Chapter 9: Battle of the Bulwark

The heavy iron slabs of the gate didn't just fall; they shrieked as they hit the concrete, a sound that felt like it was ripping Adrian’s ear drums out.

“System! Please tell me Sector 4 is ready to dance!” Adrian yelled, shielding his eyes from the billowing wall of dust.

[ System: Trigger sequences standing by. Recommendation: Don't miss. ]

“Jax! Now! Pull the first anchor!” Adrian roared into his comms.

“I’m pulling! I’m pulling! It’s stuck—wait, there it goes!” Jax’s voice was an octave higher than usual, cracking under the strain.

A series of heavy clunks echoed from the floorboards of the main ramp. The first wave of mutants—sinewy, pale things with too many joints—didn't even have time to hiss. The floor plates beneath them buckled, tilting at a sharp angle.

“It's working! Look at them slide!” Grimm’s voice crackled through the speakers, followed by the sound of something wet and heavy hitting a pit of spikes. “That grease mix is better than butter, Adrian!”

“Don't get cocky, Grimm! Here comes the big one!” Adrian pointed at the monitors.

The Harvester-Alpha didn't jump into the pit. It stood at the edge, its massive, oil-black claws digging into the masonry to stabilize itself. It let out a roar that vibrated the very monitors in front of Adrian's face.

“Seraphina! It’s flanking the pit!” Adrian barked. “Get to the support columns!”

“I’m already there! I need light, Adrian! I can’t hit the vitals if I’m shooting at shadows!” she yelled back, the rhythmic crack-crack-crack of her pistol punctuating her words.

“System, divert life-support power to the high-intensity floodlights! Target: The Alpha’s face!”

[ Warning: Life support reserves will drop to zero. You will have six minutes of breathable air. ]

“We’ll be dead in three minutes if that thing gets past the junction! Flip the switch!”

A blinding, violet light erupted in the hangar, illuminating the Alpha in all its grotesque, multi-limbed glory. It recoiled, its many eyes squinting in agony.

“Nice! My turn!” Grimm shouted. “Hey, ugly! See this? It’s a gift from Sector 7!”

“Grimm, wait for the surge!” Adrian warned, his fingers flying across the touch panel. “Silas, give me everything the generators have! I want five thousand volts in the inner-rail beam!”

“You’re gonna melt the wiring, Boss!” Silas screamed over the drone of the engines.

“Better the wiring than our faces! Just push the lever!”

A surge of blue electricity raced across the high-voltage beams Adrian had rerouted across the ceiling. The Alpha, attempting to crawl along the rafters to avoid the grease-slide, put a claw directly onto the glowing copper.

BZZZZZT.

The sound was like a steak hitting a hot skillet the size of a truck. The Alpha convulsed, its massive body jerking as blue arcs of lightning danced across its hide.

“Is it dead? Tell me it’s dead!” Jax whimpered.

“It’s an Apex mutant, Jax. It’s not going to roll over because of a little static,” Adrian muttered, his eyes glued to the heat signature. “System, status!”

[ System: Target health at 72%. Structural integrity of the ceiling rail: Critical. Warning: It’s angry now. ]

“Seventy-two percent? After five thousand volts?” Adrian wiped sweat from his upper lip. “Okay, plan B. Seraphina, you’ve got to lure it toward the center-plate.”

“The center-plate? Adrian, that’s where the fault line is!” Seraphina shouted, her silhouette dodging a piece of falling debris. “If I stand there, I’m dead!”

“I’m micro-adjusting the drop! I swear! Just three more steps to your left!”

“You better not be lying about the math, Architect!” Seraphina sprinted across the open hangar floor, her boots clattering against the metal.

The Alpha, recovering from the shock, dropped from the ceiling with a ground-shaking thud. It focused its focus on the small, fast-moving woman.

“It’s following her! Adrian, move the floor!” Grimm yelled.

