Liam stared at the yellow taxi as it sped away, his heart pounding violently in his chest. His instincts screamed at him to run into the street and hail a cab to chase after the mysterious short-haired woman. If she was the one he had slept with…
He raised his right arm high, signalling any oncoming vehicle.
Just as he was looking around for a taxi, he saw a group of onlookers gathering a few feet away on the sidewalk. An elderly man in an expensive-looking suit had just collapsed on the hard ground, his skin turning an unnatural pale shade. A young woman in high-end designer clothes was crouched beside him, her face filled with absolute terror as she shook the old man's limp shoulders.
Liam looked back at the busy road. The yellow taxi carrying the mysterious woman was already merging into the traffic, rapidly disappearing from his sight. But as he looked at the unconscious elder on the pavement, his moral duty as a doctor pulled at his conscience.
Medical skills were the foundation of Liam's life. Even during the five long years he spent living as a humiliated, low-status live-in son-in-law in the wealthy Chloe family, he had never neglected his medical knowledge or dropped his clinical practice. He was a physician first, and he could never turn his back on a dying person.
Liam let out a sharp breath, lowered his raised arm, and abandoned the chase. He rushed through the gathering crowd and knelt beside the fallen old man.
"Move back and give him air! I am a doctor, let me check him," Liam said, his voice tone serious and authoritative.
The young woman turned her head instantly. Her eyes were sharp, filled with suspicion she glared at this man, wearing disheveled clothes. More than the wrinkles on his shirt, she was altered by the lines of exhaustion on his face.
"Stay back! Do not touch my grandfather!"
The woman shouted angrily. She raised her arm defensively to push Liam away. "Who do you think you are? Stay away from him!"
“Has he had any heart problems in the past? Is he diabetic? Does he carry any medication?"
"This is insane, I'm not answering personal questions from a random man on the street!" She pulled her grandfather closer, as if shielding him from a threat rather than a doctor.
Liam ignored her hostile reaction completely. He reached out with two fingers, placing them firmly on the old man's neck to check his carotid artery pulse. His pulse was extremely weak and irregular. Liam quickly bent down to inspect the elder's chest movement and clear respiratory path.
As a professional physician trained in advanced medicine, Liam recognized the severe symptoms immediately. The old man was suffering from acute myocardial infarction leading to sudden cardiogenic shock. The heart failure was causing fluid to rapidly back up into his lungs.
"His heart is failing, and his lungs are filling with fluid," Liam declared firmly. "We need to perform emergency CPR and clear his upper airway right now. If we do not act fast, he will not make it until the ambulance arrives.”
The young woman’s facial expression twisted with fury upon hearing his harsh warning. She didn't want to believe such horrible news in the first place, and his appearance was making him even more untrustworthy.
"You are talking absolute nonsense!"
The woman yelled, her voice tone dripping with anger and arrogance. "Look at you, you look like a messy drunk! You are just making up dramatic lies to cause trouble! Get your hands off him before I call the police!"
Liam kept a completely straight face, his posture steady and unyielding despite her aggressive insults. He looked her straight in the eyes with absolute seriousness.
"I am giving you a medical fact. His oxygen levels are dropping dangerously fast," Liam stated calmly. "If you do not let me perform emergency treatment on him immediately, he will start foaming at the mouth and convulsing within thirty seconds."
"Shut your filthy mouth!"
The woman screamed, growing even more agitated by his bold prediction. She wrapped her slender arms tightly around the old man's shoulders, shielding him from Liam.
"I thought you were just an awkward bystander, but now I see your true colors. You are a bitter, jealous psycho! How dare you stand there and curse my grandfather to die? He'll be completely fine. I have already dialed the emergency response center, the medical team must be coming for him right now.”
The surrounding onlookers immediately joined in, glaring at Liam with harsh disgust and hurling hostile insults.
"He wants an innocent old man to die just to prove his point! Get him out of here!"
"Call the police and have this lunatic arrested!”
Liam looked at the young woman clutching the dying elder, and he let out a heavy, tired sigh. Her blind pride was putting a human life in severe danger. However, his oath as a doctor did not allow him to stand by and watch a person die out of spite.
He shook his head and leaned forward again, preparing to forcibly pull the woman's arms away so he could begin manual chest compressions.
