9: Underestimated man

Noah walked out of the Giles family's villa. He couldn't stop thinking about Aria’s attitude towards him. He just wanted to help anyway. It was truly none of his concern to begin with. He was a hired boyfriend after all.

So, he would stop bothering about it.

His phone rang suddenly. It was Gilbert.

Noah wondered why he was calling or was Jennifer around already?

He picked up the call immediately. “Hello.”

“Cedric, are you free at the moment to talk?”

“Yes, is something wrong? Have you been able to contact Jennifer?”

“Not yet, boss, which is why I have called. I don't think you will be able to meet her today. I've sent someone to her house and her office though because I'm disturbed. She's never this unreachable. Maybe she traveled,” he explained.

Noah nodded slightly. “It's ok actually. I will wait for her.”

“Alright boss. If you need anything, please don't hesitate to call me.”

Noah smiled. “Alright,” he finished and hung up.

Somehow, it felt like a good day to him even though he had yet to meet Jennifer. But it wasn't every day that he would have a fifty-million-dollar cheque with him.

He should find a nice restaurant to eat at.

He flagged down a taxi and stopped at a nearby restaurant. He hesitated slightly in front of it and reminisced about the old bad days.

When was the last time he was able to afford a better meal? The only thing he survived on were junks because it saved money.

And the money he saved was mainly for Chloe. So, at the end of the month, he was always left with nothing. And where? Just where has that led him to?

The restaurant didn't have a name but it was peaceful. Not too crowded, just perfect vibes.

Noah settled down and ordered most of the food on the menu. And he ate to his satisfaction. It had been so long that he had almost forgotten what a good meal tasted like.

He relaxed, filled up, and felt so good about it.

His phone beeped suddenly. It was a message from Aria.

It read; Grandpa wants you to move into the house today. I've sent you half the amount we agreed on. Please, come home today and I will also be around with a fake marriage certificate.

Noah sighed. This means he would have to go to Gilbert's house to get his belongings.

Aside from that, since he wasn't seeing Jennifer that day, he should use the opportunity to withdraw some of the money Gilbert had given him.

Besides, he had no idea when he would eventually be able to meet Jennifer.

“Here's your bill,” one of the waitresses said suddenly, pulling him out of his thoughts.

He looked up, with a smile and took the bill from her. The amount was quite huge. If it were before, he would have been perturbed about it. But not anymore, that was all in the past now.

Noah gave her cash. The lady counted it and saw that it was slightly overboard.

“Your money_”

“Keep the rest,” Noah muttered calmly, with a soft smile, stood up, and walked out of the restaurant.

He flagged down a taxi to the bank.

“Look who has come to the bank!” a deep voice teased just as he stepped inside,

That was a normal routine actually. Everyone looked down on him wherever he went. He actually used to think Chloe was the only one who saw potential in him but guess he was wrong about that as well.

Philip was his classmate in school and he was aware he couldn't even collect his certificate because he still owned the school. So, he looks down on him at every given point.

Unlike Noah, Philip got a job as a banker the moment he graduated. This made him more prideful

“Chloe’s one and only sweetheart,” Mark mocked.

Mark was Philip's friend and somehow, they had both decided to make his matter their business.

“It's a pity Chloe left him for Oliver.”

How did they even get their information? They work at the bank for long hours, yet they know what's going on around the city.

“I'm not here for you today. I want to withdraw.”

“Withdraw?” Philip feigned surprise. “Weren't you fired?”

“He was?” Mark laughed.

“Then, how did you get the money?

Noah released an exasperated sigh. “Will you do the job you are being employed for and attend to me?”

Mark and Philip regarded themselves for a moment before they both burst into laughter.

A young woman moved forward and Philip started to attend to her.

“Alright, bring it,” Mark said finally when there was no one to attend to.

Noah moved closer and stretched out the cheque to him. Mark took it but instead placed it on the desk, with a smile.

“Why don't you play some more with us since you are now jobless?”

“Noah feigned annoyance. “See, don't get on my nerves. Today is a good day for me already.”

“Or what? What will you do?”

“Or what's so good about today? You are a broke, homeless, and jobless man. To top it all, you don't even have a love interest.”

“Your girl dumped you for a rich man!” Mark laughed aloud, supporting Philip in his mockery.

“Hello,” a rich baritone voice greeted from behind Noah. It was a man dressed in expensive clothes, one of the bank's important people.

The workers recognized him instantly, including Noah. It doesn't matter how long the queue is, the man was always favoured because he always tipped Philip.

“Please, come here,” Mark beckoned to him instantly, ignoring Noah completely.

“What do you guys think you are doing? I came first, you are supposed to attend to me first,” Noah protested, his voice raised slightly.

Several times, the man has always cheated him,

Philip looked around, seeing that people were now looking at him. He took his cheque. “Let's see the peanut he came to withdraw.” His eyes widened in shock as he stared at the amount on the cheque. “No way this is real!”

Mark turned to him. “What's wrong?”

“You can't believe this fool is here with fifty million dollars Cheque!” he laughed then stiffened immediately. “It must be theft. I'm calling the police on you immediately!”

