"Felix," Serena said, stepping in front of him, her body coiled like a spring, her grip white-knuckled on the kitchen knife. "I believe the rent just went up."
Felix stood frozen for a heartbeat, his eyes fixed on the black, viscous liquid seeping under the doorframe. It hissed against the wood, a faint, acrid smell of ozone and wet rot filling the tiny apartment.
"Is that... hydraulic fluid?" Felix asked, his brow furrowed in genuine annoyance. "I swear, if this is Grimaldi trying to cheap out on the hallway renovations again, I am going to lose my mind. That stuff is going to ruin the floorboards."
Serena’s jaw tightened. Hydraulic fluid? The Reborn Master is truly a master of misdirection. He calls the ichor of the undead 'hydraulic fluid' to mock the encroaching darkness. He is so calm it’s terrifying.
"Felix, get back," she hissed, her voice low and dangerous. "Those aren't maintenance workers. They’re leeches. Predators of the night. If they’ve breached the outer ward, it means they’re looking for a fight."
"Predators?" Felix let out a dry, exhausted laugh, stepping around her. "It’s midnight on a Tuesday. The only predators out here are the guys who try to sell you 'organic' juice cleanses for fifty bucks a pop. Stay here. I’ve had a really long day, and I am not in the mood for door-to-door sales."
"Felix, wait! You aren't armed!" Serena lunged to grab his arm, but he was already at the door.
He didn't grab a sword. He didn't summon a dark aura. He reached over, grabbed his heavy-duty, industrial-strength wooden broom from the corner, and yanked the deadbolt back.
"Hey!" Felix shouted, throwing the door wide open. "Keep it down! Some of us have an internship at eight in the morning!"
The hallway was bathed in the flickering, sickly yellow light of a dying overhead bulb. Standing there were three men. Or, at least, they were shaped like men. They were wearing expensive, sharp-cut leather jackets that looked completely out of place in this grimy building, and their eyes—when they turned toward the door—didn't reflect the light. They glowed with a predatory, hungry crimson.
The leader, a guy with slicked-back hair and skin the color of old parchment, was mid-swing, having just slammed a clawed hand through the drywall of the neighbor’s door. He froze, his hand still buried in the plaster, and turned to look at Felix.
"What?" the vampire leader snarled, his voice a gravelly, inhuman rasp. "Did you just address me, mortal?"
"Yeah, I addressed you," Felix said, his face deadpan. He gestured with the broom like he was pointing at a spilled box of cereal. "You’re making a racket. My neighbor is an old guy who just wants to watch his game shows. Can you take your dramatic theater project somewhere else?"
The three vampires exchanged a look of pure, bewildered shock.
"Dramatic... theater project?" The leader slowly pulled his hand out of the wall, letting chunks of drywall crumble to the floor. He bared his teeth, revealing elongated, needle-sharp fangs. "Do you have any idea who we are, little snack? We are the Hollowed Blood. We own these streets."
"I don't care if you own the city planning department," Felix said, his eyes drooping with genuine, soul-crushing boredom. "You’re trespassing. You’re damaging property that I, apparently, have legal jurisdiction over based on my lease. And you’re keeping me awake. Move. Now."
Serena hovered in the doorway behind Felix, her heart hammering against her ribs so hard she felt like she might collapse. He’s doing it again. He’s belittling them. He’s treating ancient, blood-thirsty vampires like they’re minor annoyances. He wants them to draw their weapons so he can unleash his true power.
"I think I’m going to enjoy draining you," the leader hissed, his eyes widening. "You have such a... vibrant, pulsing neck. Tell me, do you taste as sweet as you look?"
"I taste like cheap ramen and exhaustion," Felix replied, shifting his weight. "Seriously, I'm counting to three. If you aren't out of this hallway by the time I hit three, I'm calling the police. And trust me, you do not want to deal with the precinct in this district. They have way too much paperwork and they are miserable, mean people."
The vampires blinked.
"The police?" the leader laughed, a sharp, hacking sound. "You think your mortal law applies to us?"
"One."
"You arrogant little—"
"Two."
The leader’s expression shifted. He scanned Felix’s posture. Felix wasn't tensing up. He wasn't reaching for a weapon. He was just standing there, looking like a tired guy in a stained t-shirt, clutching a broom, looking as bored as a man waiting for a bus.
Why isn't he afraid? the leader thought, his predatory mind whirling. Even the strongest hunters tremble in our presence. This human... he hasn't even blinked. He’s not even looking at our fangs. He’s looking at his watch.
"Three," Felix said.
