The morning sun crawled through the gaping hole where the apartment door used to be, illuminating a glittering cloud of plaster dust that refused to settle. Felix groaned, blinking his eyes open as the hard wooden armrest of the futon dug into his neck. He shifted, realizing his hand was still firmly entwined with Serena’s.

She was already awake, hunched over her tactical smartphone, her thumbs blurring across the screen with aggressive precision.

"Seriously, Serena? It’s six in the morning," Felix croaked, his voice thick with sleep. "Are you still texting about the 'Hollowed Blood' goths? Give it a rest. They’re probably all at home nursing their garlic allergies by now."

Serena jumped, nearly dropping her phone. She quickly locked the screen, her face flushing a guilty pink. "I... I am merely documenting the structural vulnerabilities of the sanctum, Felix! My superiors require a full report on the... the 'construction hazards' you navigated last night."

"Your theater professors sound like real slave-drivers," Felix sighed, sitting up and rubbing his face. He looked at the floor, where a singular, dried pepperoni from the 'Divine Pizza' was stuck to a floorboard. "Man, what a mess. Look, you’re still shaking. You’ve been staring at that screen like it’s a bomb about to go off."

"It is a heavy burden, being the messenger of such... cosmic events," Serena whispered, looking at him with those wide, intense green eyes.

"Right. Well, 'cosmic events' don't pay the bills, and they definitely don't keep you safe on the subway," Felix said, standing up and stretching until his spine popped. He grabbed his worn denim jacket from the chair. "What time is your shift at that cafe?"

"Seven hundred hours," Serena said automatically. "I mean, seven. In the morning."

"Okay, I’m walking you."

Serena’s heart skipped a beat, and not in the romantic way. "What? No! Absolutely not! The Master must remain within the primary ward! It is far too dangerous for you to venture into the neutral zones!"

"Master? Serena, we talked about this. I’m just Felix," he said, grabbing his keys. "And 'neutral zones'? You mean the street? It’s two blocks away. Besides, after those leather-jacket creeps showed up last night, there’s no way I’m letting you wander around alone. This neighborhood is getting weirder by the hour."

"Felix, please, I am a trained—" she stopped, biting her lip. "I am a very capable waitress! I can handle myself!"

"I don’t care if you’re a black belt in latte-making," Felix said, holding out his hand for her to get up. "I’m your roommate. It’s my job to make sure you get to your part-time gig without getting harassed by more theater rejects. Now, put your boots on. We’re going."

Serena stared at his outstretched hand, her mind racing at a thousand miles per hour. If the Reborn Master sets foot inside the Crimson Bean... if he touches the perimeter wards of the Hunter Guild HQ... the automated defense turrets will vaporize the entire block! I have to redirect him! I have to distract him!

"But... the coffee!" she stammered, scrambling to her feet. "Don't you want coffee first? I can brew some! I can... I can find some beans!"

"We’ll get coffee at your place," Felix laughed, gently nudging her toward the door. "Isn't that the point of working at a cafe? Come on, let's move."

The morning fog was thick and gray, clinging to the brick buildings like a damp shroud. Felix walked with his hands in his pockets, glancing occasionally at Serena, who was vibrating with such high-strung energy he thought she might actually hover off the pavement.

"So, what’s the vibe of this 'Crimson Bean' place?" Felix asked, trying to break the tension. "Is it one of those pretentious spots where a small espresso costs eight dollars and they play experimental jazz?"

"It is... a place of great vigilance," Serena said, her eyes scanning every rooftop and alleyway they passed. "The staff is highly disciplined. We focus on... quality control. And threat assessment."

"Threat assessment? For a coffee order?" Felix chuckled. "Man, you theater kids really commit to the bit. 'Is that soy milk a Level 4 biohazard? I must consult the manager!'"

"You mock it, but the wrong ingredient can be fatal," Serena muttered, her hand twitching near her empty dagger holster.

"I guess you're right. A nut allergy is no joke," Felix said, his voice softening. He noticed her flinching at a passing pigeon. He reached over, bumping his shoulder against hers. "Hey. Relax. I'm right here. Nobody's going to jump out of a dumpster and start a monologue at you."

Serena looked up at him, her breath hitching. In the gray morning light, Felix looked... devastating. His dark hair was messy from sleep, and the way he smiled at her—so casual, so protective—made her feel a strange, liquid warmth in her chest that was far more dangerous than any vampire.

"You are very... persistent in your kindness, Felix," she whispered.

"It's not persistence, it's just how people are supposed to be," Felix replied. "Anyway, I like the walk. It gives me time to think about how I’m going to explain that broken door to Grimaldi. I’ll probably tell him a localized windstorm hit the fourth floor."

"A windstorm of demonic proportions," Serena agreed.

"Sure, let’s go with that. He’ll probably believe it. The man thinks the boiler is haunted."

They turned a corner, and the 'Crimson Bean Cafe' came into view. To any normal person, it was a quaint, red-painted storefront with a chalkboard sign out front. To Serena, it was a fortress bristling with hidden mana-sensitive Gatling guns and silver-lined reinforced glass.