“Not yet... wait for the pivot point...” Adrian’s thumb hovered over the red manual override.

“Adrian! It’s right behind me!” Seraphina’s voice was strained, breathless.

“Wait for it...”

“Adrian!”

“Now!” Adrian slammed his fist onto the button.

The center-plate didn't just slide—it retracted with a kinetic snap. But the Alpha was faster than Adrian anticipated. It didn't fall. It lunged, its massive weight hitting the edge of the retracting plate, causing the whole mechanism to jam at a forty-five-degree angle.

“Oh no,” Jax whispered. “It’s holding the door open.”

“Seraphina, jump!” Adrian screamed.

She leaped across the widening gap, but her hand slipped on the grease-slicked concrete of the far side. She dangled over the pit, her fingers scratching for a grip as the Alpha loomed over her from the jammed plate.

“System, I need more power! I need to drop that plate!” Adrian roared.

[ System: No reserves remaining. Unless you prioritize manual intervention. ]

“Adrian! It’s swinging!” Grimm’s voice was frantic.

Adrian didn't wait for the System to finish. He grabbed the heavy iron pipe he used as a lever and sprinted out of the med-bay control booth toward the catwalk.

“Boss! What are you doing?” Silas yelled.

“I’m fixing the structural error!” Adrian shouted back.

He reached the point directly above the jammed hinge. The Alpha was raising its claw to finish Seraphina off.

“Hey! Overgrown parasite!” Adrian screamed, jumping onto the support cable that held the tilted floor plate in place. “Physics says you shouldn't be standing there!”

He swung his weight out, using the momentum to slam the pipe into the primary lock-pin.

“Math! Logic! Force!” Adrian grunted, swinging the pipe with every bit of panic-fueled adrenaline in his body.

The pin snapped.

The ten-ton floor plate didn't just drop—it plummeted like a guillotine. The Alpha let out one final, choked screech as the weight of the steel plate, combined with its own momentum, dragged it straight down into the three-story drop of the trash compactor below.

CRUNCH.

The silence that followed was heavy. Thick.

“Seraphina!” Adrian gasped, hanging from the cable. “Give me your hand!”

A hand reached out, grabbing his wrist with a grip of literal iron. He hauled her up onto the steady ground, both of them collapsing onto the dusty floor, panting for air.

“You... you actually did it,” Seraphina wheezed, wiping black ichor from her cheek. “You dropped a whole floor on it.”

“It was... it was an unscheduled demolition,” Adrian panted. “Strictly professional.”

“Boss! You guys alive?” Jax called out through the intercom, sounding like he was about to burst into tears.

“We’re upright, Jax,” Adrian said, slowly pushing himself up. “Check the scanners. Did we get the rest of them?”

“The smaller ones are fleeing! The hive-mind must have broken when the Alpha hit the bottom,” Jax replied.

Grimm climbed up from the lower level, covered in oil but wearing a toothless grin. “Not bad, College Boy. Not bad at all. Efficient.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment,” Adrian said, leaning against the wall. “System, status report.”

[ Alert: Settlement integrity at 1%. Remaining Power: Emergency mode only. ]

“Great. We saved the house, but we can’t turn the stove on,” Adrian groaned.

“Adrian,” Seraphina said, her voice turning sharp again. She was looking out through the hole where the gate used to be.

Adrian followed her gaze. On the distant horizon, far beyond the smoke of the battle-train, a line of flickering headlights appeared. Not dozens. Hundreds.

“Knox isn't sending more mutants,” Seraphina whispered. “That’s the regular army. He was just waiting for us to use up our juice on the monsters.”

Adrian looked at his shaking hands, then at the ruins of his gate.

“System,” Adrian said, his voice cold. “Tell me we have one more trick left.”

[ System: There is one protocol remaining, Lord Adrian. But you won’t like the structural cost. ]

“At this point,” Adrian said, looking at the approaching army. “I don't care if the roof stays on, as long as it falls on them.”