He didn't pull a gun. He didn't cast a spell. He simply took a single step forward, the broom handle resting casually against his shoulder. He looked the vampire leader dead in the eye, his expression completely blank, devoid of any adrenaline or fear.
"Well?" Felix asked, his voice flat. "Are you going to leave, or do I have to make a call? I've got a direct line to the landlord, and he’s currently in a state of absolute, abject terror of me. Want to see how fast he gets here to drag you out?"
The vampire leader faltered. The air around Felix didn't feel like a normal human. There was a weird, dense weight to him—an absolute, unshakeable confidence that felt like being stared down by an apex predator.
Is he... is he a Greater Elder? the vampire wondered, his skin crawling. Is this a trap? Why is he so calm? No human is this calm. This is the calm of a beast that doesn't need to fight because it knows it has already won.
"You're a strange one," the leader said, his voice losing some of its edge. He took a cautious half-step back. "You have a certain... scent. It’s not human."
"It’s laundry detergent," Felix sighed. "Lavender. Now, get lost."
"Fine," the leader spat, his eyes never leaving Felix’s face. "We didn't want this dump anyway. But remember this, 'roommate'—the night is long, and there are others who won't be as polite as I am."
"Great. Send them to HR," Felix replied.
The vampires turned and melted back into the shadows of the stairwell, moving with a speed that would have been impossible for any normal person.
Felix waited until the sound of their footsteps faded away, then leaned against the doorframe, letting out a breath that sounded like a deflating tire.
"Finally," he muttered, turning around.
He found Serena standing in the doorway, staring at him with her mouth slightly open, her hand still clutching the kitchen knife.
"They... they just left," she whispered, her eyes wide with disbelief.
"I told you," Felix said, walking past her into the apartment and tossing the broom back into the corner. "People are just pushy. You have to set boundaries, Serena. If you let them walk all over you, you’ll never get a decent night’s sleep in this city."
He slumped onto the futon, rubbing his face with his hands.
"I'm going to sleep. Seriously, if the building explodes, just wake me up, otherwise, I'm dead to the world."
Serena stood in the middle of the room, her heart still racing. She looked at his back, at the way he curled up under the blue blanket, oblivious to the fact that he had just stared down a trio of apex predators.
He didn't even use a weapon, she thought, a mixture of terror and overwhelming, breathless admiration washing over her. He stood there with nothing but a broom and the raw, terrifying authority of a man who didn't care if he lived or died. He is the most dangerous, most insane, and most... incredible man I have ever met.
She walked over to the edge of the futon, her hand lingering on the hilt of the kitchen knife. She looked down at him. He was already breathing slowly, deep in the sleep of the truly exhausted.
"You truly are a mystery, Felix," she whispered, her voice soft.
She looked at the empty space on the futon beside him. The space was small, barely enough for a person to sit, let alone sleep. But the Warden of the Sanctum had to stay close. She had to protect him.
And, if she was being entirely honest with herself, she didn't want to be anywhere else.
She sat down on the edge, the fabric sinking under her weight. She placed her knife on the floor, ready to grab at a moment's notice, and pulled the edge of the blanket over her legs.
Just one night, she told herself, her heart fluttering as she watched the steady rise and fall of his chest. To guard his rest. Nothing more.
She leaned back, her head resting against the arm of the futon, and for the first time in her life, the darkness of the room didn't feel like a threat. It felt like a secret.
Felix shifted in his sleep, his hand moving to grip the edge of the blanket. He murmured something, his fingers brushing against hers.
Serena froze, her breath hitching in her throat. She didn't pull away.
He's holding my hand, she thought, her entire body going hot. Is this a test? A pact of eternal bond?
She gently, slowly, let her fingers interlock with his. His hand was warm, heavy, and so incredibly solid.
I will keep you safe, Master, she whispered to the quiet, dark room. Even if it costs me everything.
Outside, the wind howled through the trash-strewn alley, and from somewhere deep in the basement, a low, guttural growl echoed through the pipes. But in apartment 4B, the air was still, quiet, and for the first time in years, Serena Wilde didn't feel like a hunter. She felt like she was home.
"You really are too much, you know that?" she whispered to the sleeping man, a small, genuine smile touching her lips. "Trying to evict vampires with a broom."
Felix didn't answer, only tightened his grip on her hand in his sleep, pulling it slightly closer to his chest. Serena felt the heat of him radiating through her, a steady, rhythmic pulse that calmed the frantic beating of her own heart.
Maybe, she thought, closing her eyes as sleep finally began to pull at her, maybe this is what the legends meant by a life of peace. Or maybe, she thought with a flicker of her old, tactical instinct, maybe I’m just falling for a dark lord who likes to bake cookies.
