Chapter 2

After the loud shout, Henry's eyes glanced down at Calvin's shabby appearance. "Are you shameless enough to come to the Winter family in that shabby shirt?" He spat, his expression disgusted.

Ludwig's eyes widened slightly, staring at the shirt he was wearing. He had deliberately worn that shirt. The shirt he had been given before his father's death. It was a sign of respect for his father, and he had deliberately worn it, believing that his father would feel his side.

However, he hadn't expected such a negative attitude from the Winter family.

"I don't even understand how you can come so confidently to propose to my daughter when you have nothing left," Henry pressed him.

Of course, the disappearance of Harold's family had already spread far and wide. Everyone knew that Harold's family was not only destroyed, but completely gone. So, at that moment, Henry immediately forgot about his arranged marriage with Harold's family. Remembering that his father, who had made the promise of the marriage, was dead, Henry was free to forget it.

There was nothing to expect from Ludwig. Even after five years of absence, the man returned looking so unsightly. This naturally aroused Hanry's negative thoughts, as he assumed Ludwig would bring nothing but misfortune and shame to the Winter family.

Hanry continued to stare at him cynically. He never imagined having a son-in-law as poor as Ludwig. His only wish was to marry his only daughter to such an extraordinary man.

"I know you're thinking about exploiting the Winter family, aren't you? You've lost your family and all the Harold family fortune, so you're thinking about staying here?" The man pressed his accusation.

A wicked grin appeared on Hanry's face. "After five years, you've reappeared. I never thought you'd just come here to be a parasite. How disgusting."

Ludwig suppressed his anger. He could destroy this place with one hand in a matter of seconds. But he remembered his father's request, and he had even sworn to keep his promise to marry the Winter family's daughter.

The man remained calm, staring at Henry, who continued to look down on him.

Some of the people there stared at him and began to laugh.

“I thought Harold’s family had been destroyed. I didn’t expect him to still be alive.”

“Harold’s family has lost its glory days. But he came and asked to marry Miss Lyra. He’s truly shameless.”

“Oh, that’s truly embarrassing. He’s so stupid.”

Some people began to talk disparagingly about Ludwig. None of them knew that Ludwig was a truly outstanding war general. They only knew a little of the obvious truth. In reality, Harold’s family hadn’t truly lost all their wealth.

Meanwhile, Lyra listened to all the talk with sadness. She was displeased with her father’s bad attitude.

Lyra had never forgotten the agreement five years ago. She walked over and grabbed her father’s hand, trying to stop him. “Father, isn’t this a true family agreement? You shouldn’t be acting like that.”

Henry glared at Lyra. Of course, he wasn't happy with his daughter's bold statement in front of everyone.

Lyra looked at her father with sad eyes. "Dad, I'm going to marry him." Lyra looked at Ludwig's face after speaking.

Henry's body shook with anger. He considered Lyra to be impudent. "How dare you say that! Didn't you hear my decision?" His voice boomed loudly.

The shout suddenly made Lyra's hand slip from her father's. She had always known that all of her father's decisions must be obeyed.

Lyra swallowed nervously. She dared to look at her father. "Didn't we talk about this five years ago?"

"Father, grandfather always insisted that I wait until this time and marry the son of the Harold family. He has arrived, and I am ready to marry him." Lyra tried to explain.

Lyra knew this would further infuriate her father. But she continued to stare pleadingly at him.

"Father, I will remain engaged to that man." Lyra emphasized her decision.

Henry's face turned even more menacing. His jaw tightened with anger. A hard slap landed across Lyra's face.

"You idiot! How dare you defy me?"

Lyra felt her cheek burn. Her hands quickly cupped her cheeks, and tears began to flow.

Everyone there was truly shocked. But they all thought Lyra deserved it.

“I wonder what Miss Lyra was thinking. Doesn’t she know that a poor man like Ludwig has nothing to look forward to?”

“She’s a naive woman.”

“She should be happy about her father’s rejection.”

Some people began to gossip, but Lyra didn’t care. She would never betray her grandfather’s decision. She had promised to marry only the son of the Harold family.

Lyra had been waiting for news of him. For years, she had almost lost hope and assumed Ludwig was dead. But now she knew he was alive. He had come, determined to fulfill his promise.

Lyra wiped away the remaining tears. She looked up at her father with courage. “Father, I will still marry him.”

Anne, who was there, was furious. She pulled her daughter away roughly. “What are you saying? Do you think I’d be willing to see my daughter marry a poor young man?”

Ludwig clenched his fists. He wasn’t happy with their arrogant attitude toward Lyra. In fact, after that insult, Ludwig wanted to leave. But he remembered his father’s will. And regarding Lyra, she had even agreed.

Ludwig’s gaze grew colder. He moved closer to Hanry. “This is completely against the agreement we made.” Ludwig stared at Lyra. “And it’s inappropriate for a man to raise his hand against his daughter.”

Hanry grew even more irritated by Ludwig’s words. “I could even kill my daughter if I wanted to. Stop lecturing me!”

“Even my father helped the previous head of the Winter family. And you should have kept that promise,” Ludwig reminded him sternly.

The laughter immediately grew louder than before. “Even your father is dead. Of course I have nothing to say in return. Besides, my father is dead too. And there’s nothing to be done about that stupid agreement.”

Previously, Hanry had no objections whatsoever to the arranged marriage his father had made for his daughter. But after learning that Harold's family was no longer so prominent, he needed to put the relationship behind him before it could even happen.

This time, Hanry stepped forward, this time very close. Hanry raised his hand, pointing a finger at Ludwig's chest. "That agreement was annulled with your father's death.”
