CHAPTER 2
He woke up in a Bureau medical tent with a bandage on his chest and a woman he didn't know sitting on a folding chair beside the cot, reading his file.
"Han Jae-won," she said without looking up. "Auxiliary Response Personnel. Three years." She turned a page. "Unremarkable."
"That's what it says on the plaque," he said. His voice came out like gravel.
That made her look up. She had a narrow face, a very controlled expression, and the specific patience of someone who had spent a long time learning how not to look surprised. A lanyard hung around her neck, and on it was a badge that read KAMA, INTERNAL AFFAIRS.
"Yoon Ha-ri," she said. "Inspector. You were unconscious for six hours."
"Where's the..." Jae-won stopped. "The woman. The Bureau vest. I was carrying a..."
"She's alive."
Relief went through him so fast it hurt. "And the..." he started, and stopped, because he didn't know how to ask the question.
"The hunter who pulled her out," Ha-ri said. "Oh Se-jin. C-Class. Twenty four. He did not survive."
Jae-won lay back and stared at the canvas ceiling.
"You were the last person he spoke to," Ha-ri said.
"He didn't speak to me. He said..." Jae-won stopped again. You're... "He said one word. Then he died."
"What word?"
"Nothing. He didn't finish."
Ha-ri looked at him for a long moment. Then she closed the file and stood.
"You're cleared," she said. "Physically. Some bruising, no concussion. You can go."
She was already at the tent flap when she asked, without turning around, in a tone so casual it was obviously anything but:
"Did you know A-Class Seo Yuna?"
The tent seemed to get smaller.
"She was my fiancée," Jae-won said.
Ha-ri stood very still for a beat.
"Ah," she said. "That's what I thought." And she left.
✦
Two weeks later, the letter came.
It was the same letter he'd been receiving every year and throwing away: a standard Association notice telling him that his Latent Awakening Potential had been reassessed and that he remained, once again, insufficient for classification.
Except this year the letter had an attachment.
MANDATORY AWAKENING ASSESSMENT, SCHEDULED.
He read it four times. Then he called Sang-hoon.
"Say that again," Sang-hoon said.
"They're testing me."
"Jae-won, that's..." Sang-hoon's voice cracked. "That's amazing. Why now? Why this year? You've been what, eight, nine years of failed testing?"
"I don't know."
"You don't know? Jae-won, that's the..." Sang-hoon took an audible breath. "Okay. This is good. This is actually good. If you pass, you get out of the van. Right? No more shovels. You get paid."
"If I pass."
"You'll pass."
"I hope you're wrong."
"Jae-won."
"If I pass," Jae-won said, "they'll put me in a Zone."
Silence on the line.
"Yeah," Sang-hoon said quietly. "I know."
✦
The assessment center was a repurposed gymnasium in Yongin, and it smelled like a dentist's office.
They ran him through calibration first, machines that looked like they belonged to a different decade than the building around them. Hand on a plate. Eyes on a light. A chair that measured the resonance of whatever was inside him and printed a graph that told him nothing.
Then a Bureau handler walked him into a small white room, told him to sit, and left.
Ten minutes later a woman in an Association coat came in holding a tablet. She sat across from him. Her name tag said TECHNICIAN KWON. She did not look at him.
"Han Jae-won. Confirmation test for latent ability. If a system manifestation occurs, describe it out loud. Do not try to activate anything. Ready?"
"Sure."
She tapped the tablet.
And the air changed.
Jae-won had never felt anything like it. It was as if a hand he hadn't known he had was suddenly unclenched. Something in his chest, the same thing that had pulled at the Breach, reached out, and kept reaching, and found nothing, and came back, and reached again.
The technician's tablet chimed.
She looked at it. Her face didn't change, but her thumb stopped moving.
"Describe anything you're feeling," she said.
"It's like," Jae-won said, "there's something in here looking for something out there. And it's not finding it. So it's trying again."
