The steam from the ramen bowl swirled in the cramped room, carrying with it a scent so warm and inviting that Serena felt her resolve fraying at the edges. She watched Felix move with a casual grace, his movements unburdened by the weight of malice she had spent her life learning to fear.

"Here you go," Felix said, turning around with a tray. He placed two steaming mugs of chamomile tea down and a small ceramic plate piled high with golden-brown cookies. "Sorry it’s not exactly gourmet, but I figured you could use something sweet after that whole incident with the pipes."

Serena stared at the plate. The cookies were thick, studded with semi-melted pools of dark chocolate, and still warm enough to make the air around them shimmer.

"You baked these?" she asked, her voice tight.

"Yeah, took a tray out right before the ceiling started leaking," Felix said, pulling up a wooden stool. "I’m a bit of a stress-baker. It helps me focus when I’m dealing with... well, everything."

Stress-baking, Serena thought, her heart hammering against her ribs. A ritual to transmute negative energy into solid form. He’s taking the chaos of his environment and locking it into these circular vessels of sugar. It’s genius. It’s terrifying.

She shifted, sliding her hand into her tactical vest. Beneath the fabric, her hunter detection ring—a delicate silver band—pressed against her skin. She twisted the dial, silently activating its arcane scan. She needed to know what was in that tea. She needed to know what kind of curse he had brewed.

The ring pulsed once, twice, and then flared a vivid, violent crimson against her finger.

A high-lethal toxin warning, she concluded, her breath hitching. The liquid is radiating pure, boiling malevolence. The intensity is off the charts.

"Everything okay?" Felix asked, his head tilted slightly, an expression of genuine concern etched onto his face. "You look like you’re ready to jump out of your skin again."

"I am merely... assessing the composition of the elixir," Serena said, her voice strained.

"It's just tea, Serena. Chamomile. Relax," Felix chuckled, picking up his own mug.

Relax? she screamed internally. He wants me to lower my guard so the poison can take root!

She picked up the mug, her knuckles white. She looked at Felix, who was waiting for her to take the first sip with a look of soft, expectant warmth. He looked so hopeful, so painfully human. If she didn't drink, he would know she had discovered the truth. She had to show him that the Warden of the Sanctum was not so easily defeated.

She raised the mug to her lips and took a long, defiant swallow.

The liquid hit her tongue like molten lava.

"Ah—"

Her eyes watered instantly. The heat was searing, burning its way down her throat, but she didn't flinch. She set the mug down with a firm clack and forced a tight, pained smile onto her face.

"Exquisite," she managed to choke out, her voice raspy. "A truly... aggressive infusion."

Felix frowned, leaning forward. "Whoa, careful, I think I let it steep too long. You okay? Your face is turning bright red."

"It is... part of the training," Serena gasped, her tongue feeling like it had been scorched by dragon fire. "One must acclimate to extreme temperatures to endure the... the battlefield."

"You theater students are seriously hardcore," Felix laughed, shaking his head. He reached for a cookie, breaking it in half. The center was gooey, stretching in a long, perfect ribbon of melted chocolate. "Here, try one of these. I used the good dark chocolate chunks."

Serena hesitated. The ring on her finger pulsed a steady, warning red. The cookies are even more saturated with the toxic essence than the tea, she realized. The dark magic is concentrated in the dough.

She took the cookie, her fingers trembling. She brought it to her lips, expecting the bitter tang of sulfur or the metallic sting of blood. She took a small, careful bite.

The moment the chocolate touched her tongue, her world tilted.

It wasn't ash. It wasn't despair.

It was soft, buttery, and intensely rich. A wave of warmth hit her—not the heat of the boiling tea, but a deep, comforting ache that felt like a long-forgotten memory. It reminded her of the rare, quiet moments she had stolen away as a child, hidden in the back of the academy library, dreaming of a life that didn't involve daggers or blood.

Her throat tightened. A single, hot tear escaped her eye and traced a path through the faint smudge of soot on her cheek.

"Hey," Felix said, his voice dropping. He reached out, his hand hovering uncertainly before gently brushing the tear away with his thumb. "Serena? What's wrong? Is it that bad? I can throw them out if you don't like them."

Serena looked at him, her vision blurry. The 'Reborn Master' was sitting there, looking worried because she was crying over a cookie. The absurdity of it, the sheer, crushing loneliness of her life as a hunter, and the unexpected softness of this moment crashed into her all at once.

"It’s not bad," she whispered, her voice cracking. "It’s... it’s just..."

"Too much?" he asked, his thumb still lingering near her cheekbone, his skin warm and grounding.

"I have never..." She stopped, closing her eyes as she took another shaky breath. "I have never tasted something that didn't come from a ration pack or a mess hall. It’s just very... kind."

Felix went quiet. He pulled his hand back, his own cheeks turning a light, dusty pink. He looked down at the floor, then back at her, his eyes shining with a strange, shy tenderness.

"Well," he said softly. "I'm glad you think so. You can have as many as you want. I’m not exactly going to finish them all by myself."

