"The void?" Felix repeated, squinting at Serena as she lay completely immobilized in his bathtub. "Like... outer space? Or are you talking about some weird cult stuff?"

"Do not play innocent with me, dark lord," Serena hissed, trying to wriggle, only for the tactical wire to tighten further around her ribs. "I know what you are. I saw the violet cataclysm!"

"Yeah, and I saw a crazy lady crash through my window," Felix sighed, leaning over the tub. "Look, hold still. Let me see if I can get this wire off you. It’s really wrapped around your arms."

"Don't touch me! Your corruptive touch will—"

"And... there," Felix said.

With a quick, practiced twist of his fingers, he located the release buckle of the tactical line, clicked it open, and slipped the heavy loop over her shoulders. The wire instantly slacked, pooling harmlessly around her chest.

Serena blinked in utter shock, her breath catching in her throat. "How... how did you do that? That is a high-grade, military-lock binding! It requires a specific frequency key to release!"

"I was in the Boy Scouts," Felix said proudly, wiping a smudge of rust from his forehead. "Troop 402. Mr. Henderson made us practice untying knots in the dark while he threw cold water at us. Honestly, your fancy little cord is nothing compared to wet hemp rope."

Serena’s jaw tightened, her heart hammering against her ribs. Troop 402... a secret order of shadow-binding acolytes. And this 'Mr. Henderson' must be a high-tier demon lord who trains his disciples through brutal elemental torture. The scale of this conspiracy is horrifying!

"You..." Serena stammered, scrambling to sit up in the tub, her wet tactical boots squeaking loudly against the porcelain. "You speak of these horrors so casually."

"Horrors? Boy Scouts is mostly just selling cookies and learning how to build a camp fire," Felix said, offering her his hand again. "Are you going to get out of there or what?"

Serena stared at his hand. His fingers were long, his palm calloused but clean. He is offering me a hand up. Is this a test of my submission? If I refuse, will he unleash the wrath of Troop 402 upon my soul?

"I can stand on my own," she said defensively.

She attempted to plant her wet boots on the soapy, slick floor of the bathroom, but her knees immediately wobbled.

"Whoa, easy!" Felix caught her by the elbows, stabilizing her before she could crash back down.

Their chests brushed, and Serena’s breath hitched. Up close, his dark eyes had a soft, concerned warmth that made absolutely no sense for a harborer of the apocalypse. He smelled like lavender laundry soap, fresh rain, and copper. It was a dizzying, oddly pleasant combination.

"Thank... thank you," she whispered, her face burning.

"Don't worry about it," Felix said, quickly letting go and scratching the back of his neck, his own cheeks flushing a light pink. "But seriously, you’re shivering. You’re soaking wet."

"A true warrior of the light does not care about physical discomfort," Serena declared, though her teeth immediately chattered right after. Ch-ch-ch.

Felix chuckled, shaking his head. "Yeah, sure. Hold on a second."

He walked out of the bathroom and returned a moment later carrying a fluffy, pristine white towel. He handed it to her. "Here. Wrap yourself in this. It's actually warm. I just pulled it out of the dryer before my plumbing decided to go nuclear."

Serena accepted the towel gingerly. The moment her fingers touched the fabric, a wave of soothing, perfectly distributed heat washed over her body. Her eyes widened. He... he didn't use a dryer. I didn't hear a dryer running. He channeled high-precision thermal fire magic directly into the cotton fibers without leaving a single singe mark! To control heat with such delicate precision... he could easily incinerate my entire guild with a blink.

"It's... incredibly warm," Serena whispered, wrapping it tightly around her shoulders.

"Right? Best feeling in the world," Felix said, smiling warmly. "Anyway, you must be pretty desperate to drop in like this."

Serena froze, the towel clutched tightly to her chest. Desperate? He knows! He knows the Hunter Guild is desperate to stop his resurrection! He is mocking our entire organization!

"We... we did what we had to do," Serena said, her voice trembling slightly as she tried to maintain her fierce warrior gaze. "We detected your presence. We couldn't just stand by and let you gather power."

"Detected my presence?" Felix groaned, tossing his hands in the air. "Was my music really that loud? I swear, I only played two songs! And they weren't even heavy metal! It was just some lo-fi beats to unpack to!"

Lo-fi beats... Serena thought, her mind racing. An ancient, rhythmic chanting used to attune his dark soul to this dimension. He calls it 'music' to mock my ignorance!

"You call it what you want," Serena said, narrowing her eyes. "But we know the truth. You cannot hide your true power forever."

