reed.""Marcus asked very nicely." Victoria smiled. "He's terrified his son will lose to a human in front of the whole city. It would be the end of the Reed name. So I offered him a little help."Selene kept her voice perfectly flat. "You bet against Derek.""I did." Victoria set the vial back in the case and closed the lid with a soft click. "And I'll probably lose. Unless the Cole b

Four days until the fight."Cole. You're driving tonight."Mr. Graves dropped a set of keys into Ethan's palm at the end of his shift.
