"Felix, wait!" Serena hissed, her voice a tense whisper as she gripped her wet towel. "Do not open that portal! The dark vibrations... they are suffocating. It is an executioner of the underworld!"

"It's just my landlord, Serena," Felix said, walking past her. "And he's not an executioner. He's just a seventy-year-old guy who refuses to update the building's boiler."

"That is his mortal guise!" Serena pleaded, stumbling after him, her wet boots squeaking on the hardwood. "I can smell the sulfur from here! He is a high-ranking Archdemon!"

"That's just his cheap cologne and stale cigar smoke," Felix muttered, turning the brass doorknob. "Trust me, I deal with guys like him all the time."

Felix yanked the door open.

Standing in the dimly lit hallway was a hulking, broad-shouldered man stuffed into a cheap, double-breasted polyester suit. His skin had a bizarre, ash-gray tint, his hairline was a terrible, desperate combover that failed to hide two distinct, bony ridges on his forehead, and his eyes glowed with a faint, angry yellow light.

"Knight!" the man roared, his voice sounding like two tectonic plates grinding together. "What is the meaning of this?! I felt a massive shockwave in the ley lines of this sector! Did you rupture the abyssal flow?!"

"Oh, you mean the plumbing you neglected?" Felix said, crossing his arms and leaning against the doorframe. "The valve under my bathroom sink literally disintegrated in my hands, Mr. Grimaldi. The whole place was flooded with red rust."

Mr. Grimaldi—known in the lower realms as Brimstone the Defiler—narrowed his glowing eyes, his gaze shifting past Felix to the shivering Serena wrapped in a towel.

"Ah! I see you have already taken a hostage for your dark rituals!" Brimstone sneered, pointing a thick, gray finger at her. "But do not think your reborn status excuses you from the rules of this domain, Reborn Master! Because of your unauthorized magical resonance and the destruction of my property, your rent is doubled! Effective immediately!"

"Doubling my rent?" Felix's eyes went wide. "Are you kidding me right now? I literally moved in thirty minutes ago!"

"The Abyssal Covenant is subject to change under supernatural zoning laws!" Brimstone bellowed, taking a step forward, a faint wisp of real black smoke escaping his nostrils. "Pay me one hundred and twenty dollars by tomorrow, or face immediate eviction to the fiery depths of the street!"

From behind Felix, Serena gasped, her eyes wide with terror. He is threatening the Reborn Master with a high-tier demonic eviction curse! The sheer audacity of this Archdemon!

Felix, however, did not look terrified. He looked incredibly, deeply annoyed.

"Supernatural zoning laws? A covenant?" Felix let out a dry, sarcastic laugh. "Hold on. Don't move."

Felix turned, marched over to his half-unpacked cardboard box, and dug around for a few seconds. He emerged holding a slightly crumpled, stapled packet of papers. He marched back to the door and shoved the papers directly into Brimstone’s face.

"What is this?!" Brimstone hissed, flinching back as if the paper were coated in holy water. "What sorcery do you brandish, mortal?!"

"It's the standard city residential lease agreement we both signed yesterday," Felix said, his voice dropping into a cold, unyielding monotone. "And I suggest you look very closely at page three."

Brimstone stared at the paper, his yellow eyes blinking in confusion. "This... this is..."

"Section 4B," Felix declared, pointing a sharp, accusatory finger at a paragraph of tiny black text. "Read it and weep, Grimaldi. 'The landlord shall be held strictly liable for any and all structural, utility, and plumbing failures not caused by tenant negligence. Furthermore, any failure to address emergency maintenance within twenty-four hours constitutes a material breach of contract.'"

Serena’s jaw dropped. She stared at the paper, then at Felix’s fierce, commanding posture. He... he is invoking a binding sovereign decree! Look at how the Archdemon cowers before the written runes of Section 4B!

"This... this cannot be!" Brimstone stammered, sweat beginning to bead on his ash-gray forehead. "A binding contract of the high municipal court? You dare bind me with such absolute authority?!"

"You're damn right I dare!" Felix snapped, stepping closer, completely ignoring the faint smell of sulfur. "I have a video of the rusty water exploding out of the wall. If you try to charge me a single penny over sixty dollars, I am taking this contract straight to the Tenant Union."

Brimstone gasped, taking a panicked step back into the hallway. "The... the Tenant Union?! The Grand Conclave of Unyielding Retribution?!"

"Yeah, the Tenant Union," Felix said, narrowing his eyes. "And they don't play around with slumlords like you. They will fine you so hard your ancestors will feel it. They'll put a lien on this entire building, Grimaldi. You'll lose your precious property."

A lien on my domain?! Brimstone’s mind raced in pure, unadulterated terror. He has the backing of the Grand Conclave! If they intervene, my soul-harvesting operation in this building will be utterly liquidated! The Reborn Master’s authority is absolute... he binds even the laws of the mortal realm to his whim!

"Please! Lord Knight!" Brimstone stammered, his tough exterior completely crumbling. He raised his hands in a defensive gesture, his voice shaking. "Let us not involve the High Union! There is no need for such... extreme legal measures!"

