"Ahh, when the heck is it gonna end?" Mason yelled in frustration as he ran round the orphanage for the umpteenth time, trying to complete the second lap.

It has been hours since he had gotten back from the cliff and now he was trying to confirm if the system was indeed real or not. He has done the push ups and sit ups already and now he was trying to complete the hundred meter lap. But so far the system had still not displayed anything.

"So it was fake all along." Mason said with a sigh as he continued running. And just when he was about to stop and give up, he heard a ding and immediately, some few messages appeared before his eyes.

[You have completed the daily Quest]

[Complete a hundred meter run - 2 laps]✓

[Push up - 20/20]✓

[Sit up - 20/20]✓

[20 Exp has been obtain]

[Exp - 20/100]

"Wow... I...it's real!" Mason said with a laugh as he finally collapsed on the ground, trying to catch his breathe. He couldn't believe it, he had finally awakened an ability after seventeen years of age. And although he still did not understand how everything worked yet, he was happy to finally become a neohuman. And now he couldn't wait to practice and become stronger. But first things first, he needed to know what a demon truly was and how their powers worked. Only then, he felt would he be able to grow stronger. And the only way to do that was to find a book that explained about demons in the school library. And since he had missed school today, he had to wait until tomorrow.

With that thought in mind, Mason got up on his feet and walked inside, his eyes filled with nothing but joy. He had finally unlocked an ability and now he couldn't wait untill tomorrow.

////The Next Day////

Mason woke up early the next day feeling happy and excited. And after completing the daily quest, he took his bag and hurried out of the house as he headed towards Avalon school.

Avalon school was just a few blocks away from the orphanage so within a few minutes, he arrived at the school and immediately went towards the east wing where the school library was located.

There were a few kids sitting around the library when he arrived and immediately they saw him, they started whispering amongst themselves and bursted out laughing before heading outside the library.

Mason didn't need anyone to tell him why they were laughing as he had a clear picture in his head, but he choose to ignore them and walked down towards the huge shelf in front of him. Right now the only thing on his mind was getting to know what a demon was and how their powers worked.

So with that thought in mind, Mason walked towards the first shelf and search through the books there, looking for anything that might explained what a demon was. After a few seconds of searching through, he still could not find what he was looking for and moved on to the second shelf, wishing it in his mind that he'd find it here.

After going through the shelf for what felt like forever, Mason finally found three books whose titles seemed to catch his interest. The books were titled The mystery of the demon race, A demon's tale and Chronicles of demons respectively and after debating on which one to pick for a few minutes, Mason finally decided to go with the third one, the chronicles of demons.

With a firm look in his eyes, he reached out for the book and drop it on a table before running his hand over the hard cover for several seconds. After that, Mason opened the book and flipped through the old pages, hoping to find an answer to his questions. Eventually he came across a page that seemed to get his interest and stopped to read it.

"A demon's origin." Mason read aloud and could feel his heart pounding in his chest as he moved on to the next text underneath it.

"A demon is a supernatural entity with power unlike any you have ever seen. Born with the rare immortal gene, demons are able to live for thousands of years with powers like super strength, super speed, regeneration and a thousands more." Mason began to read the words with disbelief in his eyes. He had never heard of an ability that was capable of using speed, super strength and regeneration. Moreover he had never heard of an ability that made one immortal and wondered if the book was just talking gibberish or facts but nonetheless, he decided to read it to the end.

"A demon can either be created, birth or turned and their powers varies depending on how they are formed. Turned demons are less powerful compare to demons who are either created or birth. Demons who are created are more powerful than the three but a demon who is given birth to from two powerful demons can be more powerful in some cases depending on who their parents are and how powerful they are. Demons are sometimes weak to sunlight and iron and can feel their skins burn when they come across them... "

Mason paused as he read that line. Demons are weak to iron and sunlight? He asked no one in particular as he kept staring at the line. Did this mean his skin would burn if he ever touch iron? Mason wondered and paused as he saw an iron string laying besides him.

Slowly but carefully, he reached out to it and closed his eyes as he touched it, expecting the pain that would come from his skin burning. But to his surprise, nothing happened.

Mason took a deep breath as he removed his hand from the iron string. Thankfully, iron had no reaction to him yet and he hoped it would stay that way.

Mason then continued to read the book and eventually stopped when he heard the bell ring, indicating that it was time for the school break. He looked at the time and saw that it was twelve noon, which meant he had spent four hours in the library.

Satisfied by what he had read so far, Mason closed the book and returned it back to where he had taken it from. And as he made to leave, Mason heard a familiar ding sound.

[You've gained more knowledge about the system]

[10 Exp Obtained]

[Exp - 50/100]

"What is this?" Mason asked as he stared at the blue screen in front of him. It seemed he gained exp the more he learned about the system even though he did not know the usefulness of it.

"I hope it's something useful." Mason mumbled as he walked out of the library and headed down towards the cafeteria.

On his way there, a punch from nowhere landed on his face, throwing him down on the ground as blood drip from his nose.

Mason looked up to see who it was, only to discover Drake towering above him with a wicked grin on his face.

"Did you think I'd let you go after that stun you pulled?" Drake said coldly as his eyes glowed. Mason on the other hand couldn't help but clenched his fist tightly as he felt anger ripping through his veins. He was tired of being looked down upon, of been bullied by Drake every single day. He was tired of it all and could endure it no longer.

As Mason thought that in his head, a few messages popped up before his eyes.

