CHAPTER 9

Nobody spoke for a long time.

The blue light had faded completely, leaving us in near darkness. My optical implants adjusted, giving me a faint green-tinted view of the chamber. Rourke and Sena had lit small lamps, casting weak orange light across the ancient metal structure.

I stared at my palm.

2 YEARS, 33 DAYS, 12 HOURS.

A lie. My whole life was a lie. Every fear. Every desperate moment of survival. Every time I'd watched the numbers tick down and felt that cold dread in my chest. None of it was real.

The District had done this. They had built the timers, given them to everyone, and let us believe we were dying. They controlled us through fear. Through desperation. Through the constant threat of death.

I felt my mechanical hand clench into a fist.

"Nova." Dr. REN-9's voice was quiet. Careful. "We should move. That thing could wake up again."

"It's not waking up," I said. "It was talking. To me."

"I know. That's what concerns me."

Nyx-0 moved closer, its wolf form solid and watchful. "She's right. We need to leave. That thing is old and unstable. I don't trust it."

I looked at the wolf. "It said it was the last memory of the First Humans."

"It's lying."

"How do you know?"

"Because I'm the last memory of the First Humans. Not that thing."

I stared at Nyx-0. "What?"

"It's a fragment. A piece of the Celestial Forge. But I'm the memory. I carry the knowledge. The truth. Everything."

The blue light pulsed once more, faint and weak. Then it went dark completely. The structure seemed to settle, sinking deeper into the ground.

"Whatever it was," Dr. REN-9 said, "it's gone now."

I looked at the ancient metal. At the symbols carved into its surface. At the thing that had spoken to me.

"How do I find out if it's true?" I asked. "About the timers."

"Find someone whose timer has run out," Nyx-0 said.

"What?"

"If the timers are a lie, then the District must be faking the deaths. People whose timers hit zero are supposedly recycled. But if the timers are fake, they're not dying. They're being taken somewhere."

I processed that. "I need proof."

"Exactly."

Rourke cleared his throat. "We have a contact. Someone who worked for the District. She might know something."

"Where is she?"

"The Red Bazaar. She runs an information trade there."

"The Red Bazaar is dangerous," Dr. REN-9 said. "It's full of criminals, scavengers, and District spies."

"I don't care. I need to know."

She studied me for a long moment. "I'll take you. But we need to move quickly. The District will be searching this area."

I looked at the ancient structure one last time.

"How do you feel?" I asked Nyx-0.

"Weird. That thing was connected to me. Somehow. I don't like it."

"It felt like it was trying to tell me something."

"It was trying to manipulate you. The Celestial Forge was powerful, but it was also dangerous. That's why it was destroyed."

"By the District?"

"By the First Humans. They realized what they'd created. They tried to stop it. They failed."

I felt something heavy settle in my chest. The weight of history. The weight of truth.

"We need to find that contact," I said.

Dr. REN-9 nodded. "Follow me."

---

We climbed back through the tunnels, moving fast. The air grew warmer as we ascended, and I could smell rust and dust again. The surface.

When we emerged, the Bone Yard was covered in darkness. The sky was a deep gray, dotted with faint stars. In the distance, I could see the faint glow of the Spire. The District's heart.

"We should travel at night," Dr. REN-9 said. "Safer. Fewer patrols."

"How far to the Red Bazaar?"

"Two days. Maybe three."

"I can make it."

She looked at my arm. "Your repairs are holding?"

"Yes."

"Good. Let's move."

We walked through the darkness, our footsteps crunching against rusted metal. Nyx-0 stayed close, its wolf form silent and watchful.

"You're processing a lot," Nyx-0 said quietly.

"You think?"

"Your sarcasm is improving. I'm proud."

I almost smiled. Almost.

"What happens when I find the truth?" I asked. "When I prove the timers are a lie?"

"Chaos. People will be angry. They'll fight. The District will try to stop them."

"And Nexus?"

"What about him?"

"He was close to finding this out. That's why they took him."

"Yes."

I felt something burn in my chest. Not my ribs. Something deeper.

"They killed him for it. They erased him."

"Yes."

"I'm going to make them pay."

Nyx-0 was silent for a long moment.

"I know," it said.

We walked in silence.

---

We reached a small structure, half-buried in the rust. Dr. REN-9 pressed a panel and a door slid open.

"Rest here," she said. "We'll move again at dawn."

I lay down on the cold metal floor. My body ached. My mind was spinning.

The timers are a lie.

Everything I believed was a lie.

I looked at my wrist. At Nexus's watch.

I couldn't remember his face. But I could remember his voice.

"One day," I whispered. "I'm going to remember everything."

The watch glinted faintly in the darkness.

Nyx-0 lay beside me, its burning-star eyes closed.

"One day," it echoed.