"Lady, my only power is surviving on cup ramen and sleeping four hours a night," Felix said, sighing as he looked at the shattered glass on his bathroom floor. "And now I've got a broken window. Which, by the way, you said you could pay for?"

"Yes," Serena said quickly, wanting to keep him pacified. "The Guild... I mean, I have funds. Standard tactical compensation."

"Great, because my landlord, Mr. Grimaldi, will literally evict me if he sees this. He's a nightmare."

Grimaldi... another high-ranking demon of the lower realms, Serena noted mentally. The network of evil in this building is vast.

"I will transfer the currency to you," Serena said, nodding solemnly. "Just... name your price. I will pay whatever is required to settle this debt."

"I don't know, a hundred bucks? Maybe a hundred and fifty for labor?" Felix shrugged. "Let's figure it out in the kitchen. Do you want to discuss the terms of your stay over a hot beverage?"

Serena’s heart skipped a beat. The terms of my stay... over a hot beverage? He’s offering a blood pact! A negotiation for my life! If I refuse, he will likely dissolve me into the abyss!

"A... hot beverage," Serena repeated, her throat dry.

"Yeah, I've got chamomile tea or instant coffee," Felix said, walking out of the bathroom and gesturing for her to follow. "Chamomile is probably better. You look like you're about to have a panic attack. Seriously, you're vibrating."

"I am not vibrating! It is a high-frequency combat readiness stance!" Serena protested, though she quickly followed him into the small, cramped main room of the studio.

"Sure, whatever you say, combat girl," Felix chuckled, setting a small, cheap plastic electric kettle on his tiny counter. "So, chamomile?"

"Chamomile," Serena whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs as she watched him pour water into the kettle. He is preparing the elixir. I must remain vigilant. If he tries to slip a mind-control curse into the tea, I will... I will...

She looked at his back. He was humming a little tune, his broad shoulders moving slightly as he set out two mismatched mugs. He looked so normal. So incredibly, frustratingly normal. And handsome.

No! Serena scolded herself, squeezing her eyes shut. Do not fall for his illusion! He is a Class-S threat! He is the Reborn Master! He just defeated me without even trying!

"Hey, are you okay over there?" Felix asked, turning around and leaning against the counter. "You're doing that intense staring thing again."

"I am analyzing my opponent," Serena said defensively.

"I'm not your opponent, I'm your host," Felix said, a soft, amused smile playing on his lips. "Though, I gotta admit, you're the most interesting guest I've ever had. Usually, people just knock on the door, they don't crash through the window like a tactical ninja."

"I am a licensed high-rank Hunter!" Serena snapped, her pride slightly wounded. "I do not 'crash.' It was a calculated entry!"

"Right, a calculated entry that ended with you slipping on rusty water and landing in my bathtub," Felix teased, his eyes sparkling with amusement.

Serena’s face flushed an even deeper shade of red. "That was... an environmental hazard! The layout of your ritual chamber was modified!"

"Sure, blame the bathroom," Felix laughed.

The kettle began to hiss, steam rising from the spout. Serena watched the steam, her nerves winding tighter and tighter. The moment of negotiation was arriving. She had to play her cards perfectly to survive this encounter.

"So," Felix said, pouring the hot water into the mugs and sliding one toward her. "About those 'terms of your stay'..."

Suddenly, a violent, heavy vibration rattled the entire front door.

BAM! BAM! BAM!

The cheap wooden door groaned on its hinges.

Both Felix and Serena froze instantly, their eyes locking onto the trembling door.

The door chime of the Crimson Bean didn't just ring; it seemed to resonate with a low, thrumming hum that made Felix’s teeth ache. As he stepped over the threshold, a man emerged from the shadows of the back office. He wasn't the barista. He was a tall, angular man in a charcoal suit that looked like it had been tailored for an undertaker, his gaze sharp enough to peel paint. This was Inquisitor Vance, the Hunter Guild’s premier interrogator. He didn't look at the coffee menu. He looked directly at Felix’s jugular."Serena," Vance said, his voice a cold, smooth rasp. "You’re late. And you’ve brought a guest."Felix wiped his thumb on his jeans, oblivious to the fact that the man in front of him was currently cataloging the most efficient way to disassemble a human skeleton. "Oh, hey. Sorry for the intrusion. I’m just walking my roommate to her shift. And, man, you guys really need to look at your front lighting. It’s flickering like a horror movie set, and the awning is absolutely cov