Serena took another bite, the sweet, gooey chocolate helping to soothe the burn on her tongue. She felt the tension in her shoulders finally start to evaporate. Maybe the poison isn't meant to kill, she thought, confused. Maybe it’s meant to make me dependent on his presence. He is turning me into a thrall, one cookie at a time.

"You are a very dangerous man, Felix," she murmured, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand.

"Dangerous? Because I bake?" Felix grinned, the amusement returning to his face. "You really need to get out more, combat girl. I'm just a guy with an oven and a lot of free time."

"You underestimate your influence," Serena said, looking at him properly now. Without the filter of her paranoia, he just looked... beautiful. The golden light of the small apartment lamp caught the stray hairs falling over his forehead, and she felt that familiar, dangerous electric hum in her chest. "The way you manipulate the elements of... flour and sugar... it is quite profound."

"You're weird," he said again, but his voice was soft, lingering on the word. He reached across the small space and picked up his own cookie, bumping his hand gently against hers. "But you're a good roommate."

Serena felt her heart stop. Roommate. It was the label she had chosen, the mission parameters she had set, but hearing him say it made her feel something far more complicated than duty.

"I will do my best to uphold the status," she said, her voice steadying.

Just as Felix was about to respond, the air in the room seemed to vibrate.

CRASH.

The sound echoed up from the hallway below, a violent, metallic shriek that sounded like a heavy steel door being ripped off its hinges. It was followed immediately by a series of low, guttural growls that didn't sound human, or even animal. They sounded like the earth itself was cracking open.

Felix stood up instantly, his brow furrowing as he looked toward the door. "What in the hell was that? Is Grimaldi moving furniture at midnight again?"

Serena was on her feet a second later, her hand instinctively moving to her hip, though she had no daggers. Her eyes narrowed, the 'theater student' facade falling away to reveal the cold, lethal focus of a hunter.

"That was not a door, Felix," she whispered, her voice dropping into a dangerous, sharpened edge. "And those are not the sounds of a landlord."

Another crash rocked the building, closer this time, accompanied by the distinct sound of claws scraping against the drywall.

"Stay behind me," Serena ordered, grabbing a sturdy kitchen knife from the counter, her knuckles white.

"Wait, what? Why are you grabbing the kitchen knife? It’s probably just a stray dog or—"

Felix stopped. A dark, viscous shadow was beginning to bleed under the cracks of his apartment door, smelling strongly of ozone and rot.

"Felix," Serena said, stepping in front of him, her body coiled like a spring. "I believe the rent just went up."

He shifted, realizing his hand was still firmly entwined with Serena’s.She was already awake, hunched over her tactical smartphone, her thumbs blurring across the screen with aggressive precision."Seriously, Serena? It’s six in the morning," Felix croaked, his voice thick with sleep. "Are you still texting about the 'Hollowed Blood' goths? Give it a rest. They’re probably all at home nursing their garlic allergies by now."Serena jumped, nearly dropping her phone. She quickly locked the screen, her face flushing a guilty pink. "I... I am merely documenting the structural vulnerabilities of the sanctum, Felix! My superiors require a full report on the... the 'construction hazards' you navigated last night.""Your theater professors so

"Seriously, Serena, how am I supposed to sleep when my entryway looks like a construction zone?" Felix groaned, leaning heavily on the wooden handle of his broom as he pushed a small pile of white drywall dust toward the threshold. "I just wanted to sweep up this mess so we don't track plaster dust all over the carpet. Is that really too much to ask on a Tuesday night?"Serena, sitting cross-legged on the edge of the futon with her knees pulled tightly to her chest, stared at him with wide, unblinking green eyes. "You shouldn't let your guard down, Felix. The forces of the night are devious. They do not simply retreat because you ask them to. They are likely regrouping, calculating your spiritual pressure, and preparing a counter-offensive.""They're theater students in matching leather jackets, Serena," Felix said, let out a long, exhausted sigh. "The only thing they're calculating is how much they spent on hair gel. Besides, they ruined my welcome mat. That was a housewarming gift f

It hissed against the wood, a faint, acrid smell of ozone and wet rot filling the tiny apartment."Is that... hydraulic fluid?" Felix asked, his brow furrowed in genuine annoyance. "I swear, if this is Grimaldi trying to cheap out on the hallway renovations again, I am going to lose my mind. That stuff is going to ruin the floorboards."Serena’s jaw tightened. Hydraulic fluid? The Reborn Master is truly a master of misdirection. He calls the ichor of the undead 'hydraulic fluid' to mock the encroaching darkness. He is so calm it’s terrifying."Felix, get back," she hissed, her voice low and dangerous. "Those aren't maintenance workers. They’re leeches. Predators of the night. Her tactical boots made a wet squelch against the rug as she bowed her head, the white towel draped over her shoulders like a ceremonial cloak. "Accept me as your disciple! I swear to carry out your dark will without hesitation!"Felix nearly dropped his mug. "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Get up off the floor! It's still wet down there, and honestly, I don't think my landlord has swept under the radiator in twenty years.""I will not rise until you grant me sanctuary!" Serena insisted, her eyes wide with desperate resolve. She stared up at him, her heart beating like a trapped bird. "I am but a humble apprentice.