She decided that, for now, she was okay with both.

Chapter 10: The Boss's Inspection
The door chime of the Crimson Bean didn't just ring; it seemed to resonate with a low, thrumming hum that made Felix’s teeth ache. As he stepped over the threshold, a man emerged from the shadows of the back office. He wasn't the barista. He was a tall, angular man in a charcoal suit that looked like it had been tailored for an undertaker, his gaze sharp enough to peel paint. This was Inquisitor Vance, the Hunter Guild’s premier interrogator. He didn't look at the coffee menu. He looked directly at Felix’s jugular."Serena," Vance said, his voice a cold, smooth rasp. "You’re late. And you’ve brought a guest."Felix wiped his thumb on his jeans, oblivious to the fact that the man in front of him was currently cataloging the most efficient way to disassemble a human skeleton. "Oh, hey. Sorry for the intrusion. I’m just walking my roommate to her shift. And, man, you guys really need to look at your front lighting. It’s flickering like a horror movie set, and the awning is absolutely cov
Chapter 9: Walking the Path of Shadows
The morning sun crawled through the gaping hole where the apartment door used to be, illuminating a glittering cloud of plaster dust that refused to settle. Felix groaned, blinking his eyes open as the hard wooden armrest of the futon dug into his neck. He shifted, realizing his hand was still firmly entwined with Serena’s.She was already awake, hunched over her tactical smartphone, her thumbs blurring across the screen with aggressive precision."Seriously, Serena? It’s six in the morning," Felix croaked, his voice thick with sleep. "Are you still texting about the 'Hollowed Blood' goths? Give it a rest. They’re probably all at home nursing their garlic allergies by now."Serena jumped, nearly dropping her phone. She quickly locked the screen, her face flushing a guilty pink. "I... I am merely documenting the structural vulnerabilities of the sanctum, Felix! My superiors require a full report on the... the 'construction hazards' you navigated last night.""Your theater professors so
Chapter 8: The Legend of the Broom
"Seriously, Serena, how am I supposed to sleep when my entryway looks like a construction zone?" Felix groaned, leaning heavily on the wooden handle of his broom as he pushed a small pile of white drywall dust toward the threshold. "I just wanted to sweep up this mess so we don't track plaster dust all over the carpet. Is that really too much to ask on a Tuesday night?"Serena, sitting cross-legged on the edge of the futon with her knees pulled tightly to her chest, stared at him with wide, unblinking green eyes. "You shouldn't let your guard down, Felix. The forces of the night are devious. They do not simply retreat because you ask them to. They are likely regrouping, calculating your spiritual pressure, and preparing a counter-offensive.""They're theater students in matching leather jackets, Serena," Felix said, let out a long, exhausted sigh. "The only thing they're calculating is how much they spent on hair gel. Besides, they ruined my welcome mat. That was a housewarming gift f

Chapter 6: The Venom of Kindness
The steam from the ramen bowl swirled in the cramped room, carrying with it a scent so warm and inviting that Serena felt her resolve fraying at the edges. She watched Felix move with a casual grace, his movements unburdened by the weight of malice she had spent her life learning to fear."Here you go," Felix said, turning around with a tray. He placed two steaming mugs of chamomile tea down and a small ceramic plate piled high with golden-brown cookies. "Sorry it’s not exactly gourmet, but I figured you could use something sweet after that whole incident with the pipes."Serena stared at the plate. The cookies were thick, studded with semi-melted pools of dark chocolate, and still warm enough to make the air around them shimmer."You baked these?" she asked, her voice tight."Yeah, took a tray out right before the ceiling started leaking," Felix said, pulling up a wooden stool. "I’m a bit of a stress-baker. It helps me focus when I’m dealing with... well, everything."Stress-baking,
Chapter 5: The Undercover Apprentice
"Please, Lord Knight!" Serena gasped, suddenly dropping to her knees. Her tactical boots made a wet squelch against the rug as she bowed her head, the white towel draped over her shoulders like a ceremonial cloak. "Accept me as your disciple! I swear to carry out your dark will without hesitation!"Felix nearly dropped his mug. "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Get up off the floor! It's still wet down there, and honestly, I don't think my landlord has swept under the radiator in twenty years.""I will not rise until you grant me sanctuary!" Serena insisted, her eyes wide with desperate resolve. She stared up at him, her heart beating like a trapped bird. "I am but a humble apprentice. I have been cast out by my guild—the High Order of... of Dramatic Arts! They have stripped me of my lodge, and my master has declared me a rogue initiate. If you do not take me in, the forces of the High Council will hunt me down and purge my registry!"Felix blinked, his brain straining to process the sheer volume of