The morning sun crawled through the gaping hole where the apartment door used to be, illuminating a glittering cloud of plaster dust that refused to settle. Felix groaned, blinking his eyes open as the hard wooden armrest of the futon dug into his neck. He shifted, realizing his hand was still firmly entwined with Serena’s.She was already awake, hunched over her tactical smartphone, her thumbs blurring across the screen with aggressive precision."Seriously, Serena? It’s six in the morning," Felix croaked, his voice thick with sleep. "Are you still texting about the 'Hollowed Blood' goths? Give it a rest. They’re probably all at home nursing their garlic allergies by now."Serena jumped, nearly dropping her phone. She quickly locked the screen, her face flushing a guilty pink. "I... I am merely documenting the structural vulnerabilities of the sanctum, Felix! My superiors require a full report on the... the 'construction hazards' you navigated last night.""Your theater professors so

  • Chapter 8: The Legend of the Broom

"Seriously, Serena, how am I supposed to sleep when my entryway looks like a construction zone?" Felix groaned, leaning heavily on the wooden handle of his broom as he pushed a small pile of white drywall dust toward the threshold. "I just wanted to sweep up this mess so we don't track plaster dust all over the carpet. Is that really too much to ask on a Tuesday night?"Serena, sitting cross-legged on the edge of the futon with her knees pulled tightly to her chest, stared at him with wide, unblinking green eyes. "You shouldn't let your guard down, Felix. The forces of the night are devious. They do not simply retreat because you ask them to. They are likely regrouping, calculating your spiritual pressure, and preparing a counter-offensive.""They're theater students in matching leather jackets, Serena," Felix said, let out a long, exhausted sigh. "The only thing they're calculating is how much they spent on hair gel. Besides, they ruined my welcome mat. That was a housewarming gift f

  • Chapter 7: Unwelcome Neighbors

"Felix," Serena said, stepping in front of him, her body coiled like a spring, her grip white-knuckled on the kitchen knife. "I believe the rent just went up."Felix stood frozen for a heartbeat, his eyes fixed on the black, viscous liquid seeping under the doorframe. It hissed against the wood, a faint, acrid smell of ozone and wet rot filling the tiny apartment."Is that... hydraulic fluid?" Felix asked, his brow furrowed in genuine annoyance. "I swear, if this is Grimaldi trying to cheap out on the hallway renovations again, I am going to lose my mind. That stuff is going to ruin the floorboards."Serena’s jaw tightened. Hydraulic fluid? The Reborn Master is truly a master of misdirection. He calls the ichor of the undead 'hydraulic fluid' to mock the encroaching darkness. He is so calm it’s terrifying."Felix, get back," she hissed, her voice low and dangerous. "Those aren't maintenance workers. They’re leeches. Predators of the night. If they’ve breached the outer ward, it means

  • Chapter 6: The Venom of Kindness

The steam from the ramen bowl swirled in the cramped room, carrying with it a scent so warm and inviting that Serena felt her resolve fraying at the edges. She watched Felix move with a casual grace, his movements unburdened by the weight of malice she had spent her life learning to fear."Here you go," Felix said, turning around with a tray. He placed two steaming mugs of chamomile tea down and a small ceramic plate piled high with golden-brown cookies. "Sorry it’s not exactly gourmet, but I figured you could use something sweet after that whole incident with the pipes."Serena stared at the plate. The cookies were thick, studded with semi-melted pools of dark chocolate, and still warm enough to make the air around them shimmer."You baked these?" she asked, her voice tight."Yeah, took a tray out right before the ceiling started leaking," Felix said, pulling up a wooden stool. "I’m a bit of a stress-baker. It helps me focus when I’m dealing with... well, everything."Stress-baking,

  • Chapter 5: The Undercover Apprentice

"Please, Lord Knight!" Serena gasped, suddenly dropping to her knees. Her tactical boots made a wet squelch against the rug as she bowed her head, the white towel draped over her shoulders like a ceremonial cloak. "Accept me as your disciple! I swear to carry out your dark will without hesitation!"Felix nearly dropped his mug. "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Get up off the floor! It's still wet down there, and honestly, I don't think my landlord has swept under the radiator in twenty years.""I will not rise until you grant me sanctuary!" Serena insisted, her eyes wide with desperate resolve. She stared up at him, her heart beating like a trapped bird. "I am but a humble apprentice. I have been cast out by my guild—the High Order of... of Dramatic Arts! They have stripped me of my lodge, and my master has declared me a rogue initiate. If you do not take me in, the forces of the High Council will hunt me down and purge my registry!"Felix blinked, his brain straining to process the sheer volume of
