Evans’ car rolled up to the curb outside his apartment building, the late evening air heavy with the scent of rain that hadn’t quite fallen. He was already rehearsing in his head the list of things he needed to do once inside.

He'd charge his phone whose battery had been dead since the last time he put a call through to Dylan. Then, he'd check his messages, reheat the leftover stir-fry and maybe finally get some proper sleep—when a familiar figure caught his eye.

Samantha Lewis.

She was descending the narrow staircase from his building, her heels clicking lightly against the concrete, her silhouette framed in the dim amber glow of the stairwell lamp.

Evans’ hands tightened on the steering wheel before instinctively pressing down on the brake.

If there was one person he had least expected to see in front of his house that evening, it'd be Samantha. It's been a while since they actually talked, especially after he found out that her father—Don Lewis was a close associate with Senator M

Superintendent Hayes was in his office in the east division of the CIA when a knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. He had been waiting for Director Whitaker to get back to him regarding Bella and Jackson and all that Whitaker had relayed back to him was that he had everything under control.Though, he expected more, he just had to believe that Whitaker really had everything under control, and there was no need to worry."Come in," Hayes said, still busy with what he was doing. One of the agents stepped inside, a thin folder tucked under his arm. “Sir,” the agent said, his voice clipped. “We received something from our field source. You’ll want to see this.”Hayes didn’t look up from the paperwork scattered before him. “If this is about the Lewis file, leave it.”The CIA has been on the case of the Lewis' for months and yet, they've not been able to find a loophole as to their underground operations as far as the Mafia world was concerned.“It’s not that, sir.” the agent slid th

  • Chapter 195: Evans’ Interruption!

It wasn't long after Copper and Whitaker left the facility where Jackson was, that Evans decided to return home too. His body had been craving for rest, and he knew it was time he gave to it what it was demanding from him.The drive back home was somewhat quiet as though the entire city had slept leaving him alone on the cold rainy night. However, as he drove, something gnawed at him that the only car behind him was tailing him. Every bend, every curve he took, the car had done the same. At first, he had thought it was just a mere coincidence. But now, pondering on it even more, the realization hit him that he was being followed, and whoever it was that was following him, was planning something bad against him.His hand brushed the inside of his jacket where his sidearm rested, his pace steady, not betraying the alertness in his eyes. Then, like something automatic, the car's headlights flared and immediately cut in front of him so sharply that he had to step on his brakes to avoid t

  • Chapter 194: Copper’s Dilemma!

The isolation room was quiet, save for the slow, steady beep of the monitoring equipment. Copper sat alone in the corner, elbows braced on his knees, staring at the faint rise and fall of Jackson's chest as if it were a clock ticking down to zero.On the small metal table beside him lay a single glass vial — Dylan’s serum — its contents a dark, viscous red that seemed to catch the light in strange, unnatural ways.Copper had turned it over in his hand for the better part of an hour, studying every reflection in its surface, searching for answers in a liquid that carried nothing but questions.Dylan’s words echoed in his head like a curse:“It could bring him back, Copper, and also has the potential to restore the Flameborn. But what we can't predict is what is likely to happen once it gets into his blood—whether his body will resist it or allow it."Copper wasn't new to the idea of the serum. He had known about everything from Philip and how Victor Vaughan had attempted to use the sam

  • Chapter 193: A Difficult Decision!

A few minutes after Samantha had been locked in her room, the sound of metal scraping against the lock broke the stillness. The door swung open, and Jack stepped inside, his broad frame filling the doorway. His eyes burned with a fury that made the air between them feel heavy.Samantha straightened instantly, sensing the storm in his expression.“What did he do to you?” Jack demanded, his voice a sharp bark that cut through the room."You mean father?" Samantha asked, her brow furrowing."Of course not!" Jack barked even more angrily this time around. “Who, then are you talking about, Jack?” Samantha asked, her surprise evident in her looks and in her voice.“That agent—Evans!” Jack’s voice rose, trembling with rage. “He slept with you, didn’t he? He took advantage of you!”Samantha blinked, startled at the accusation. She couldn't help but wonder how Jack had got to know about it. “It’s not his fault, Jack. I was the one who—”“You liar!” Jack snapped, stepping forward. His fists w

  • Chapter 192: Lock Samantha in Her Room!

Samantha froze in the doorway, her clutch slipping slightly in her grasp as her father’s voice rolled across the room like distant thunder before a storm. The morning light was dim, the blinds drawn just enough for sharp slats of sun to slice across Don Lewis’s tall frame. He stood at the wide window of his study, hands clasped loosely behind his back, his shoulders rigid as though the skyline outside had personally offended him."Where have you been all night?" His voice was controlled this time, almost quiet — the kind of quiet that promised an eruption.Samantha’s pulse jumped. She had rehearsed a dozen excuses during the drive home — drinks with friends, a sudden late-night charity function — but she had not accounted for this: him here. He wasn’t supposed to be here.He had left home the previous evening just before she left to visit Evans, on a business trip to Geneva and wasn't supposed to be back till the end of the week. That was the reason she had gathered enough courage to

  • Chapter 191: Take Us to Jackson, Now!

The following morning, Evans arrived at the CIA building looking like a man returning from exile. All his colleagues at the CIA began looking at him, making him feel somewhat uncomfortable.Only a few greeted him, while the others just stared, as he walked past.Inside the corner office, Whitaker was already in motion. His jacket was draped carelessly over the back of his chair, sleeves rolled to his elbows as he leaned over a wide scatter of open files, grainy surveillance photos, and typed mission briefs. A thin wisp of steam curled from the coffee mug at his elbow, but the man hadn’t touched it in an hour. When he glanced up and saw Evans framed in the doorway, his eyes widened — surprise first, then irritation tightening into something sharper.“Officer Evans.” He called out, unable to hide the surprise. “Where the hell have you been? And why haven’t you answered a single call?” Whitaker asked, all in one breath.Evans stepped inside, closing the door behind him with deliberate qu