[The system has sensed your hostility towards the opponent]

[You have been granted a quest]

[Defeat the opponent who is one level above you]

[Reward - 50 exp]

[Punishment - Lost of the system]

As the message appeared before his eyes, Mason knew immediately, that he had to defeat Drake by all means or lose his ability.

  • Night Has Come

In the long hours leading up to midnight, Mason stood before the broad mirror, dressed in a black suit that complemented the mask on his face. [Intermediate Gauntlets Equipped]The system announced, and Mason took a deep breath as he examined the gauntlets that had now appeared on his arms. Like the previous ones, the intermediate gauntlets were red in color and identical to the basic ones he'd just lost - with the only difference being the significant boost in defense and attack—two times more than what the basic ones had to offer. However, as he kept staring at them, Mason wondered if they'd be enough for what lay ahead tonight. His last gauntlets had been damaged by Carl Wallace's intense punches, after their intense battle at the Dead Grounds. And as night approached, something told him he'd be facing even more formidable opponents than Carl Wallace tonight. "I guess we have to see about that," Mason thought as he took another deep breath, before walking towards the open window

  • A Dreamwalker

"And that just about covers everything," Maya said after she had finished explaining her dreams to Aunt Vanessa and the woman whose name she still didn't know yet."So let me get this straight, you said you started having these dreams after meeting Jasper and Mason, correct?" Aunt Vanessa asked with a serious expression, and Maya nodded."And these boys, what are they?" Maya hesitated for a while as Aunt Vanessa asked the question, wondering why she had even asked it in the first place or what it had to do with the dreams she was having. But when she thought of the terrible dream she'd had and her reason for being here, Maya decided to tell her everything."Jasper is an original, from the house of Vaughn," she began and took a deep breath as Aunt Vanessa raised a brow."As for Mason... Well, it's hard to explain.""I'm a witch, Maya, trust me, I can handle hard. So just take your time and tell me everything. The more detailed it is, the better," Aunt Vanessa assured her, and Maya nodd

  • A Witch

"Welcome home, Maya. We've been waiting for you," Aunt Vanessa said with a warm smile, and Maya found herself staring in surprise."You were expecting me?" Maya asked, her voice laced with shock and confusion. How on earth could they have expected her to come if she had told no one she was coming? Or had her dad told them she was coming after she had left home? Maya wondered, but quickly decided to leave it at that and move on to the more important task at hand."My dad told me I could find you here. Please, I need your help, Aunty. Something's happening to me, and I can't explain it," Maya added, hoping Aunt Vanessa could provide some answers. But Aunt Vanessa just stood there, taking a quick, piercing stare at her. "The eyes of a newborn. I see. You've just awakened," she said with a knowing smile and Maya cocked a brow, confused. "What?""Come on in, Maya. Like I said, we've been waiting for you," Aunt Vanessa said, stepping aside to let Maya enter."Waiting for me? What do you mea

  • Finding Vanessa

Mr. Freyborn stood at the edge of his balcony, gazing up at the stars in the night sky as the sound of passing vehicles hummed through the streets. It was 8 pm now - an hour since Maya had left for Cole City, headed to her aunt's place in search of answers. And as Mr. Freyborn stood there, gazing up at the stars, he wished she'd find the answers she sought."Please, Martha—please watch over our little girl," Mr. Freyborn whispered under his breath, gazing up at the stars as a single tear rolled down his cheek. He knew exactly what Maya was and the kind of answers she'd find where she was headed. He had prayed every single day of his life that this day would never come, and that she'd never awaken to her true nature. His wife had done all she could to shield Maya from this life, allowing her to live a normal life, but it appeared fate had other plans. He could only wish now that the heavens would watch over his daughter and protect her from all harm. As her journey from here on out was

"Here, drink this. It will help with the headache," Mr. Freyborn said, handing Maya a cup of yellow tea as she sat on her bed. Maya took the cup and gulped down the tea, feeling it burn her palate like a smooth flame. Warmth spread through her body, all the way down her chest, and a few seconds later, her headache disappeared, as if it was never there."What is it?" Maya asked, returning the cup. The tea tasted different from any other tea she'd had. It was sour and bitter, but worked like magic. And she could feel her body buzzing with energy."It's Namal tea, a specialty of your grandma's," Mr. Freyborn replied. "Your mom taught me how to make it several years ago."Maya smiled at the mention of her mom's name. Ever since they'd lost her, her dad rarely spoke about her, leaving Maya wondering if he still hadn't gotten over her death. But after all these years, she was happy he was finally talking about her."I miss her too, Dad," Maya said, staring at her mom's portrait beside her b

"What are you talking about, Maya? What do you mean by 'we are all going to die'?" Mason asked as he settled on the bed beside her, wondering what she meant by that. Everyone else had their eyes on her, curious about why she was suddenly saying that."I... I had a dream, Mason, and in that dream, I saw you and Jasper die," Maya said with fear in her voice and Mason could swear he could smell it on her body."Like you said, Maya, it's just a dream," Mason said, and Jasper nodded from where he sat."He's right, Maya, it's just a dream. Nothing bad is going to happen to us, okay?""You don't understand, okay? It's not just a dream," Maya snapped with fear in her voice and immediately broke down to crying."I've been getting these dreams lately, and I fear they are not just ordinary dreams. They feel more real than you can imagine, and I fear it might turn out to be true, and... and then, I might lose you two," Maya explained as more tears flowed down her eyes and Mason wondered if this w