  • Chapter 20: Wanted

I read the poster twice before the words stopped sliding around.WANTED FOR TREASON AND CORE THEFT. REWARD, TEN THOUSAND CORES. ALIVE.Ten thousand Cores. One Core could feed me for a month. I had spent my whole life digging through rust for scraps worth a hundredth of that."It's the Resistance's mark," I said. My voice sounded strange in my own ears. "The circle with three lines.""It could be forged," Mira said. She was already stuffing her tablet into her coat. "The District has the mark on file. They've used it before to turn us against each other.""Could be.""But?"I looked at the note again. Bring me the creature. The boy is optional.Nyx-0 had been curled at the foot of my bedroll. It rose now, wolf-shaped, its burning-star eyes fixed on the paper. "That handwriting is not District," it said in my head. "The District writes in printed blocks. Somebody wrote this by hand.""Somebody who wants you and not me.""Somebody who knows what I am."Dr. REN-9 came through the tent fla

  • Chapter 19: Who Heard

We reached the first scavenger camp at dawn.I knew it before I saw it. The smell came first: burnt oil, boiled scrap-moss, and too many people packed into too little space. Then the walls appeared out of the orange haze, a ring of welded Beast plating with a gate made from a single enormous jawbone."Ashfall Camp," Mira said. "Four hundred people. They're on the repeater line, so they should have caught part of the broadcast.""Should have," I said."That's the best I can give you."Kira stopped at the edge of the dust and studied the gate. "I'll stay out here. If the District has eyes on this place, they'll be watching for a group. Better if I'm not part of it.""You're the one who wanted us to move fast," I said."And I still do. Go in, find out what they know, and come back before the sun clears the ridge."She said it smoothly, and it made sense. I still didn't like it.Nyx-0 pressed against my leg, small again, cat-shaped, pretending to be something a scavenger would keep for co

  • Chapter 18: The Silence After

The Spire fell quiet. Not the good kind of quiet. Not the kind where you win and everyone cheers. This was the kind where you shout into a canyon and the canyon doesn't answer.I stood at the top of the broadcast platform with smoke rising off my arm and stared at the sky.Nothing happened. No sirens. No riots. No crowds pouring into the streets."Mira," I said. "Did it work?"She didn't answer. She was bent over the control panel, her hood shoved back, her fingers flying across the keys. Her face had gone pale."Mira.""It went out," she said. "The signal left the tower. I watched it leave.""Then why is nobody screaming?"She looked up. "Because somebody caught it."I didn't like the way she said that.~ ~ ~We didn't wait around to find out who.Dr. REN-9 grabbed my sleeve and dragged me toward the elevator. The soldiers who had surrendered were already backing away, tapping their wrists, whispering into their collars. Zero-One had vanished somewhere in the chaos. That should have

  • CHAPTER 18

Zero-One raised his hand. The soldiers moved. White armor. Unblinking eyes. They came at us like a wave, weapons raised, boots thundering against the polished floor.I didn't think. I just moved. My mechanical arm came up, and I fired. The energy pulse hit the first soldier square in the chest. He flew backward, crashing into the others behind him. But more kept coming. They were everywhere.Nyx-0 moved like shadow, faster than I'd ever seen it. Its wolf form tore through the soldiers, teeth and claws and burning-star eyes. It took down three before they could even react.Dr. REN-9 was beside me, her device raised. A burst of light shot out, blinding the soldiers closest to us. Mira was running toward the broadcast tower, her fingers already working on the control panel."Cover me!" she shouted.I turned and fired again. Another soldier went down."Zero-One!" I shouted. The man in white was still standing at the top of the stairs, watching. Calm. Unbothered. Like he knew how this woul

  • CHAPTER 17

Dawn came fast. Too fast.I hadn't slept again. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Nexus standing at the Spire, alone, waiting for Zero-One. I saw him fall. I saw them take him away.I couldn't let that happen to me.The Resistance members were already moving when I opened my eyes. Packing bags. Checking weapons. Mira stood at the entrance, watching the horizon."The tunnel entrance is half a mile from here," she said without turning. "We move now, or we don't move at all."I stood up. My ribs ached. My arm hummed. "Let's go."---We moved through the Bone Yard in silence. The sun was still low, casting long shadows across the rust. The air was cold and sharp.Mira led us to a collapsed structure half-buried in debris. She pressed a panel on the wall, and a section of the floor slid open, revealing a dark hole."The tunnel," she said. "It runs for miles beneath the surface. It'll take us close to the Spire.""How close?" I asked."Within a mile. We'll have to travel above ground for t

  • CHAPTER 15

We left the Red Bazaar and moved fast. Mira led us through narrow alleys and hidden passages, moving like someone who knew every corner of the Bone Yard. Her hood was pulled low, hiding her face. But I could see her eyes. Sharp. Watchful. "The Spire is three days from here," she said. "Maybe more. The terrain is dangerous, and the District patrols heavily." "I don't care how long it takes," I said. "You should. Every day you delay, the District gets stronger." I looked at my wrist. At the watch. "Then we move faster." Mira stopped and turned to face me. "You really are like him." "Who?" "Nexus. He used to say the same thing. Always pushing. Always moving." I felt a strange warmth in my chest. "What happened to him?" She was quiet for a moment. "He got too close. The District knew he was coming. They were waiting for him." "Where?" "At the Spire. He was trying to do the same thing you're trying to do now." I stared at her. "He tried to broadcast the truth?" "Yes. He almo