The technician's thumb started moving again, fast.
The tablet chimed a second time.
「 AWAKENING CONFIRMED 」
Name: Han Jae-won
Ability: SOUL RESONANCE
Classification: F
Description: Detects residual metaphysical traces left by deceased awakened individuals within an effective radius of about 3 meters. No offensive or defensive use. No material output.
Rank Basis: Output Index 0.4 · Stability 91 · Verified Field Impact: not applicable
Note: Non-combat utility. Recommend Civilian Classification, Tier 4.
Jae-won read it three times.
"About three meters," he said.
"Yes."
"So if a dead awakener is standing right on top of me, I can tell."
"That's not quite..." The technician paused. "Yes."
"And the traces fade after death, right? How long do they last?"
"A few minutes."
"So I can sense something that stops existing before it's within three meters of me, for a few minutes, if I'm standing in exactly the right place."
The technician looked at him with something that was almost sympathy. "There are administrative uses. Retrieval confirmation. Body identification in mixed-incident sites."
"Right," Jae-won said. "Retrieval."
He took the printed certificate. It was on plain paper, which felt appropriate.
✦
He told Sang-hoon that night, in the back of the van, over convenience-store beer.
"F-Class," Jae-won said.
"F-Class utility," Sang-hoon said. "That's different."
"It's the same."
"It's not the same! F-Class combat dies in a week. F-Class utility..." Sang-hoon gestured vaguely. "You get a pension."
"I get a stipend and a locker."
"Jae-won." Sang-hoon turned to face him fully, which meant he was serious. "You're a registered awakener. Do you understand what that..."
"I'm a corpse-finder."
"You're a registered awakener. Three years in that van, and now you have a classification. That means you matter, on paper. That means you get to choose." Sang-hoon's voice had gone strange. "I've been D-Class for five years. I can lift a car and bend pipe. You want to know what that gets me? The same van. The same shovels. The same..."
He stopped.
Jae-won looked at him. "Sang-hoon."
"Nothing." Sang-hoon drank. "It's nothing. I'm happy for you. I am."
The news broke nationally the next day, because the Association published all new registrations, and because someone on the internet had a sense of humor. By evening Jae-won's classification had been screenshotted and shared twelve thousand times.
F-CLASS: SOUL RESONANCE, man who can sense dead people within 3 meters, and beneath it, the jokes.
"Finally, a class for me."
"So he's a metal detector but for corpses."
On the seventh day, a man in a Baekho Guild jacket found him at the van. Tall, twenty four, with the specific clean-cut look of somebody who had never once been left behind. Jae-won knew the face from posters.
"Han Jae-won." Kwon Tae-sung looked him up and down. "You're the one everyone's laughing at."
"Good afternoon to you too."
"I came to see for myself." Tae-sung circled him once, unhurried, like a surveyor. "Soul Resonance. You know what my class is?"
"S."
"S. Output Index 740." He stopped in front of Jae-won. His tone wasn't cruel, that was the strange part. It was curious. "They told me there was an awakener in this city who could touch the dead. I thought that might be worth something. Turns out it means you can smell them." He tilted his head. "What did you lose, exactly? That woman. The A-Class. I read about her."
Jae-won said nothing.
Tae-sung's expression flickered, something complicated, gone before Jae-won could name it.
"Be careful," Tae-sung said, and turned to go. "The people who'll want you now won't be the ones laughing."
He walked off into the rain.
Jae-won stood there for a while. Then he went home, and he slept, and he did not think about what Tae-sung had said, and at 3:41 in the morning his phone rang, and everything started.
ASSIGNMENT: Conduit-7 Site. Auxiliary Response, Tier 4. Report immediately.
He didn't know it yet, but the site was about to Breach, and he was about to be standing three meters from a dead man.

