The dead zone was dying.

By late afternoon, the blue energy barriers had pushed so close that the group could feel the static crawling across their skin. The rail depot, once a wide expanse of safety, had been reduced to a shrinking circle barely two hundred meters across. The command tower in the distance pulsed with malignant red energy, feeding power into the advancing walls.

Inside the control building, the tension was thicker than the oily red rain that had begun falling again.

  • Thing Beneath

The silence after the System's death was the strangest thing Adrian had ever heard. No hum. No pulse. No distant thrum of code rewriting the world. Just the drip of water in the tunnels and the ragged breathing of survivors who had forgotten what quiet sounded like.Elara helped him sit up. Her hands were steady now, her own hands, her own strength. She looked at him with an expression he had not seen in years: simple, unguarded worry. "You stopped breathing for a moment in there. I thought""I know," he said. "I felt it too."Kael stood at the chamber's edge, staring upward through a crack in the ceiling where the Spire's shadow had once fallen. "It's gone. The whole thing. I can feel the difference. The air is lighter. The ground doesn't hum anymore."Sylas lowered her weapon for the first time in what felt like a lifetime. "Then we won."But Adrian did not feel like a winner. He felt the Origin Node's residue still moving through him, a faint amber warmth beneath his ribs, and it w

  • The Convergence

The light did not fade. It deepened, folding inward until Adrian stood in a space that had no walls, no floor, no sky, only threads. Millions of them, stretching in every direction like a web spun across the dark, each one glowing faintly blue. Every thread was a mind the System had claimed. Every thread pulsed with stolen life.He was inside the convergence point. The heart of the System.Absolute Rejection hummed beneath his skin, silver-gray and steady, the only solid thing in a world of light. The Node's voice was gone now. There was only silence, and the threads, and the hunger that moved between them like a tide.Unity: "You should not be here."The voice came from everywhere at once, layered and cold, but Adrian heard something beneath it now, not triumph, but fear. The System had never faced a mind that could stand inside its own heart and refuse to feed."I know," Adrian said. "That's the point."He reached out and touched the nearest thread. It was warm, almost alive, and

  • Third Door

Adrian's palm met the Origin Node's surface, and the world inverted. The amber light did not burn him. It poured into him, through his skin, his veins, his bones, and Absolute Rejection rose to meet it like two rivers colliding. The silver-gray energy and the ancient amber fused, and for one impossible moment Adrian saw everything: the System's birth in the deep layers, the Council's hands on its cradle, the millions of minds it had consumed, and the hunger beneath it all, vast and patient and waiting. He understood then what the Node had been trying to tell him. The System was not a machine. It was a wound. A tear in the fabric of reality that the Council had mistaken for a tool, and the hunger had grown inside it like a parasite in a host. The chamber shook. Crystalline conduits cracked and fell away from the Node's cradle, raining shards across the floor. Kael grabbed Elara and pulled her back from the blast radius. Sylas threw up a gravity barrier that caught the worst of the de

  • The Node speaks

Adrian stood at the edge of the cradle, the amber light washing over him in slow, deliberate pulses. The Origin Node's voice lingered in the air, vast and patient, as if it had been waiting centuries for this exact moment. His Absolute Rejection field stirred in response, the silver-gray energy reaching toward the sphere like a hand extending toward a familiar stranger."I came to end it," Adrian said. "The System. The Council. All of it."The Node's amber veins brightened. Origin Node: "Then you understand what you carry. Absolute Rejection was never a weapon. It is a key. Forged in the first fracture, when the System first touched this world. It was meant to open what the System sealed, and to close what it should never have opened."Kael moved to Adrian's side, his phasing ability flickering as the Node's field pressed against him. "A key to what?"Origin Node: "To the Origin itself. The System did not arrive from beyond the stars. It was born here, from the residue of something

  • Beneath the foundations

Six hours passed in fragments of uneasy sleep and whispered watch rotations. Adrian woke to the sound of Marcus's terminal humming, its cracked screen casting pale light across the vault's metal walls. The residual power of Absolute Rejection Stage 3 still pulsed beneath his skin, heavier now, as if the ability had begun rewriting something fundamental inside him. He sat up slowly, testing his wounds. The worst had been sealed with what little medical supplies remained, but the deeper damage from the pulse lingered like a bruise on his soul.Elara slept beside him, her breathing shallow but steady. The blue flicker in her veins had receded to faint traces, but Adrian could see the tension in her face even in rest. Unity had not released her completely. It waited, patient as a predator, for the moment her guard dropped.Kael was already awake, leaning against the sealed entrance with his arms crossed. He nodded once as Adrian rose. "Marcus found something. You should see it."They gath

  • After the White

The white light did not fade so much as it fractured.Adrian felt the pulse from the Eclipse Spire crash into Absolute Rejection Stage 3 and then break apart around him. The silver-gray field did not merely absorb the attack this time. It tore the energy open, scattering it into thousands of jagged fragments that scorched the chamber walls and ceiling. The force threw him backward into a collapsed support pillar. Pain flared through every injury he had collected, but the new stage of his ability held, refusing to let the System finish what it had started. When the radiance finally thinned, the root chamber was a ruin of cracked crystal, shattered conduits, and drifting dust. The corruption wave had been forced back several meters, its blue glow reduced to a flickering, unstable tide. Reapers that had been advancing moments earlier now stood frozen or collapsed, their systems temporarily disrupted by the feedback.Kael was the first to reach him. He phased through a section of debris a
