Lyra was the only daughter of the Winter family. Naturally, Hanry wanted an outstanding son-in-law for his daughter. And having a parasite son-in-law was a huge shame. It would forever be a disgrace to the Winter family.

Ludwig stared at the man standing arrogantly before him. He immediately moved Hanry's index finger away from his chest. "I've waited for her for five years. And you shouldn't have betrayed her." His words were filled with emphasis.

Hanry glared angrily at the man who had dared to touch her. "You shouldn't have let those filthy hands touch mine!" He quickly wiped his hand on his jacket, a disgusted expression on his face.

His gaze returned to firmness. "You should have thought about it. A poor man like you is certainly not worthy of proposing to my wonderful daughter." Hanry turned to look at Lyra beside him. "She is a beautiful woman, the only daughter of the Winter family."

"Everyone knows that Lyra is not only the daughter of the Winter family, but news of Lyra's greatness has already spread." Hanry's words were piercing. He deliberately said them to open Ludwig's eyes and wake him up. "Besides, the Winter family is so flashy, they certainly don't deserve a common man like you."

Everyone gave him intimidating looks. No one there defended Ludwig. Everyone fully supported Hanry's decision, which they considered correct.

No one had expected Ludwig's arrival. In fact, they would rather hear the news of Ludwig's death than witness the marriage of Ludwig and Lyra, who were considered unequal.

Of course, the name Ludwig Harold was familiar to those present. They had previously known of Harold's extraordinary family, but news of his family's death and destruction had also spread far and wide. And of course, a woman like Lyra didn't deserve a poor man like Ludwig.

Hanny had previously heard that Ludwig was the only survivor of the great fire. But then he heard that Ludwig had gone to war. And after that, for years, she heard no more news of Ludwig. She thought he was dead, a front-line soldier on the battlefield. But she never expected Ludwig to return and demand that promise.

"I heard after the destruction of Harold's family, you went into the military. And aren't you just a common soldier?"

She looked at him disdainfully. "You should know your place; nothing can be expected from a common soldier." Their eyes met and they glared sharply. "It would be better if you knew your place. You're not worthy of being the son-in-law of the Winter family."

Hanry was convinced that Ludwig had a poor life. His humble appearance was evident. And that certainly meant that Ludwig's life was no better than it appeared.

"You should know that your job won't be able to support and provide happiness for Lyra," Hanry said dismissively.

A common soldier only earned a low salary. In fact, Hanry was certain that his salary wouldn't bring any happiness to his daughter. It wouldn't be able to provide the comfort Lyra was accustomed to in the Winter family.

Hanry believed that ordinary soldiers like Ludwig wouldn't live long. Often, they would be at the forefront, dying prematurely to protect their superiors. So he needed to think about his daughter's fate.

Hanry looked at the still-grieving Lyra, thinking her a fool.

"Who dares to ruin my engagement party?" A man's shout made everyone turn their heads.

A man in a white suit stood with his hands in his trouser pockets. A Rolex watch hung on his wrist. A hanging car key confirmed his wealthy status.

Everyone immediately recognized that the man was Charles White, the only son of the distinguished White family.

Everyone greeted Charles's arrival with joy, believing him to be the most suitable man for Lyra Winter.

Charles's gaze sharpened, staring at a shabby-looking man standing at his engagement party. He had just learned that the man had come to cause trouble.

Ludwig, meanwhile, stared coldly at Charles, their eyes meeting. This made Charles unhappy. A poor man shouldn't have dared to look up and stare at him so disrespectfully.

"Who are you? Go away. Don't ruin my engagement to Lyra," Charles insisted.

Ludwig remained standing where he was. He had been waiting for this day. For five years, he had never forgotten about the agreement. So he wasn't going to leave so easily.

Charles grew even angrier. He clucked impatiently. "Are you deaf? Get out of here, before your arrival brings bad luck to my engagement."

Charles stood there, clearly angry. He was certainly unhappy that a poor man had come and ruined everything. “You don’t belong here. Hurry and leave before I call someone to drag you away.” He threatened.

Ludwig remained calm. “This terrible thing cannot be allowed to continue.”

Anger welled up inside Ludwig. How could they secretly arrange Lyra’s engagement to another man?

He had worked so hard to finish the war on time. He had left the battlefield just to fulfill the arranged marriage agreement with Lyra, but he never imagined they had played a trick on him.

Charles laughed heartily, unable to deny that he found Ludwig’s words amusing. “A terrible thing?” He repeated. The next second, his expression turned stern. “It would only be a terrible thing if Lyra married you.”

“You don’t know who I am?” Charles patted his chest arrogantly. “I am Charles White. Son of the magnificent White family.” He said it with arrogance.

This time he walked closer to Lyra. He swore she looked beautiful today. “Honey, tell him you’ll only marry me,” he said confidently.

Without hesitation, Charles put his arm around Lyra’s waist. But she quickly pushed his hand away and backed away. “I won’t marry you, Charles. I’ll only marry Ludwig.”

Previously, Lyra had reluctantly agreed to their planned engagement, thinking Ludwig wouldn’t come. But after Ludwig’s arrival, Lyra changed her mind.

She immediately walked over to her father, forgetting her fears. “Dad, let me marry Ludwig. It’s just as Grandpa said.”

Lyra recalled her grandfather’s words. Before he breathed his last breath, he had emphasized that Lyra should wait for Ludwig and marry him. That way, he would find peace in eternity.

Now that Ludwig had returned, nothing could stop Lyra’s decision. Lyra had no hesitation in marrying him.

“Are you crazy, Lyra? Even Charles is far more extraordinary!” Her father shouted angrily.

Charles clenched his fists. He moved closer to Lyra. “You will be the mistress of the White family. How could you make such a foolish decision to marry that poor man?”

Lyra ignored Charles’s words. She looked at Ludwig with conviction. “Nothing can change my decision. As I promised my grandfather, I will only marry Ludwig Harold.”

Everyone thought Lyra was crazy. But Ludwig was shocked by her firm decision. He even admired her.

Ludwig looked at Lyra. This changed his view of the Winter family. At least, Lyra was different from them. “Miss, I won’t make you regret marrying me.”

Ludwig boldly walked closer to Lyra. He looked at her closely. “So, you’re willing to marry me?”

Lyra wasn’t going to waste the opportunity. She nodded without hesitation. She had waited five years, so she wasn’t going to let her wait be in vain. “Yes, I will marry you.”
