The heavy rain continued to fall as Maya's father drove through the nearly empty streets at a speed he would normally never have attempted. His hands gripped the steering wheel tightly, and his eyes remained fixed on the road ahead. Every now and then, he glanced anxiously at the rearview mirror, where Jake lay across the back seat with Maya supporting him.Jake had finally regained consciousness during the drive, but the color had not returned to his face. His breathing remained labored, and every movement seemed to require tremendous effort. Lucas slowly untied the strip of cloth that had been covering his eyes and pulled it away from his face. The rain continued to pour heavily outside, and as he blinked a few times to adjust his vision, his eyes immediately landed on Maya, her parents, and Jake lying helplessly in the thick mud outside the doorway.Their expensive clothes were soaked beyond recognition.
