The door chime of the Crimson Bean didn't just ring; it seemed to resonate with a low, thrumming hum that made Felix’s teeth ache. As he stepped over the threshold, a man emerged from the shadows of the back office. He wasn't the barista. He was a tall, angular man in a charcoal suit that looked like it had been tailored for an undertaker, his gaze sharp enough to peel paint.

This was Inquisitor Vance, the Hunter Guild’s premier interrogator. He didn't look at the coffee menu. He looked directly at Felix’s jugular.

"Serena," Vance said, his voice a cold, smooth rasp. "You’re late. And you’ve brought a guest."

Felix wiped his thumb on his jeans, oblivious to the fact that the man in front of him was currently cataloging the most efficient way to disassemble a human skeleton. "Oh, hey. Sorry for the intrusion. I’m just walking my roommate to her shift. And, man, you guys really need to look at your front lighting. It’s flickering like a horror movie set, and the awning is absolutely covered in grime. It’s bad for business."

Vance’s eyes widened, then narrowed into slits of pure, frozen contempt. He took a predatory step forward. "Excuse me?"

Serena surged forward, nearly tripping over her own boots. She threw herself between Felix and the Inquisitor, her palms pressed against Vance’s chest in a desperate bid to keep him from incinerating the room.

"Inquisitor! Wait!" Serena squeaked, her face a frantic shade of crimson. "He’s... he’s a specialist! A civilian asset! I’ve been conducting a deep-dive investigation into the local infrastructure to see why our... uh... 'customer flow' has been flagging!"

"A civilian asset?" Vance repeated, his voice dripping with ice. He looked past her at Felix, who was currently tapping his fingernails against the counter, clearly unimpressed by the establishment's decor. "He’s a critic, Wilde. And a bold one at that."

Felix didn't seem to notice the tension. He leaned in, pointing at a streak of dust on the counter. "Look, I’m not trying to be a jerk, but this place has potential. You’ve got the layout, you’ve got the location, but the vibe? It’s completely off. It feels like a funeral parlor that happens to serve beans. If you’re not going to scrub the awning, you’re never going to get the lunch rush. It’s just basic retail logic."

Vance’s face twitched. A vein pulsed visibly in his temple. "You are... critiquing my operations?"

"I’m just saying," Felix shrugged, leaning back. "My intern gig is in graphic design and marketing analysis. I see stuff like this all day. It’s honestly painful to walk past. You’ve got a prime spot here, and you’re wasting it on bad lighting and a grumpy manager."

"A grumpy manager," Vance whispered, his voice trembling with a rage that would have vaporized a lesser man. "Is that what you call Commander Valerius?"

"Is that her name?" Felix looked over at the counter, where Valerius was currently staring at him with such murderous intensity that she was accidentally crushing a porcelain milk pitcher in her grip. "Tell her to lighten up. It’s just coffee, not a military deployment. Though, honestly, with this 'Red and Black' color scheme, she’s really leaning into the whole goth-chic aesthetic, isn't she?"

Serena felt her soul leaving her body. She grabbed Felix’s elbow, tugging him back toward the door. "Felix! We have to go! I think the... the pressure gauge on the boiler is acting up! It’s dangerous!"

Vance reached out, his hand snapping out like a viper to catch the edge of the counter. His eyes were locked on Felix, dark, calculating, and hungry. "No. Let him stay. I find his 'expertise' to be... illuminating."

Felix blinked, finally sensing that something was off. "You know, you’re all a bit intense for a Tuesday morning. Is there something in the water here? Do you guys not get enough vitamin D?"

"We get plenty of... exposure," Vance said, stepping around Serena. He moved with a grace that was entirely too smooth to be human. He stopped directly in front of Felix, peering down at him. "You have such unique perspectives on... structural integrity, Mr. Knight. Tell me, do you also have opinions on things that are harder to see? Like the foundations of this building? The history of this district?"

Felix laughed, a sound so genuinely confused and lighthearted that it threw Vance off balance. "Dude, I just moved in. I’m just trying to pay my rent and not get evicted by my landlord, who I’m ninety percent sure is a literal demon in a polyester suit. I don't have time for history lessons."

Vance went deathly silent. His eyes flickered to Serena, who looked like she was about to faint. "A literal demon?"

"Yeah," Felix waved a hand dismissively. "Grimaldi. You’ve probably seen him. Ash-gray skin, terrible combover, smells like cheap cigars and sulfur. He tried to double my rent because the pipes leaked. Total nightmare. Honestly, if you guys are having trouble with the 'vibe' here, you should be glad you’re not renting from him. He’s the real threat to business in this sector."