Before his hands could make physical contact, the old man’s body suddenly stiffened violently. The elder's eyelids fluttered wide open, his eyes rolling up toward the sky. A thick, white foam began oozing from the corners of his mouth, and his entire upper body began to convulse with intense spasms!
It was exactly thirty seconds.
The young woman’s angry facial expression instantly turned into horror. She gasped loudly as she stared at her grandfather's foaming mouth in absolute disbelief. The arrogant mask she wore was completely shattered by the terrifying reality unfolding in her arms.
"Grandfather! Grandfather, what is happening to you?!" she cried out in deep despair. She turned her tear-streaked face toward Liam, her voice tone filled with complete desperation and remorse. "Please! I beg you, save my grandfather! I was wrong! Please, save his life!"
Liam didn't waste a single second rubbing her mistake in her face. He immediately knelt into a proper medical posture, aligning his body beside the unconscious elder. He placed the heel of his hand on the center of the old man's chest and tilted the elder's head back to clear his blocked airway, getting ready to apply chest compressions to restore his circulation.
He poured all his focus into stimulating the failing heart, but because of the intense pressure, the old man's previously ashy face turned as white as a sheet of paper.
Panic claimed Cynthia’s fragile heart once again— her grandfather looked even closer to death.
She lunged forward and shoved Liam's shoulders. "What are you doing to him?! You're making it worse! You're killing him, you monster!"
Liam caught his balance, his eyes flashing.
"I'm forcing oxygenated blood into his failing ventricles. Do NOT interrupt me again. If you break this rhythm now, he will not survive the next two minutes."
The look of certainty in his eyes stunned her into silence.
Although tears of anger and fear kept streaming down her cheeks, Cynthia didn't dare to intervene again.
After counting precisely three minutes, Liam delivered one final compression before placing two fingers against the carotid artery, feeling a faint pulse returning under the skin.
Cynthia watched carefully, but her grandfather didn't show any signs of waking up. "You claimed you were a doctor, but you've only made my grandfather suffer! If anything happens to him, I swear my family will ruin you!"
Liam rose to his feet, dusting off his knees without defending himself.
He had done his duty: the cardiac arrest had been reversed, the airway was clear, and the old man was finally out of immediate danger.
Having no interest in enduring more insults, or hoping for praise, he turned on his heel.
Within seconds of that, the loud sirens of the ambulance echoed on the road as it screeched to a halt at the curb. Paramedics rushed out with a stretcher and emergency monitoring equipment.
“Please, save him!” Cynthia burst out with desperation, not noticing that in the meantime, her grandfather's spasms had settled, and the colour was slowly returning to his cheeks.
"Some reckless man on the street was just pressing on his chest, he might have ruined everything—"
The lead paramedic halted her with a stunned look as he checked the vital monitors.
"Ruined everything? Miss, whoever treated him performed a perfect emergency stabilization, clearing a fatal pulmonary blockage and restarted his heart. If they had delayed it by even one minute, your grandfather would already be dead."
On hearing these words, a cold dread washed over her, chilling her to the bone.
At first, the dominating emotion was shock, but quickly, guilt also rose its head.
She had cursed, shoved, and threatened the man who had pulled her grandfather back from the gates of death…?
"Doctor, I am so sorry for doubting you! Please, tell me your name so my family can—"
She looked around the crowd in bewilderment, because the sidewalk beside her was empty.
"Where is he...?"
She stammered, whipping her head around, suddenly realising she hadn't seen him around in the last five minutes. "Doctor! Where are you?!”

