Chapter 1 Breakup

"You miserable lowlife! Just get the hell out of my house!" Angela screamed. She dragged an overstuffed duffle bag out into the living room.

"Please, Angie," Nathan said. "We can work this out..." He pleaded in a docile tone, trying to calm his girlfriend down. She had never been this furious with him before.

"Work out what? Your bankruptcy? How do you plan on doing that when your bank balance is zero?"

Nathan hung his head since he was at fault. His salary had been delayed by over a week due to accounting issues. He had promised Angela a new dress for a party she was hosting in the apartment. Therefore, his girlfriend exploded when he came home to inform her that she'd have to wait another week.

"Go and live on the streets where you belong! I am done with you! We are done!"

"But I got this apartment for us-"

"Shut the fuck up, Nathan! How long was I going to listen to your excuses? I left my parents' mansion home to live with you, hoping your business ideas would take off soon. But everything failed, and now you're working late shifts in a grocery store."

"Your salary can barely get me a few cosmetics, and I can purchase only one new dress every week! I can't live like this anymore!"

Nathan looked at her helplessly. Indeed, his life had not turned out the way he had expected. He was a brilliant, dynamic boy in college, and everyone told him he'd be successful. Therefore, a beautiful girl like Angela hooked up with him in the first place.

After a year of savings, he managed to lease an apartment in Angela's name; she splurged all his salary on her shopping, leaving little to save or spend.

"Don't you feel shame, Nathan?" she asked, dragging his luggage to the door. "Guys younger than you want to ask me out, take me on luxurious holidays, and buy me expensive clothes. Why do I have to be stuck with a loser like you?"

Angela slammed open the door and threw his luggage out. "Get out!"

"Please, Angie... I beg you..."

His girlfriend poked him in the chest. "Get out, or I'll call the police."

Nathan walked out, and she slammed the door shut behind him.

It was terrible being kicked out of the house he had paid for. But he could no longer tolerate the look of disgust in her eyes for him. He had to get away.

Nathan went to the nearest bar, sat in a dark corner, and ordered a drink. What was the point of being sober if all he got was hatred from the woman he loved?

He took out the last few bills in his wallet, which fetched him a bottle of cheap rum. The bartender cast him a belittling look but gave him a bowl of chips as a compliment.

'Am I that miserable now?' Nathan thought with a sarcastic grin. He downed half the bottle and was soon drunk. Running his fingers through his hair, he thought about Angela, her soft lips, and her sensual body. Her luxuriant hair and her silky voice. He'd miss it all.

"Damn it!" Nathan howled, banging the table and letting his bottle spill all over. The bouncer threw him out of the bar for making a mess.

However, the liquor had already given him much-needed courage. If only he could explain himself and swear to her that he'd work harder, Angela would take him back.

Nathan staggered toward the apartment with renewed vigour. He won't let their long relationship collapse over a dress. He'll work overtime and cut most expenditures to meet her needs.

'Angie was furious, but now that hours have passed, she'll have calmed down," he told himself. He heard music in the corridor as he walked out of the lift. Was Angela already hosting her party?

Nathan took a deep breath and pushed the door ajar. Inside was a group of well-dressed men and women with drinks in their hands. Some of them danced slowly while others nibbled on finger foods. Compared to them,

Nathan looked like a homeless man.

He staggered inside, drawing scornful looks from the party people.

"Angie?" he called out aloud, his voice a slur. Someone stopped the music, and the chatter ceased.

"Nathan?" her voice came from the left. When he turned, the scene hit him like a brick.

Angela was in the arms of a wealthy-looking man in an Armani suit. His lips were on her neck, and her hand was on her right butt cheek.

"What the hell is this?" Nathan barked. "What's going on, Angie?"

His ex-girlfriend excused herself from the gentleman and approached him in a huff.

"Didn't I throw you out a few hours ago? Why have you come back?"

"I... I wanted to apologise... and beg you to take me back...

"What the hell are you talking about?" Angie barked. "Stop dreaming! We're never getting back together again!"

Nathan turned to the smartly dressed gentleman. "Who is he…? Who is this man? Why were you letting him touch you so intimately?"

Angela crossed her arms. "That's Collins. He is my boyfriend. And who touches me is none of your business!"

Nathan became perplexed at Angie's words, his shoulders dropped down in surrender.

"Since when has this started, Angie?" he asked to be sure his mind wasn't trying to make him hate her for nothing.

No matter how he tried to listen to his instinct, he shrugged the idea off his head at that moment. He refused to believe that Angie had been cheating on him while he was still in the house.

Nathan was still drowned in his thoughts when he flinched in a blink. His clothes were soaked in red, the content from the glass of wine. He slowly lifted his gaze only for it to get honed with a glaring pair of eyes. Those eyes belonged to no one but Angie.

"Are you drunk? Get out now or have a cause to regret!" Although she spoke in her usual alluring voice the coldness and warning were visible in her tone.

“What's happening? Who is he?" Collins demanded.

Angie flinched," he's nothing, just some kind of leech."

" You should trash it! Not permitting it to suck your blood.“

Nathan knew he was being referred to as the leech, hence he decided to be a gentleman by leaving. The guests murmured humiliations at him, further driving him into depression. Just as he was about to step out of the room, he had a change of mind.

He swirled around dragging his gaze one more time at Angie, with his clenched fist digging into his thighs.

"One day you'll regret this, Angie!" he said, before storming out of the room.

“Regret what?" Angie repeated with a raging flame in her eyes.

" Dear why don't we teach him a lesson?"
