Chapter 12. A Heavy Decision

The explosion of blue fire energy eroded the surrounding Void, making the obsidian labyrinth tremble violently. Kael stood tall, his eyes radiating an intense deep blue light. He felt a flow of infinite power coursing through every inch of his body, a connection to the core of the universe that was previously unthinkable. This is true fire, he thought, a fire capable of rejecting the void.

However, amidst the euphoria of that new power, a shadow approached. It wasn't the Sovereign’s shadow, but one more familiar, more haunting. The face of his mother, Mara, pale and unconscious inside a prisoner’s cart. She was the vessel. She was the key to the ritual. She would be the sacrifice.

"Do you think power alone is enough, Kael?"

The voice was soft, yet it split Kael’s drifting consciousness. Before him, in the center of the blue fire vortex, the figure of Master Selama appeared. Not the wounded Selama, but the Selama he once knew: steadfast, full of authority, with faded blue eyes that radiated infinite wisdom. The old man held his staff, which now glowed faintly as if merging with Kael’s pure fire.

A mental projection? Kael wondered, yet his presence felt so real.

"Master..." Kael choked out.

"This is not my true self, child," Selama said, his voice calm. "This is the voice of your heart, calling for wisdom in the moment you need it. Your pure fire is too strong to remain idle. It demands a purpose, Kael. And you must give it one."

Kael felt the dilemma splitting his chest. "Mother... they are going to sacrifice her, Master. I saw the map. She is the vessel for their ritual. I can use this power to save her. I must!"

Selama sighed, his gaze never wavering from Kael. "And what will happen to the world if you save one person at the cost of billions?"

"I won't sacrifice anyone!" Kael shot back, the fire in his hands blazing more wildly. "I will save both! I will defeat the Sovereign and save Mother! I can!"

"Can you, Kael?" Selama raised his staff, pointing into the blue fire surrounding them. "This power is a gift, not a guarantee. Every choice has a price. If you focus on a single soul, the entire world will burn. If you focus on the world, the soul you love may be extinguished."

Kael staggered back, feeling struck by reality. The choice was like two gaping chasms, both equally terrifying. He saw the vision of Eldara Village burning, the blind orange flames from his own hands. That fear returned. What if I choose wrong? What if my decision destroys everything?

"I... I can't let Mother die. She’s the only family I have left," Kael whispered, his voice filled with despair. "She has suffered enough."

"She already taught you what it means to fight, didn't she?" Selama asked, his voice warming. "She protected you with her life, Kael. Do you think she wants you to sacrifice the hope of the world for her sake? Is that what she would want for her son, the Fire Conqueror?"

Kael closed his eyes, and an image of Mara appeared. Not the dying Mara, but the strong Mara, who looked at him with pride the night after Eldara burned. I’m proud of you, son. Those words were like an echo in his heart. Go, Kael. Save the world.

"But the Sovereign... he trapped me," Kael opened his eyes, the blue shimmer within them dimming. "This pure fire of mine... he intentionally lured it out for their ritual. I am nothing but a tool to them."

"It is not the Sovereign who trapped you, Kael. It is your fear that has trapped you," Selama stepped closer, his blue aura calming Kael’s fire. "Your father fled not because the fire was a curse, but because he had no choice. He had been infected by the Sovereign’s doubt, just as you feel within yourself. But you... you are different."

Selama placed his wrinkled hand on Kael’s shoulder. "You have rejected that poison. You have embraced your fire. This is no longer about the Sovereign. This is about you. Will you let destruction swallow everything just because you do not dare to make the hardest decision?"

Kael looked around. The Labyrinth of Laments began to crack under the pressure of his pure fire. He could feel Jax and Lyra; they were still fighting somewhere. They were counting on him. The whole world was counting on him. And his mother... his mother probably already knew. She might already be ready.

Hot tears streamed down Kael’s cheeks, mingling with the light of the fire that now faded from a deep blue to an unwavering bright blue. Those were tears for his mother, for the personal happiness he had to let go. This was the hardest farewell he had ever faced, even harder than watching Eldara burn. Because this time, Kael himself held the match.

"I... I will save the world, Master," Kael said, his voice trembling but full of determination. The blue fire in his hands stabilized, radiating a heat that rejected the cold of the Void. "I will stop the Shadow Sovereign. Even if it means... I have to lose Mother."