Chapter 10He didn't open the door. That was the one clear thought he had: don't open it. The phone was still on his ear, the voice still talking, pleasant and unhurried, and something in his chest was cold, not Yuna's presence, which he'd learned to feel like a hand on his shoulder, but the absence of it. An emptiness. A door he hadn't known was there, standing open in the dark."You can open it," the voice said. "Or you can run. Both are, honestly, fairly reasonable. I'm curious which you'll pick."Jae-won put the phone down, very carefully, on the table. He didn't hang up. He didn't know why he didn't hang up.The knocking came again. He went to the window. He had one window. It opened onto a fire escape that had been condemned for nine years, which meant it was the most reliable structure on the building. He got it open without a sound and swung out and went down, three stories, fast, the way he'd learned to move in rubble, and by the time his feet hit the alley, someone was enter

Chapter 9Ma Dong-chul drank at a bar under a bridge near Yongsan, and he had been drinking there for three years, which Jae-won knew because Sang-hoon had found it in about an hour, because Sang-hoon was the most useful person alive when it came to finding out where a man hid from himself. The bar was a concrete room with four tables and a sign that had lost most of its letters. Ma Dong-chul sat at the back with a bottle and a glass and the particular stillness of a man who has been waiting for someone to walk in for a long time.Han Jae-won walked in.Ma didn't look up. "A-Class Ma Dong-chul," he said, to his glass. "Ran Team Seven for nine years. Lost four people. Retired two years ago. Drink?" He pushed the bottle across without waiting for an answer. "You're Han Jae-won. You're the one who's been asking about Namsan-C.""How do you know that?""Because Ha-ri called me this morning and told me not to lie to you." Ma drank. "She's a good woman. Terrible instincts." He finally looke

Sang-hoon was at the fence when Jae-won came out. He'd brought the van."You're bleeding," he said."I'm not.""You are." Sang-hoon grabbed his arm and turned it to the light, and there was nothing there, no cut, no wound. He let go, slowly."Get in the van," Jae-won said. "Drive."✦The next week was a blur with sharp edges.Se-hee took the photographs and made copies and hid the originals in three places. Ha-ri, after Jae-won finally told her most of the truth, no voice, no resonance, just "I found a drawer and a man was there," pulled the Namsan-C incident file and found, as she said she would, inconsistencies: the report was signed by two people, one of whom had been on medical leave that week; the site survey had been done four days after the incident; and the Gate closure log had been filed from a terminal inside a building that was not a Bureau facility."Ma Dong-chul," Ha-ri said. "Your fiancée's team leader. He's the second signature.""So what, he forged it?""I don't know y

Chapter 7The photograph did not sleep.Jae-won spent three days staring at it. Blue walls. A table. A phone in the middle, exactly centered, like an altar. And the man in the corner, blurred, off center, the only thing in the frame not arranged. He ran the image through every free enhancer he could find. He took it to a print shop and had it blown up to A3 and stared at it on his kitchen floor for six hours. The man was a shape. He could have been anyone. He might not have even had the shape of a man at all. What he could see was the phone. It was an older model, the kind the Bureau had used before the last equipment refresh, a black handset with a reinforced casing. Somebody had written on it in marker. Two characters, small, in the corner of the casing. He found them the fourth time he looked at the A3 print.이.The character for the family name Lee.Also the character for reason, written alone. He sent the photo to Se-hee. Chapter 6He found her.Not on purpose. That was the thing he'd never be able to explain to anyone: that he'd spent a week trying to find a black-market information broker named Ryu Se-hee and had failed nineteen times, and then on the twentieth night he walked into a convenience store at two in the morning to buy painkillers and there she was, standing at the register with a cup of instant ramen and a black eye, arguing with the clerk about whether the microwave was broken."It's not broken," the clerk said."It's slow.""That's the same as broken, in my heart," Ryu Se-hee said, and paid. She noticed Jae-won looking. She looked back with exactly no interest for about two seconds, and then her expression changed, a flicker, gone fast, and he knew she knew who he was."You're a long way from the fan club," she said."I don't have a fan club.""You've got a hate club, which is close enough." She picked up her ramen. "Ryu Se-hee. You're Han Jae-won. I know your face from the forums. The

Recognizing her handwriting wasn't a skill he'd ever thought of as a skill. It was just something that had happened over four years of reading her notes: grocery lists on the fridge, passive-aggressive notes to the landlord, the little scrap she'd left in his jacket on the morning of the accident that said you're out of coffee, I take it back, you're handsome. He knew her handwriting the way you know a person's laugh. This was her handwriting.Four months before. If he ever hears me, don't let him trust the voice on the other side. There were three problems with the sentence and he could only hold one at a time. The first: if he ever hears me.