"There it is," Serena said, her voice trembling. "The sanctum. You can stop here, Felix! Really! The perimeter is secure!"

"Nonsense, I want to see you get inside," Felix said, stepping onto the sidewalk in front of the shop. "And I'm serious about that bagel. I’m starving."

"Felix, wait! The door! It has... it has a very complex locking mechanism!"

"It says 'Pull', Serena," Felix said, reaching for the brass handle.

"No! Don't touch the—!"

Click.

The door swung open smoothly. Serena braced herself, waiting for the high-frequency alarm that signaled a Class-S entity had breached the ward. She waited for the ceiling-mounted darts to fly. She waited for the ground to open up.

Nothing happened.

The bells above the door chimed a cheerful, melodic ting-a-ling. The air inside smelled of roasted arabica and expensive floor wax.

Felix stepped inside, looking around with an unimpressed squint. "Huh. It’s actually pretty nice. A bit heavy on the 'Red and Black' aesthetic, but the chairs look comfortable."

Serena stood frozen on the threshold, her jaw nearly hitting the floor. The wards... they didn't even ripple. He’s suppressed his aura so perfectly that the Ancient Detection Array thinks he’s a common civilian. His control is... it’s god-like.

"You coming in, or are you going to stand there and catch flies?" Felix asked, turning back to her with a grin.

"I... I am coming," Serena squeaked, scurrying inside.

The cafe was mostly empty, save for a few "customers" who were actually high-ranking hunters in plain clothes, reading newspapers that were actually tactical maps. Every single one of them froze the moment Felix walked in. They didn't look up, but Serena could feel the collective tension in the room, the way hands slowly drifted toward concealed weapons beneath the tables.

"Welcome to the Crimson Bean," a cold, sharp voice rang out from the back.

A tall, imposing woman stepped out from behind the espresso machine. She wore a crisp black vest over a white shirt, her gray hair pulled back into a bun so tight it looked painful. Her eyes were like chips of blue ice, and she held a portafilter like it was a mace.

Serena turned pale. Commander Valerius. The head of the Regional Hunter Division. She’s working the counter?!

"Oh, hey," Felix said, walking right up to the counter and leaning against it. "Are you the manager? Your sign says you have a breakfast special."

Valerius stared at Felix, her gaze searching for any sign of the abyssal energy the reports had mentioned. She saw nothing but a tired young man with a grease stain on his cuff and a friendly, slightly goofy smile.

"I am the proprietor," Valerius said, her voice dropping an octave. She glanced at Serena, her eyes flashing a silent, terrifying question: Is this him?

Serena gave a tiny, frantic nod, her face pleading for mercy.

"Cool," Felix said, oblivious to the silent communication. "Can I get a plain bagel, toasted, with extra cream cheese? And whatever the strongest coffee you have is. My roommate here had a rough night with some theater goths, so maybe give her whatever she usually drinks on the house?"

Valerius looked from Felix to Serena, her grip tightening on the counter. "Theater... goths?"

"Yeah, they were doing some weird immersive performance piece in our hallway. Broke the door and everything," Felix said, shaking his head. "Anyway, Serena’s a great worker, I’m sure. Just wanted to make sure she got here safe."

"I see," Valerius said, her voice trailing off as she analyzed Felix's "threat level." He is treating a Guild Commander like a barista. He is asking for a bagel in the heart of our operations. The sheer, ballsy arrogance of this creature...

"Is something wrong?" Felix asked, tilting his head. "You’re staring at me kind of weird. Is the bagel machine broken?"

"The bagel... is functional," Valerius said through gritted teeth. "Serena. Get behind the counter. Now."

"Yes, Commander—I mean, Ma'am! Right away!" Serena scrambled into the staff area, her heart pounding against her ribs.

Felix leaned over the counter, whispering to Serena as she passed. "The boss seems a bit intense, huh? Don't worry, she’s probably just a morning person. I’ll be at the corner table."

"Felix, please, just take the bagel and go!" Serena hissed.

"I will, I will! Relax," Felix laughed.

He turned and walked toward a small table in the corner, passing a man in a trench coat who was actually the city’s top sniper. Felix accidentally bumped the man's chair.

"Oops, sorry about that, man," Felix said, patting the sniper on the shoulder. "Nice coat. Very 'noir'."

The sniper turned white as a sheet, his hand trembling as he clutched his coffee mug.

Serena watched from behind the espresso machine, her soul practically leaving her body. He just touched the 'Dead-Eye' Thompson. He just petted a Master Assassin like he was a golden retriever. We are all going to die. We are all going to die today.

"Serena," Valerius whispered, leaning in close as she began to aggressively steam milk. "Explain. Why is the Reborn Master eating a bagel in my lobby?"

"He... he insisted on walking me, Commander!" Serena whispered back, her voice shaking. "He thinks this is a normal cafe! He thinks you’re just a grumpy manager!"

"He is mocking us," Valerius hissed, the steam wand shrieking. "He is sitting there, chewing his cream cheese, waiting for us to make a move. He’s showing us that our fortress is nothing but a snack bar to him."

