The first punch broke his nose.
The second drove the air from his lungs. By the third, Ethan was on the ground, cheek pressed against wet concrete, the taste of blood and dirt in his mouth.
"Get up," Derek said. "Come on, human. Fight back. Oh, wait. You can't."
A boot slammed into his ribs. Something cracked.
Ethan curled around the pain. Above him, five pairs of amber eyes circled like hungry lights.
"He's not even crying," Kyle Morgan said, sounding almost disappointed. "That's creepy."
"He's in shock." Derek crouched and grabbed a fistful of Ethan's hair, lifting his face out of the puddle. "Here's the funny part, Cole. Nobody's going to look for you. Not the pack. Not the police. My father owns half the officers in this city."
He leaned closer and smiled.
"And when your little sister comes crying to the estate gate asking where her brother went? Maybe I'll pay her a visit. Teach her what happens to trash."
Something inside Ethan snapped.
He didn't think. He moved. His forehead smashed into Derek's face with every ounce of strength he had left.
Derek reeled back, howling, blood pouring between his fingers.
For one second, the alley was silent.
Then Derek lowered his hand. His eyes had gone from amber to a burning red-gold. His jaw stretched. His fingers lengthened into claws as long as knives.
"Hold him down," he snarled, his voice half human, half beast.
Four pairs of hands pinned Ethan to the concrete.
The claws came down.
***
Pain. White, endless pain, tearing across his chest.
Then cold.
As his blood spilled across the ground and the laughter above him faded like voices underwater, Ethan felt cold spreading from the center of his chest. Not the cold of the night. Something deeper. Something he somehow remembered.
I've felt this before.
The alley vanished.
For one heartbeat he was somewhere else: a candlelit room, rose petals on a stone floor, the rustle of a crimson dress. A woman standing over him, silver hair falling like moonlight across her shoulders.
He couldn't see her face. Only her hand. Small. Pale. Trembling.
And a voice, soft and broken, whispering words he almost understood.
If you're ever lost, I'll find you.
Then darkness.
And in that darkness, a sound. A clear, cold chime, like a crystal bell ringing inside his skull.

Ethan's eyes flew open.
He was still in the alley. Still bleeding. Derek and the others were walking away, their laughter echoing off the walls.
"Leave him," Derek was saying, pressing a handkerchief to his broken nose. "If he lives, he'll remember his place. If he doesn't, no one will miss him."
Ethan barely heard them. Floating in the air in front of his face, glowing soft gold against the darkness, was a translucent blue panel.
[Host: Ethan Cole]
[Race: Human (Anomaly detected)]
[Wolf: None | Golden Wolf Core: Sealed (Seal 1 of 7)]
[Strength: 3 | Speed: 4 | Senses: 2 | Vitality: 1 (CRITICAL)]
I'm hallucinating, Ethan thought. Blood loss. I'm dying, and my brain is inventing a video game.
[Host is not hallucinating.]
He stopped breathing. Wolf core? He was human. Completely, boringly human, like his mother and his father and Lily. Humans didn't have wolf cores. The words had appeared in answer to his thought. Something had heard him.
[Emergency Mission issued.]
[MISSION: Survive. Stand up within 60 seconds.]
[Reward: Emergency Healing. Seal 1 progress +10%.]
[Failure: Host death.]
[59... 58... 57...]
"Stand up?" Ethan rasped. Blood bubbled at his lips. "I can't feel my legs."
[54... 53...]
The numbers kept falling. Cold. Indifferent.
He thought of the hospital bill. Of his mother asking about him from that narrow bed. Of Lily, alone in their tiny apartment, waiting for a brother who would never come home.
Of Derek saying, maybe I'll pay her a visit.
He pressed his palm against the concrete.
[41... 40...]
His arm shook. His ribs screamed. He got one knee under himself and collapsed face first into the puddle.
[26... 25...]
"Come on," he whispered. "Come on."
He clawed at the brick wall and dragged himself upward inch by inch, leaving a smear of red behind him. His vision darkened at the edges. His legs buckled.
[6... 5... 4...]
He locked his knees.
[2... 1...]
Ethan Cole stood.
[Mission complete. Emergency Healing activated.]
Heat exploded through his body.
It started in his chest, where Derek's claws had torn him open, and poured outward like liquid sunlight through his veins. He gasped and staggered as his broken ribs shifted and snapped back into place. The deep gashes across his chest pulled together, sealed, and faded into three thin, pale scars.
His nose straightened with a crunch.
The pain was gone.
[Seal 1 progress: 10%.]
[The wolf stirs.]
And deep inside him, so faint he might have imagined it, something breathed. Something old. Something enormous. Something that had been sleeping for a very long time.
"What are you?" Ethan whispered. "What's happening to me?"
The panel hesitated, as if the cold voice behind it had to choose its words.
[Answer locked. Recover your memories, Host.]
[You were not always weak.]