“How dare you come here with a stolen cheque!”

“You saw my name on it, didn't you? How was it stolen then?”

Mark laughed. “Hilarious! As if you can afford a few thousand, talk more of a million. Call the manager. I will call the security.”

Philip took the telephone and punched some buttons before placing the phone against his ears. “Manager, there's someone here with a stolen cheque of fifty million dollars!” Philip reported while Mark called the security as well.

Noah sighed. They didn't even check the cheque before concluding he stole it. These people were hilarious. They always want to believe he would never make it.

Almost immediately, several security men rushed inside.

“The bank is closed!” one of the men yelled. “Everyone leave now!” he continued. “Everyone except Noah!”

Wait what! Are these people here to take him?

Only three people in the city owned the VIP black Alpha card from Heritage Bank. The President, Leonardo, and Alaric heir. But who would have thought the son of Alaric would come to his restaurant that night? And an ordinary waiter couldn't even recognise the famous Alaric Cedric!“But sir, the card was declined. I swiped it and it didn't even recognise it,” the waiter explained.“This is why you need to be extra careful whenever you are at work. This isn't a regular card,” he continued, his voice dropping into something edged. “It's encrypted. You don't swipe it, you authenticate it.”Encrypted? What does that mean?Martin didn't answer immediately. Instead, he took the machine from him with controlled patience, like someone correcting a costly mistake. Then, he placed the card flat against the reader.A soft beep cut through the silence.Everyone froze.Martin's eyes flicked to the screen. For a moment, he just stared, then a smile spread across his face.“Payment of forty-five thou

“Yes, sure. His order is $45,000.”Richard's throat went dry. His lips parted, but no words came out first. He dragged a hand down his face forcing himself to breathe as every eye in the room turned towards him. “Who_who hasn't opened their wine yet?” he asked, his voice tight, almost cracking.“Everyone has!” Linda answered quickly, her tone laced with rising fear. “Every single bottle.”A ripple of unease spread across the table.Richard let out a hollow laugh, shaking his head. “That's insane. Where am I supposed to get that kind of money from? My budget was $100,000.”Noah leaned back slightly, a faint, almost amused smile playing on his lips. “Well, I tried to warn you,” he said calmly. “But you didn't listen.”Richard snapped his head towards him, irritation flashing. “Why don't you speak for yourself!” he shot back. “It's not as if you can afford your bill.”Noah's smile didn't fade, it sharpened. “Who said I can't?" Noah replied. “I am nothing like you.”“Oh please,.” Violet

Everyone stared, as if trying to find out if it was fake. Then, they relaxed.Noah pocketed his phone, with satisfaction. For a second, no one said anything. Then, Violet let out a soft laugh.“Wow, you've finally gotten it,” She feigned surprise, and her lips slightly curled into a fake smile. She tilted her head, eyes running over him slowly. “How many years later is that?”A few people chuckled.“Don't get me wrong,” she added lightly. “It's nice, really. Everyone deserved a second chance.”NoH stared at her. No matter what he did, they would always think low of him and find flimsy reasons to back it up. He was not surprised. They had always been like that.“She's right,” Richarded added suddenly, supporting Violet. “Let's not act like this is some big moment,” he said, glancing around the room. “A certificate is the minimum requirement, not exactly an achievement.”A couple of heads nodded, agreeing with him.Violet smiled with victory. “Exactly! We all have one,” She gestured laz

“But we can settle this_” Tiffany started.“In Court,” Noah completed. “For intentional destruction of property of this value.”“It's fair,” the man added quickly. “Perhaps you have something of value too, aside from your BMW car because it's just going to handle the side mirror.”Tiffany thought for a moment, her heart beat accelerated. Then, she remembered something. “Rose’s necklace. It's a Graff Diamond necklace and is worth three million dollars. It can sort it and we will still have some change remaining.”Rose hesitated as if thinking about it but slowly shook her head. “Please, not the necklace,” She begged softly. The man moved closer nonetheless. “Can I see the serial number?”Rose paused. “Serial number?”“Don't tell me you don't know what that is.”Rose took the necklace off and did a quick check. There was no serial number anywhere. She looked up at the man again, as tears welled up in her eyes. The man shook his head in pity and slowly backed off. “Can't work, that's a f

Then, she turned to Tiffany. “Come, join me.”“Ma'am!” The guard froze. “You need to stop!”Ignoring the guard, Tiffany removed one of her stilettos and smashed the side mirror with its pointed side.“That is,” Rose started, turning towards Noah. “_what being stubborn is.”Tiffany laughed. “Relax, we will pay for it.”“Yeah,” Rose added. “Don't start crying now. How much could it possibly be?”Noah smiled softly. “Do you know the value of the car? Let alone the windshield you have broken?”“Of course,” Rose rolled her eyes. “Maybe at most $30,000,” she said with disdain. “Isn't it just Mercedes? It's something I can afford, so don't fret. I will pay for it,” she uttered, tossed the bat aside, and moved to grab her purse. She pulled out a card from inside it and stretched it out. “There's a sum of $30,000 in the card. Use it.