"Then what about the double rent?" Felix asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Forgiven! Waived!" Brimstone cried frantically. "In fact, to compensate for the... the material breach of Section 4B, your rent for this month is entirely free! Free!"

"And my window?" Felix pointed toward the bathroom. "And the broken valve?"

"I shall send my most skilled... contractors! First thing in the morning!" Brimstone promised, bowing his head in submission. "They shall restore the barriers! They shall fix the portal! Just... I beg of you, do not unleash the wrath of the Union upon my lineage!"

"Fine," Felix said, sighing and lowering the papers. "See that you do. And don't knock on my door like that again. It's bad for my blood pressure."

"Yes, Lord Knight! Immediately, Lord Knight!" Brimstone squeaked.

Without another word, the massive, hulking landlord turned on his heel and practically sprinted down the narrow, trash-strewn hallway, his cheap leather shoes squeaking in terror until he disappeared down the stairwell.

Felix let out a heavy sigh, closing the door with a loud click and locking it. He leaned his back against the wood, rubbing his temples.

"Man, I hate corrupt slumlords," Felix muttered to himself. "You really have to know your rights in this city, or they'll walk all over you."

He turned around, only to find Serena staring at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated awe. She was still wrapped in the warm towel, her cheeks flushed, her eyes wide as she looked at him as if he had just parted the red sea.

"You..." Serena whispered, her voice trembling. "You just defeated a high-rank Archdemon of the lower realms... with a single scroll of municipal binding."

"I told you, it's just a lease," Felix said, walking back to the kitchen counter and picking up his mug of chamomile tea. "Though, I gotta admit, I didn't think he'd fold that fast. Usually, guys like Grimaldi try to argue for at least ten minutes before they waive the fees."

"He did not just fold," Serena said, taking a slow, cautious step toward him. "You completely stripped him of his authority. You threatened his very domain with the 'Tenant Union.' The sheer strategic brilliance of your execution..."

She stared at Felix’s calm, handsome face. He was casually sipping his tea, looking entirely unbothered by the fact that he had just dominated an ancient force of evil.

He is too powerful, Serena realized, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. I cannot defeat him. If I try to strike him down, he will simply pull out another legal scroll and bind my soul to a contract of eternal torment. The Hunter Guild is completely outmatched.

She looked at his broad shoulders, his dark, messy hair, and the gentle, almost adorable way he blew on his hot tea. A strange, electric warmth spread through her chest.

If I cannot defeat him from the outside... I must infiltrate his inner circle, she thought, her inner monologue turning fierce and determined. Yes! I will pretend to submit to his dark will. I will become his loyal servant, live by his side, study his habits, and find his weakness. It is the only way to save humanity.

"Felix," Serena said, her voice turning soft, almost submissive. She took another step forward, letting the towel slip slightly off her shoulders to reveal her collarbone.

"Yeah?" Felix asked, looking up from his mug.

"I see now that my strength is nothing compared to your absolute sovereignty," she said, bowing her head deeply. "I... I wish to offer you my services."

Felix blinked, nearly choking on his tea. "Your... services? What do you mean?"

"I shall be your loyal servant," Serena declared, looking up at him through her eyelashes, her heart racing as she tried to play the part of a dedicated acolyte. "I will assist you in guarding this sanctum. I will help you enforce the sacred laws of Section 4B against the corrupt forces of Grimaldi. In exchange, I only ask that you allow me to reside here... as your roommate."

Felix stared at her, completely flabbergasted. "Wait, you want to move in? Here? In a sixty-square-foot studio?"

"Yes," Serena said, nodding solemnly. "I shall pay whatever tribute... I mean, rent, you require. I can split the sixty dollars with you. I will pay thirty dollars monthly."

Felix's jaw worked silently for a moment. He looked around the tiny, messy apartment, then back to the stunning, ridiculously athletic girl standing in his kitchen wrapped in a towel, offering to pay half his rent.

"I mean..." Felix scratched the back of his neck, his cheeks turning a distinct shade of pink. "Thirty bucks is thirty bucks. And honestly, having someone to help split the bills would make my internship a lot easier. But... where are you going to sleep? There's only one bed."

Serena’s face instantly exploded into a deep, vibrant crimson. The... the one-bed trial! she screamed internally. He is already testing my resolve! He wants me to share his primary ritual chamber!

"I... I am a highly trained warrior!" Serena stammered, her voice squeaking slightly as she tried to maintain her composure. "I can sleep on the floor! Or... or the bathtub! The rusty tub was actually quite comfortable!"

Felix let out a loud, genuine laugh, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "You're a weird girl, Serena. You know that, right?"

"I am not weird! I am highly tactical!" she protested, her heart doing a frantic flip at the sound of his laugh.

"Sure, whatever you say, combat girl," Felix smiled, sliding the second mug of chamomile tea toward her. "Welcome to apartment 4B. Let's get you some dry clothes first."