Chapter 10: The Final Argument
Liam had barely closed the door of his hotel room when he heard footsteps rushing down the hallway behind him. He turned just as Chloe's face appeared around the corner, her heels clicking frantically against the marble floor."Liam, wait!" She called out, slightly out of breath. "Can we talk about this like adults? Please!”"There is nothing left to talk about." Liam said, not bothering to hide the exhaustion in his voice. He pushed the door open and stepped inside, but she followed him in anyway, refusing to be shut out.“I know you are upset, and I see why. We both said some things we shouldn't have, and I'm sorry for accusing you like that. But you should also know that asking for a divorce right there, in front of everyone… it shocked them. I mean, it shocked me too! You shouldn't have spoken to dad in that way, it was so rude. He has always treated you well, and you repaid him by demanding money and causing a scene in our home!”Chloe complained, hoping he would empathise with
Chapter 9: The Breaking Point
Richard immediately stepped in to defend his daughter, glaring at Liam like he was slandering his little girl on purpose.“Of course it is all false!” Richard insisted loudly. “My daughter would never do such a shameful thing, this man is making up lies to destroy our family name! There is no way any of this is true!”Everyone in the room turned their eyes toward Liam. Accusations poured out from all sides.“See! Even my parents know I can't ever cheat on you, how the hell can't you see the truth, despite being married to me? Or it is because you forged those documents yourself, is that why you are insisting on it?”Chloe shouted. “Tell me the truth, Liam?”Richard agreed, “Exactly! He must have paid someone to fake the results in order to extort money from our family! How hard is that these days?”Even Grace looked at him with suspicion now.“Did you really forge the papers, Liam?” She asked in a disappointed tone, only for Richard to scoff loudly. “Do you even need to ask him? Chapter 8: Ungrateful!
Richard shouted, his hand still raised, shaking with fury. "We took you in, treated you like family! And this whole time you were just waiting for the right moment to bleed us dry?"Liam's cheek was stinging with pain, and a red mark quickly appeared on his skin. He tasted a little blood in his mouth, but didn't say a single word in his defense. He straightened without a word, locking his jaw tightly. “Got nothing to say, you damn bastard?!” Richard cursed him loudly. “How dare you come into my house and demand money from my wife and daughter? You are nothing but a low-class cattle we brought in by mistake!”He was raging like a storm, and Chloe rushed forward, panicked at his condition.“Liam, apologize to my father right now!” She spoke sharply, feeling overwhelmed at her father's outburst. He was panting and red in the face with anger, and the sight worried Chloe tremendously. “You know he's a heart patient, still you're provoking him? If something happens to my dad, who will b
Chapter 7: Money-trap!
“Grace, please try to understand. I'm not against Chloe, in fact, I'm also doing this for her own good.” Liam spoke, his voice rising with frustration. “I just can't understand, why can't she just come clean? If she really loves another man, she can just admit it and be with the person she really wants. Why do you want her to keep lying, and forcing me to raise a child that is not mine? What's the point of continuing this fake marriage?”Grace’s eyes flickered with a brief moment of doubt. She looked away for a second before answering.“I don't know what you are talking about. I truly don't know about any of this.”Then, deciding something, she picked up her phone from the table. “Chloe, come home right now,” Grace said into the phone, keeping her voice firm and urgent. “Your husband is here, and we need to talk about something important.”After ending the call, Grace dialed another number. This time, it was for her husband.“Come back to the house immediately. Something serious has
Chapter 6: Cracks in the Foundation
Grace looked down at the papers he had put on the table, and glanced at Liam with a worried expression.“What is this? And why do you look so troubled, dear?” Liam had always known Grace as a reasonable woman, who treated him with real kindness over the years. He believed she would listen carefully and help him mediate the divorce. And so, with a heavy heart, he prepared to speak the painful truth. “Grace… one of the twins is not biologically mine. You know that I have raised both girls with all my heart. But the DNA test shows that only one is biologically related to me, while the other—”“How can you say such a terrible thing!?”Grace’s face was twisted with anger as she cut him off, looking at him with disbelief. “How dare you say that about my daughter? Chloe loves you, and everyone in the family knows how devoted she is to you and the children. She even went against the family elders to marry you! Liam, you must be out of your mind to accuse her of cheating like this!”Liam fe

Liam's tone was quiet, but the bitterness bled through every word.Chloe let out a short breath, almost a laugh, but not quite. "You think those chores are worth a billion dollars? Liam, I loved you. I still love you. But this—this is not love. This is something else. You are asking for money. You are saying I owe you for everything you did around the house. That is not how a marriage works.""I turned down the exclusive offer to become the Medical Sage's personal disciple so I could stay home and cook your meals every single night," Liam said, his voice low and steady. "Do you know where his actual disciple is today? That man is a celebrity physician who only treats billionaires. He charges a million dollars for a single consultation.