At the mouth of the alley, Derek stopped laughing.
He had turned back for one last look, maybe to spit on the body, and found Ethan standing against the wall. Upright. Breathing. His shirt shredded and soaked with blood, but the skin underneath was whole.
"That's impossible," Kyle whispered. "Derek, I saw his ribs. I heard them break."
Derek's face twisted. For a moment, something like fear flickered in his eyes. Then rage swallowed it.
"Get him," he snapped. "Finish it."
Two of his friends stepped forward. Ethan's whole body tensed. He had no idea whether he could fight. He wasn't even sure he could run.
Then blue and red lights swept across the alley walls. A siren whooped once, close.
"Patrol car," someone hissed. "Not one of ours."
Derek swore. He jabbed a finger at Ethan, his voice shaking with fury.
"This isn't over, Cole. You hear me? You just made the biggest mistake of your life."
As he backed away, he pulled out his phone and pressed it to his ear. The words were quiet, meant for no one else, but somehow Ethan caught them, faint as an echo.
"Jace. Change of plans. You know where the Cole kid lives." A pause. "Yeah. Take the sister. Let's see how tough he is when we've got something he cares about."
Then they were gone, melting into the dark between the parked cars.
Ethan's heart stopped.
Take the sister.
He shoved himself off the wall and ran. His legs wobbled, his head spun, and his blood-soaked sneakers slipped on the wet pavement, but he ran. He reached his scooter at the edge of the service road and tore it off its stand, fumbling for the key with fingers that no longer shook.
He tried to call Lily. Straight to voicemail.
He called again. Voicemail.
She's asleep, he told himself. She always puts her phone on silent. She's fine. She's fine.
The engine coughed, died, coughed again, and finally caught.
He was halfway out of the service road when his phone buzzed in his pocket. The screen was cracked, but still working.
Lily.
He braked so hard the scooter skidded sideways, and answered. "Lily? What's wrong?"
For a moment, all he heard was breathing. Fast. Terrified.
Then his sister's voice, barely a whisper.
"Ethan... there are men outside our door. They're saying your name."
A loud bang echoed through the phone. Wood splintering.
Lily screamed.
The line went dead.
The blue panel snapped open in front of him, glowing brighter than before, the letters sharp and urgent.
[New Mission issued.]
[MISSION: Protect Lily.]
[Time limit: 10 minutes.]
[Reward: Wolf Senses Lv.1. Seal 1 progress +40%.]
[Failure: ...]
The last line flickered, as if the System could not bring itself to write the word.
Ten minutes. Their apartment was twenty minutes away on a good night, and his old scooter had never had a good night in its life.
It didn't matter.
Ethan twisted the throttle as far as it would go and shot into the night. Red lights blurred past. Horns blared. A taxi swerved and its driver screamed something at him, and he didn't hear a word of it.
All he could hear was his sister's scream, playing over and over in his head.

The uniform still smelled like his father.Ethan found it in the back of the estate's uniform closet on Monday morning, hanging in a plastic bag with a faded name tag pinned to the chest: D. COLE. Chapter 13: Fight Night
The Pit had never been this full.Five hundred werewolves packed the old rail tunnel, standing on crates, hanging from the rusted support beams, pressed so tightly against the cage that the chain-link bowed inward. A label on the side read REDLINE — PROTOTYPE 7 — HALE BIOSCIENCES."Isn't it pretty?" Victoria said.Selene stood by the window, hands folded behind her back. "What does it do?""For about ten minutes, it makes a wolf three times stronger than he has any right to be. Faster. Angrier. Pain stops meaning anything." Victoria lifted the vial and turned it in the light. "After ten minutes, the heart usually gives out. We're still working on that part.""And you're giving it to Derek Reed.""Marcus asked very nicely." Victoria smiled. "He's terrified his son will lose to a human in front of the whole city. It would be the end of the Reed name. So I offered him a little help."Selene kept her voice perfectly flat. "You bet against Derek.""I did." Victoria set the vial back in the case and closed the lid with a soft click. "And I'll probably lose. Unless the Cole b