The door chime of the Crimson Bean didn't just ring; it seemed to resonate with a low, thrumming hum that made Felix’s teeth ache. As he stepped over the threshold, a man emerged from the shadows of the back office. He wasn't the barista. He was a tall, angular man in a charcoal suit that looked like it had been tailored for an undertaker, his gaze sharp enough to peel paint. This was Inquisitor Vance, the Hunter Guild’s premier interrogator. He didn't look at the coffee menu. He looked directly at Felix’s jugular."Serena," Vance said, his voice a cold, smooth rasp. "You’re late. And you’ve brought a guest."Felix wiped his thumb on his jeans, oblivious to the fact that the man in front of him was currently cataloging the most efficient way to disassemble a human skeleton. "Oh, hey. Sorry for the intrusion. I’m just walking my roommate to her shift. And, man, you guys really need to look at your front lighting. It’s flickering like a horror movie set, and the awning is absolutely cov

The morning sun crawled through the gaping hole where the apartment door used to be, illuminating a glittering cloud of plaster dust that refused to settle. Felix groaned, blinking his eyes open as the hard wooden armrest of the futon dug into his neck. He shifted, realizing his hand was still firmly entwined with Serena’s.She was already awake, hunched over her tactical smartphone, her thumbs blurring across the screen with aggressive precision."Seriously, Serena? It’s six in the morning," Felix croaked, his voice thick with sleep. "Are you still texting about the 'Hollowed Blood' goths? Give it a rest. They’re probably all at home nursing their garlic allergies by now."Serena jumped, nearly dropping her phone. She quickly locked the screen, her face flushing a guilty pink. "I... I am merely documenting the structural vulnerabilities of the sanctum, Felix! My superiors require a full report on the... the 'construction hazards' you navigated last night.""Your theater professors so

"Seriously, Serena, how am I supposed to sleep when my entryway looks like a construction zone?" Felix groaned, leaning heavily on the wooden handle of his broom as he pushed a small pile of white drywall dust toward the threshold. "I just wanted to sweep up this mess so we don't track plaster dust all over the carpet. Is that really too much to ask on a Tuesday night?"Serena, sitting cross-legged on the edge of the futon with her knees pulled tightly to her chest, stared at him with wide, unblinking green eyes. "You shouldn't let your guard down, Felix. The forces of the night are devious. They do not simply retreat because you ask them to. They are likely regrouping, calculating your spiritual pressure, and preparing a counter-offensive.""They're theater students in matching leather jackets, Serena," Felix said, let out a long, exhausted sigh. "The only thing they're calculating is how much they spent on hair gel. Besides, they ruined my welcome mat. That was a housewarming gift f

  • Chapter 7: Unwelcome Neighbors

"Felix," Serena said, stepping in front of him, her body coiled like a spring, her grip white-knuckled on the kitchen knife. "I believe the rent just went up."Felix stood frozen for a heartbeat, his eyes fixed on the black, viscous liquid seeping under the doorframe. It hissed against the wood, a faint, acrid smell of ozone and wet rot filling the tiny apartment."Is that... hydraulic fluid?" Felix asked, his brow furrowed in genuine annoyance. "I swear, if this is Grimaldi trying to cheap out on the hallway renovations again, I am going to lose my mind. That stuff is going to ruin the floorboards."Serena’s jaw tightened. Hydraulic fluid? The Reborn Master is truly a master of misdirection. He calls the ichor of the undead 'hydraulic fluid' to mock the encroaching darkness. He is so calm it’s terrifying."Felix, get back," she hissed, her voice low and dangerous. "Those aren't maintenance workers. They’re leeches. Predators of the night. If they’ve breached the outer ward, it means

  • Chapter 6: The Venom of Kindness

The steam from the ramen bowl swirled in the cramped room, carrying with it a scent so warm and inviting that Serena felt her resolve fraying at the edges. She watched Felix move with a casual grace, his movements unburdened by the weight of malice she had spent her life learning to fear."Here you go," Felix said, turning around with a tray. He placed two steaming mugs of chamomile tea down and a small ceramic plate piled high with golden-brown cookies. "Sorry it’s not exactly gourmet, but I figured you could use something sweet after that whole incident with the pipes."Serena stared at the plate. The cookies were thick, studded with semi-melted pools of dark chocolate, and still warm enough to make the air around them shimmer."You baked these?" she asked, her voice tight."Yeah, took a tray out right before the ceiling started leaking," Felix said, pulling up a wooden stool. "I’m a bit of a stress-baker. It helps me focus when I’m dealing with... well, everything."Stress-baking,

"Please, Lord Knight!" Serena gasped, suddenly dropping to her knees. Her tactical boots made a wet squelch against the rug as she bowed her head, the white towel draped over her shoulders like a ceremonial cloak. "Accept me as your disciple! I swear to carry out your dark will without hesitation!"Felix nearly dropped his mug. "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Get up off the floor! It's still wet down there, and honestly, I don't think my landlord has swept under the radiator in twenty years.""I will not rise until you grant me sanctuary!" Serena insisted, her eyes wide with desperate resolve. She stared up at him, her heart beating like a trapped bird. "I am but a humble apprentice. I have been cast out by my guild—the High Order of... of Dramatic Arts! They have stripped me of my lodge, and my master has declared me a rogue initiate. If you do not take me in, the forces of the High Council will hunt me down and purge my registry!"Felix blinked, his brain straining to process the sheer volume of