"I don't think he's waiting for anything, Commander," Serena said, looking at Felix.

Felix was currently trying to catch a drip of cream cheese with his napkin, looking genuinely frustrated that it had landed on his thumb. He caught Serena’s gaze and gave her a small, encouraging thumbs-up and a wink.

Serena’s heart did a violent, complicated somersault.

"He’s... he’s just being a roommate," Serena murmured, her face heating up.

"He is a Class-S threat, Wilde! Do not let his symmetrical face and casual demeanor deceive you!" Valerius snapped. "We stay in 'Passive Observation' mode. If he orders a second bagel, we initiate 'Red Protocol'."

"Understood," Serena sighed, reaching for a coffee cup.

She looked back at Felix, who was now happily scrolling through his phone, looking for all the world like a normal, handsome guy starting his day. And for a brief, delusional second, Serena wished he actually was.

Then she remembered the 'Solar Disc of Alchemy' (the pizza) from the night before and sighed. No. He’s definitely a Dark Lord. A Dark Lord who really, really likes breakfast.*

He didn't look at the coffee menu. He looked directly at Felix’s jugular."Serena," Vance said, his voice a cold, smooth rasp. "You’re late. And you’ve brought a guest."Felix wiped his thumb on his jeans, oblivious to the fact that the man in front of him was currently cataloging the most efficient way to disassemble a human skeleton. "Oh, hey. Sorry for the intrusion. I’m just walking my roommate to her shift. And, man, you guys really need to look at your front lighting. "Seriously, Serena, how am I supposed to sleep when my entryway looks like a construction zone?" Felix groaned, leaning heavily on the wooden handle of his broom as he pushed a small pile of white drywall dust toward the threshold. "I just wanted to sweep up this mess so we don't track plaster dust all over the carpet. Is that really too much to ask on a Tuesday night?"Serena, sitting cross-legged on the edge of the futon with her knees pulled tightly to her chest, stared at him with wide, unblinking green eyes. "You shouldn't let your guard down, Felix. The forces of the night are devious. They do not simply retreat because you ask them to. They are likely regrouping, calculating your spiritual pressure, and preparing a counter-offensive.""They're theater students in matching leather jackets, Serena," Felix said, let out a long, exhausted sigh. "The only thing they're calculating is how much they spent on hair gel. Besides, they ruined my welcome mat. That was a housewarming gift f

"Felix," Serena said, stepping in front of him, her body coiled like a spring, her grip white-knuckled on the kitchen knife. "I believe the rent just went up."Felix stood frozen for a heartbeat, his eyes fixed on the black, viscous liquid seeping under the doorframe. It hissed against the wood, a faint, acrid smell of ozone and wet rot filling the tiny apartment."Is that... hydraulic fluid?" Felix asked, his brow furrowed in genuine annoyance. "I swear, if this is Grimaldi trying to cheap out on the hallway renovations again, I am going to lose my mind. That stuff is going to ruin the floorboards."Serena’s jaw tightened. Hydraulic fluid? The Reborn Master is truly a master of misdirection. He calls the ichor of the undead 'hydraulic fluid' to mock the encroaching darkness. He is so calm it’s terrifying."Felix, get back," she hissed, her voice low and dangerous. "Those aren't maintenance workers. They’re leeches. Predators of the night. If they’ve breached the outer ward, it means

  • Chapter 6: The Venom of Kindness

The steam from the ramen bowl swirled in the cramped room, carrying with it a scent so warm and inviting that Serena felt her resolve fraying at the edges. She watched Felix move with a casual grace, his movements unburdened by the weight of malice she had spent her life learning to fear."Here you go," Felix said, turning around with a tray. He placed two steaming mugs of chamomile tea down and a small ceramic plate piled high with golden-brown cookies. "Sorry it’s not exactly gourmet, but I figured you could use something sweet after that whole incident with the pipes."Serena stared at the plate. The cookies were thick, studded with semi-melted pools of dark chocolate, and still warm enough to make the air around them shimmer."You baked these?" she asked, her voice tight."Yeah, took a tray out right before the ceiling started leaking," Felix said, pulling up a wooden stool. "I’m a bit of a stress-baker. It helps me focus when I’m dealing with... well, everything."Stress-baking,

"Please, Lord Knight!" Serena gasped, suddenly dropping to her knees. Her tactical boots made a wet squelch against the rug as she bowed her head, the white towel draped over her shoulders like a ceremonial cloak. "Accept me as your disciple! I swear to carry out your dark will without hesitation!"Felix nearly dropped his mug. "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Get up off the floor! It's still wet down there, and honestly, I don't think my landlord has swept under the radiator in twenty years.""I will not rise until you grant me sanctuary!" Serena insisted, her eyes wide with desperate resolve. She stared up at him, her heart beating like a trapped bird. "I am but a humble apprentice. I have been cast out by my guild—the High Order of... of Dramatic Arts! They have stripped me of my lodge, and my master has declared me a rogue initiate. If you do not take me in, the forces of the High Council will hunt me down and purge my registry!"Felix blinked, his brain straining to process the sheer volume of