Vance leaned in, his voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper. "You’ve confronted Grimaldi?"

"I dragged him to the Tenant Union and shoved a contract in his face," Felix said, sounding proud. "He ran off like a scared puppy. Guy’s all bark and no bite if you know the municipal codes."

Serena felt like she was watching a horror movie where the protagonist was walking barefoot through a minefield and complaining about the quality of the sand. She jumped in, her voice shrill. "He’s a health inspector! He didn't mean to imply anything! It’s all part of the... the audit!"

"An audit," Vance repeated, his eyes never leaving Felix.

"Yeah, an audit," Felix agreed, oblivious to the fact that he was currently being psychoanalyzed by a man whose job description involved 'exorcism by any means necessary.' "And I’m telling you, you’ve got a massive leak in your customer service department. If I were you, I’d take the awning down, get some track lighting, and maybe fire the guy in the trench coat who keeps staring at me. He’s making the space feel crowded."

Vance turned his head, spotting 'Dead-Eye' Thompson, who immediately hid behind a menu.

Vance let out a slow, sharp breath. He looked back at Felix, a strange, twisted smile playing on his lips. "You have a remarkable way of looking at things, Mr. Knight. You strip away the facade and find the rot beneath. It is a rare talent."

"It’s called common sense," Felix replied, checking his watch. "Anyway, I really gotta go. I’ve got an internship, and apparently, my boss thinks 'punctuality' is a requirement for my employment, not a suggestion."

Felix turned to head for the door, but Vance stepped into his path, his presence suddenly filling the room like a physical weight.

"Before you go," Vance said, his voice smooth as glass, "I find myself... intrigued by your criticisms. You have such an eye for structural flaws. My business has been struggling with a very specific, very deep-seated 'pest' problem in the storage area. It has been incredibly difficult for us to... reach the root of the issue."

Serena froze. "Inquisitor, no—"

Vance ignored her, his eyes fixed on Felix. "Since you are so adept at finding rot, perhaps you would like to inspect the back room? I would appreciate a second opinion. A fresh set of eyes, as it were."

Felix paused, scratching his cheek. He looked at the door, then back at the dark, narrow hallway leading toward the back office. "I mean... I’m probably going to be late. But if you’ve got a genuine pest problem, I used to help my uncle with his warehouse. I might be able to tell you if it’s a leak or a foundation issue."

Serena felt the room tilt. He’s inviting him into the inner sanctum. The kill room. The place where they keep the blessed silver chains and the abyssal fire pits.

"Felix, don't," Serena grabbed his sleeve, her voice trembling. "It’s... it’s not safe back there. It’s a health code violation waiting to happen!"

"It’s just a back room, Serena," Felix said, patting her hand, his expression softening into that warm, annoying, perfect smile that made her want to weep. "Relax. If he’s got a problem, I’ll help him out. It’ll take five minutes. Then you can finish your shift, and I’ll get that bagel."

Vance bowed slightly, a gesture that was entirely too formal for a manager of a coffee shop. "A brief inspection. I promise it will be... life-changing."

Felix grinned and started walking toward the back. "Don't hold your breath, but let's take a look. If it’s black mold, you’re in for a rough time, buddy."

As Felix disappeared into the gloom of the back room, Vance turned to Serena. The humor had vanished from his face, replaced by a cold, sharp, and utterly terrifying intensity.

"Wilde," he hissed, his voice like the blade of a guillotine. "If he survives the inspection, you are going to tell me exactly how you managed to domesticate an Abyssal Horror. And if he doesn't..."

He left the rest unsaid and followed Felix into the darkness.

Serena stood alone in the cafe, her hands shaking so hard she had to grip the espresso machine for support. She looked at the door he had entered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Oh, Felix," she whispered to the empty, shadowed hallway. "You have no idea what you've just walked into. And I have no idea how I'm going to explain that you're just... a guy who really, really hates bad lighting."

She grabbed a damp rag and began to scrub the counter, her mind racing. She had to get in there. She had to protect him. But as the chime of the door signaled another customer—a hunter with a heavy, enchanted case—she realized the truth.

Felix didn't need her protection. He was currently critiquing the Inquisitor’s choice of floor sealant.

"I'm going to be the first person in history," she muttered, her eyes wet as she looked toward the back room, "to fall in love with the most dangerous man in the city because he’s a clean-freak who likes pizza."

She looked at the espresso machine, then at the back door.

"Time to see if track lighting can save a soul," she whispered, and ran toward the back.

