Chapter 2: ON THE RUN

Miguel's knees weakened as he looked at the now dead old woman.he stood for minutes his body still in shock, when he composed himself, he thought of what to do, his first instinct was to call the police but then, he feared he would  land himself in trouble,

So he did the only thing he thought was possible that moment which was to ran.

For the next three days, Miguel didn't leave his house, he stayed in his one room apartment unable to sleep or eat.

The old woman ’s face haunted him every time he closed his eyes, it was driving him insane.

In the afternoon of the third day after the incident, Miguel decided to take a walk to clear his mind but he soon realized this was a big mistake because every glance he received from strangers on the streets felt like a warning, it was like everyone knew what he had done or what he hadn't done because quite alright he hadn't pushed the old woman to her death but he didn't report it either.

He began to wonder if the old woman ’s death was an accident which occared while she was trying to go after him or if she simply decided to kill herself. He also wondered how long it would take before someone noticed she was dead, as It seemed she lived by herself in the Villa. Miguel began to imagine how she would rot as days went by and felt horrible so he decided just there and then to go back to the Villa just to check if someone had find her yet, it would give him some sort of comfort if the old woman was put to rest.

When he reached a short distance away from the Villa, he noticed a bunch of reporters and police officers at the main entrance of the Villa, he didn't need to be told what was happening so he turned around and left with a sign of relief, maybe now he would be able to get some sleep without the old woman haunting his dreams.

Miguel went to a small restaurant to grab something to eat as he hadn't eaten for days, he sat at the far end of the restaurant as he waited for his food when suddenly, his attention drifted to the Tv,

They were covering a story about an old woman found dead in her home. Miguel immediately knew it was the same old woman,

Through the news, he got to learn that the old woman's name was Elizabeth, she had three children whom where well known and extremely rich each owning a successful company,

What triggered Miguel's fear was the speech the old woman's youngest Daughter gave,

She said she knew her mother all to well to know she didn't kill herself, Miguel let out a scolf at that, if she knew her mother too well, she would have known the woman was already willing to kill herself had what had happened not happened.

The Daughter proceeded to say they would catch whoever did this to her mother and even added that they saw the suspect through the CCtv footage. Upon hearing this. Miguel's face was immediately pale as he began to stress about what would happen to him if he was caught, this was worse than he had thought, perhaps he should have called the police when the old woman died but now it was too late for regrets. Miguel left the restaurant without eating, he was too scared and immediately rushed back to his apartment.

Has he was opening the door to his apartment, his neighbor from the next door happened to be coming out of her apartment,

“Hey” she greeted Miguel

“Hello” Miguel spoke with a forced smile frantically trying to unlock the door 

“The police where here looking for you” his neighbor casually said. Upon hearing that, the keys dropped from Miguel's shaky handsas he turned to the woman

“Are you okay?” The woman touched his shoulder but he immediately flinched backing away from her

“Am sorry. Did they say what they wanted?” He asked, the woman shook her head but the look of suspicion on her face didn't go unoticed 

“No but they asked if I had any idea where you worked and I told them” the woman explained, 

“alright thanks” Miguel decided not to enter his apartment and immediately rushed out as if something was chasing him, he ran for a long time until he was out of breath. When he stopped to catch a breath, he stood in front of a bridge. His next move was very clear, it was better he died than going to prison for a crime he didn't even commit.

Miguel had his share of bad luck since the time he was born. He was told his parents left him in front of an orphanage with only a note bearing his name ‘Migual’. He had been moving from one foster house to another until he turned 18 and that's when his real struggles began. He had been homeless for a few months before he eventually landed a small job which barely covered his rent.

He knew that even if he died right that moment, no one would care, no one would miss him or even attend his funeral if he ever got one. He would be buried like a dog and perhaps that's what he was. He let out a sign and stood on the edge of the bridge looking at the water underneath,

He didn't know how to swim so he knew once he jumped in, there was no turning back. It would be over for him.

He let out a sign knowing he had done all he could, he had been kind, had worked extra hard but still life was unfair to him.

What was the point of living if life was meaningless?, With one last sign, he jumped into the water and began to sink deep. Soon, life slowly began to slip out of his body or so he thought…