Selama smiled, a sincere and proud smile. "I knew you would do it, Conqueror."

Selama’s figure began to fade, turning into thousands of blue sparks that drifted in the air, danced for a moment, and then vanished into the core of Kael’s fire. Kael felt a weight in his heart, but also a new kind of strength. Not physical strength, but the strength of a mature decision. He had grown.

Goodbye, Mother, Kael thought, carving his mother’s face deep into his heart. I will fight so that your sacrifice is not in vain.

The blue fire around Kael expanded, not with a destructive explosion, but with a radiance of pure energy that pushed matter aside. The labyrinth that was once misleading now trembled; its obsidian walls cracked and shattered, not from an impact, but because the Void within them could not withstand the intensity of the light Kael emitted.

The twisting corridors opened up, revealing the true exit. Kael stepped forward, his breath steady, his eyes glowing with an unwavering blue fire. His resolve was as hard as steel.

He surged through the final crack in the wall. Outside the labyrinth, a long suspension bridge stretched over a chasm of Void energy. On the other side of the bridge, in the heart of the fortress's darkness, hundreds of shadow warriors awaited him. Behind them stood Xarath, grinning with a hungry gaze.

And in the middle of that sea of enemies, atop an altar made of Void crystal, lay the figure of Mara. Bound, unconscious, with a faint purple light beginning to flow from her veins, preparing to become the vessel for the ritual of destruction.

Kael did not stop. He stepped forward, the blue fire in his hands blazing, illuminating the darkness and the faces of his enemies.

"I am coming," he roared, his voice splitting the air, full of rage and newfound determination. "I am coming to stop you. I am coming to burn you all!"

The stone monolith had gone dark once more, its ancient carvings no longer glowing—making the terrifying whisper from moments ago feel almost like an illusion. But in Kael’s mind, the voice still echoed, sharp and unmistakable:*“The final flame has been extinguished… now, the awakening of nothingness begins. This gate… is only the beginning.”*The words pierced him like ice, freezing his very soul. The final flame. Was it truly about him? He knelt beside the young archaeologist, checking his pulse.“He’s unconscious,

Chapter 36 – Traces at the ThresholdThe morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of dew and damp earth from the forests beyond the City of Hope. Kael, Jax, and Lyra rode northward, leaving behind the city gates that now stood strong and welcoming. Towering trees lined the path, which gradually gave way to a rougher trail of stone and gravel—clear signs they were moving farther from the newly rebuilt civilization.Lyra led at the front, her sharp eyes scanning every footprint in the soil, every subtle movement among the leaves. Jax rode beside Kael, his longsword shifting slightly in its sheath—a quiet signal of the vigilance that never left a commander. Kael took a deep breath. This journey felt… strange. It had been a long time since he had walked forest paths like this, far from the hum of conferences and reconstruction efforts. Once, every step in the wild had meant preparation for battle, every gust of wind a whisper of danger. Now, he was simply a guardian of peace conducting a

Beside him, Jax—now in a more formal yet still practical commander’s uniform—nodded occasionally as he spoke with a delegate from a coastal city. On the other side of the plaza, Lyra, with her signature explorer’s pack, was deep in discussion with a botanist, likely exchanging ideas about newly discovered species in recently mapped regions. This event marked three years since peace had returned—a moment to honor past sacrifices and celebrate the future they had built together.Kael felt at ease. The weight that once pressed heavily on his chest had lifted, replaced by a deep, steady peace. He w

Chapter 32. Battle of the Remnants of DarknessKael’s breath hitched. In the center of Rian’s tiny palm, an orange ember flickered, then vanished. It was exactly like the ancient spark that used to burn in his own hands back in Eldara Village. Kael stared at the boy, his heart pounding, a cold premonition creeping down his spine. The fire had not gone extinct. He turned toward the ruins of the former Void Bringer headquarters in the distance, where the Void crystal in his pocket pulsed stronger than usual. Was this the reason? Was the remnant of its power seeking a new vessel? Kael looked back at Rian, an innocent child who had no idea what kind of danger he had just revealed. This was no longer about the past. This was about the future."Uncle Kael?" Rian tugged at Kael’s cloak. "Why are you just standing there?"Kael smiled, trying to hide his concern. "It’s nothing, kid. I was just surprised to see your talent. But don't do that inside the tent, okay? It could be dangerous.""Under