  • Chapter 9: Walking the Path of Shadows

The morning sun crawled through the gaping hole where the apartment door used to be, illuminating a glittering cloud of plaster dust that refused to settle. Felix groaned, blinking his eyes open as the hard wooden armrest of the futon dug into his neck. He shifted, realizing his hand was still firmly entwined with Serena’s.She was already awake, hunched over her tactical smartphone, her thumbs blurring across the screen with aggressive precision."Seriously, Serena? It’s six in the morning," Felix croaked, his voice thick with sleep. "Are you still texting about the 'Hollowed Blood' goths? Give it a rest. They’re probably all at home nursing their garlic allergies by now."Serena jumped, nearly dropping her phone. She quickly locked the screen, her face flushing a guilty pink. "I... I am merely documenting the structural vulnerabilities of the sanctum, Felix! My superiors require a full report on the... the 'construction hazards' you navigated last night.""Your theater professors so

"Seriously, Serena, how am I supposed to sleep when my entryway looks like a construction zone?" Felix groaned, leaning heavily on the wooden handle of his broom as he pushed a small pile of white drywall dust toward the threshold. "I just wanted to sweep up this mess so we don't track plaster dust all over the carpet. Is that really too much to ask on a Tuesday night?"Serena, sitting cross-legged on the edge of the futon with her knees pulled tightly to her chest, stared at him with wide, unblinking green eyes. "You shouldn't let your guard down, Felix. The forces of the night are devious. They do not simply retreat because you ask them to. They are likely regrouping, calculating your spiritual pressure, and preparing a counter-offensive.""They're theater students in matching leather jackets, Serena," Felix said, let out a long, exhausted sigh. "The only thing they're calculating is how much they spent on hair gel. Besides, they ruined my welcome mat. That was a housewarming gift f

  • Chapter 7: Unwelcome Neighbors

"Felix," Serena said, stepping in front of him, her body coiled like a spring, her grip white-knuckled on the kitchen knife. "I believe the rent just went up."Felix stood frozen for a heartbeat, his eyes fixed on the black, viscous liquid seeping under the doorframe. It hissed against the wood, a faint, acrid smell of ozone and wet rot filling the tiny apartment."Is that... hydraulic fluid?" Felix asked, his brow furrowed in genuine annoyance. "I swear, if this is Grimaldi trying to cheap out on the hallway renovations again, I am going to lose my mind. That stuff is going to ruin the floorboards."Serena’s jaw tightened. Hydraulic fluid? The Reborn Master is truly a master of misdirection. He calls the ichor of the undead 'hydraulic fluid' to mock the encroaching darkness. He is so calm it’s terrifying."Felix, get back," she hissed, her voice low and dangerous. "Those aren't maintenance workers. They’re leeches. Predators of the night. If they’ve breached the outer ward, it means

  • Chapter 6: The Venom of Kindness

The steam from the ramen bowl swirled in the cramped room, carrying with it a scent so warm and inviting that Serena felt her resolve fraying at the edges. She watched Felix move with a casual grace, his movements unburdened by the weight of malice she had spent her life learning to fear."Here you go," Felix said, turning around with a tray. He placed two steaming mugs of chamomile tea down and a small ceramic plate piled high with golden-brown cookies. "Sorry it’s not exactly gourmet, but I figured you could use something sweet after that whole incident with the pipes."Serena stared at the plate. The cookies were thick, studded with semi-melted pools of dark chocolate, and still warm enough to make the air around them shimmer."You baked these?" she asked, her voice tight."Yeah, took a tray out right before the ceiling started leaking," Felix said, pulling up a wooden stool. "I’m a bit of a stress-baker. It helps me focus when I’m dealing with... well, everything."Stress-baking,

"Please, Lord Knight!" Serena gasped, suddenly dropping to her knees. Her tactical boots made a wet squelch against the rug as she bowed her head, the white towel draped over her shoulders like a ceremonial cloak. "Accept me as your disciple! I swear to carry out your dark will without hesitation!"Felix nearly dropped his mug. "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Get up off the floor! It's still wet down there, and honestly, I don't think my landlord has swept under the radiator in twenty years.""I will not rise until you grant me sanctuary!" Serena insisted, her eyes wide with desperate resolve. She stared up at him, her heart beating like a trapped bird. "I am but a humble apprentice. I have been cast out by my guild—the High Order of... of Dramatic Arts! They have stripped me of my lodge, and my master has declared me a rogue initiate. If you do not take me in, the forces of the High Council will hunt me down and purge my registry!"Felix blinked, his brain straining to process the sheer volume of
