CHAPTER 5

Alex's shocking words hit everyone like a thunderbolt. People stared at him with their mouths hanging open. They couldn't believe what they had just heard. Alex wasn't just claiming to be awakened - he was saying he had moved beyond the Warrior Realm completely. That would put him at Grandmaster level, the same rank that most Kings of War held.

Lewis felt his patience snap like a broken rope. He couldn't listen to this nonsense for one more second.

“How about you stop talking and prove you're not just some regular nobody!”

Immediately Lewis raised his hands and released his magic power into the center of the hall. The entire building started shaking like an earthquake was hitting it. People grabbed onto chairs and each other to keep from falling over.

A massive golden bell materialized in the middle of the room with a loud crash. The metal gleamed under the chandelier lights. Right in the center of the bell, a number appeared in bold black ink.

"Eight."

At that moment the crowd erupted in excited chatter when they saw that number. People pointed at the bell and whispered to their neighbors.

That eight meant Lewis had reached the eighth stage of the Warrior Realm. Only five star head commanders and higher were supposed to be able to reach that level. But here was Lewis, just a one star head commander, showing power that should have made him a five star by now. It was clear he hadn't bothered getting reassessed in a long time, or else his rank would have been much higher.

Immediately Lewis felt a small smile tug at the corner of his mouth when he heard all the amazed voices around him. People were finally seeing what he was really capable of.

He had been keeping his true strength hidden on purpose. His plan was to wait until he hit the twelfth stage of the Warrior Realm before getting his rank updated. That level would qualify him to become a King of War. But Alex's big mouth had forced his hand. Now he had to show everyone his real power to shut this fool up once and for all. At least Rose would finally understand who deserved her attention.

Then Lewis crossed his arms and stared directly at Alex.

“If you want to sleep with Lady Rose without her Golden State energy killing you, you need to be at least at the fourth stage of the Warrior Realm. So here's your test. If you can put even the tiniest scratch on this bell, that proves you've reached the fourth stage. But if you can't damage it at all, then everyone here will know you lied about being awakened.”

His voice got darker and more serious.

“And if it turns out you've been lying about having powers when you're really just a normal human, I'll kill you right here on the spot. That's the law when someone pretends to be an awakener when they're not.”

Hearing what Lewis just said, Rose felt her heart drop into her stomach. She was sure Alex was lying about being an awakener. There was no possible way he could have those kinds of powers. When they got married, he was already past the normal age when people awakened their abilities. Even if he had some rare late awakening like she did, climbing to the fourth stage of the Warrior Realm would take years and years. She had heard it took at least ten years to reach that level even with the best training and resources. Alex definitely didn't have access to anything like that.

“Listen to me, Alex. You have to be a real awakener to even touch that bell safely. If you're not awakened and you try to punch it, the energy backlash could kill you instantly.”

Rose tried to keep talking and warn him about the danger, but Alex cut her off before she could finish.

“Fine. I'll punch the bell so everyone here can see that I'm an awakener.”

Without wasting anymore time Alex stepped down from the platform with quick, confident movements. Rose couldn't believe what she was watching. She reached out to grab his arm and stop him, but he moved too fast. He was already walking toward the golden bell before she could catch him.

She had never seen Alex act this sure of himself in all the years she had known him. Alex wasn't the type to lie about things. He usually wouldn't claim he could do something unless he really could. But she was absolutely certain he was making a huge mistake this time. Her emotions were making him do something stupid and dangerous.

“It's okay, Alex. I promise you can see Julian anytime you want. You don't need to prove anything anymore.”

Rose's voice came out desperate and pleading as Alex's feet hit the lower floor. Sebastian Rowan, the five star head commander, spoke up from where he stood among the other military men.

“Listen carefully, Alex Benjamin. If you put your hand on that golden bell and you're not a real awakener, the energy will kill you on the spot even before Lewis do. Don't let your feelings cloud your judgment right now.”

Sebastian paused and made his voice sound gentler, almost caring.

“It would be better for you to step aside and watch Rose marry someone who can actually take care of her. Someone who can protect your daughter and give her a good life. That's better than dying here for no reason and leaving Rose to explain to your little girl what really happened to her father.”

Sebastian wasn't saying all this because he cared about Alex's well-being. He just wanted Rose to look his way and notice him. He was tired of standing in the shadows while Lewis and Henry King acted like they were the only options. He deserved a chance too.

Lewis jumped in at that moment with a smug look on his face.

“According to our laws, Alex should be executed right here for giving false hope to all these normal citizens. But because I understand he loves Lady Rose, I'm willing to let him walk out of here alive. However, there's one condition. Alex must apologize to everyone in this room and admit out loud that he is not an awakener.”
