Chapter 2: First Kill's Gift

I stood there in the dark tunnel, my heart hammering against my ribs. The black stone still burned in my palm like a live coal. Those floating blue words would not go away no matter how many times I blinked.

Warning. Stronger essence detected nearby. Prepare.

The growl grew louder. It shook dust from the ceiling and made my teeth rattle. The two glowing red eyes moved closer. They were set in a massive head covered with thick scales. A long snout pushed out from the shadows, dripping with sticky saliva. This was no ordinary beast. It looked like something the old stories warned children about — a ruin guardian, half lizard, half nightmare.

I took a slow step back. My legs felt different now. Stronger. The power from those three men still hummed in my blood. But facing this thing alone made my mouth go dry.

The creature roared and charged.

I barely had time to think. My body moved on its own. I jumped to the side just as its jaws snapped shut where my head had been a second ago. Stone chips flew everywhere. I rolled across the ground and came up fast. My fist flew out before I could stop it.

Primordial Strike activated.

My knuckles slammed into the side of its head. The impact made a loud crack. The beast staggered sideways and shook its head, stunned for a moment. Black blood trickled from a cut above its eye.

I stared at my hand. It did not even hurt. The System words flashed again.

You have injured a level 7 ruin guardian.

Essence leak detected. Absorb to grow.

The hunger came back, sharper this time. It pulled at me from inside, whispering that I needed to finish this. I wanted to run, but my feet stayed planted. Part of me knew the truth — if I ran now, it would chase me down and tear me apart.

The guardian recovered and swung its heavy tail. I ducked low. The tail smashed into the wall behind me and brought down more rocks. I saw my chance. I jumped onto its back and drove my elbow into the soft spot behind its head.

It screamed. The sound was so loud it hurt my ears.

I kept hitting. Each strike felt easier than the last. Warm energy started flowing into me with every blow. The blue words kept updating.

Strength +1

Agility +1

New skill progress: Primordial Strike 12%

The beast bucked wildly and threw me off. I hit the ground hard, but I got up faster than I ever could before. My ribs ached, yet the pain felt far away. The guardian turned to face me again, breathing heavy. Its red eyes looked smaller now, less sure.

I did not wait. I ran straight at it and leaped. My hands grabbed its throat. Power surged through my arms as I squeezed. The scales cut into my skin, but I did not let go. The hunger grew until it drowned out everything else.

Devour.

The word echoed in my head like a command I could not ignore.

I pressed harder. The guardian thrashed and clawed at my arms, but its strength faded fast. With one final twist, its neck broke. Hot energy rushed into my body like a river breaking its banks. It felt so good it scared me.

You have slain a level 7 ruin guardian.

Major essence absorbed.

Level up! You are now level 3.

All stats +2

New skill unlocked: Scale Armor (Passive)

Primordial System grows stronger with every life taken.

I dropped to my knees beside the dead beast. My breathing came fast and rough. The floating words danced in front of me, showing new numbers that looked much better than before.

Host: Zephyr Kaelith

Level: 3

Strength: 11

Agility: 10

Vitality: 8

I touched the black stone again. It felt cooler now, almost satisfied. But deep down I knew this was only the start. The System wanted more. It always would.

Then I heard it — footsteps. Many of them. Voices shouted from the tunnel entrance behind me.

"Over here! The guardian is dead!"

"Someone got to the inner chamber first!"

I stood up slowly. My hands were covered in blood, and the dead beast lay at my feet like a trophy. These new arrivals sounded like a full scavenging team, maybe twenty men or more. They carried torches and weapons. If they saw what I had done, they would not ask questions. They would kill me for the relic and the loot.

I looked at the dark path ahead that led deeper into the ruins. The System words appeared once more, glowing softly.

New quest available: Escape the hunters or face them.

Reward: Hidden primordial shard.

The voices grew louder. Torchlight flickered on the walls.

I had seconds to decide.

My legs tensed, ready to run, but part of me wondered how strong I could become if I stayed and fought them all.

What should I do?

Chapter 28: The Trial of Echoes Dawn broke cold and gray over the village. The sky was heavy with clouds that promised snow. I stood outside Elder Thorne's hut, watching the village wake. Lira joined me, her face pale but determined. "Today is the day," she said. I nodded. "The Trial of Echoes. Whatever that means." Elder Thorne emerged from his hut, dressed in ceremonial robes. Two other elders flanked him, carrying staffs topped with glowing crystals. The villagers gathered in the central square, their faces solemn. Even the children were quiet. Elder Thorne approached us. "The first trial begins now. The Trial of Echoes tests your mind — your ability to resist illusion, deception, and the voices of the past. Many have failed here, lost in their own memories." He handed me a small stone, similar to the ward he'd given us the night before, but larger and etched with more complex runes. "This will guide you. Follow the path it illuminates. Do not stray. Do not speak to anything

Chapter 27: The Village of EchoesThe night in the village was the first peaceful sleep we'd had in weeks. I woke to the smell of fresh bread and the sound of children laughing outside. Lira was already up, sitting by the window and watching the village come to life."They seem so… normal," she said when she noticed I was awake. "After everything we've been through, it's strange to see people just living their lives."I sat up and stretched. My body still ached from the Wraith fight, but the new Fear Resistance skill made me feel steadier.[Primordial System message: You have entered the domain of the Forgotten Mountains. The village is protected by ancient pacts. Violence here is forbidden.]I kept that to myself. No need to worry Lira.Elder Thorne knocked on the door and entered with his wife, carrying trays of food. Hot porridge, fresh eggs, and a strange blue fruit that tasted like honey and berries mixed together."Eat well," he said. "The trials begin at dawn tomorrow. You will

Chapter 26: The Whispering Pass The pass narrowed as we climbed. On both sides, steep cliffs rose like black teeth biting into the sky. The wind howled through the gaps, carrying whispers that sounded almost like voices. Lira shivered and pulled her cloak tighter around her. "Do you hear that?" she asked, her voice low. I nodded. The whispers were faint but constant. They seemed to come from the rocks themselves. [Primordial System message: The pass is protected by ancient wards. The whispers are echoes of past Anomalies who failed the trials ahead.] I kept the message to myself. No need to worry Lira more than she already was. The path twisted and turned. Sometimes it disappeared completely under loose scree, sometimes it became so narrow that we had to press our backs to the rock face and shuffle sideways. Every few steps, old runes glowed faintly on the cliffs, reacting to our presence. We stopped for a short rest on a flat ledge. Lira sat with her back against the rock, bre

Chapter 25: The Edge of the Wild The days blurred together as we pushed deeper into the Eldrath Forest. Each morning we woke early, ate whatever we could find or hunt, and kept moving toward the distant mountains the System pointed out in my mind. The trees grew taller and thicker, their branches forming a green roof that blocked most of the sunlight. The ground was soft with moss and fallen leaves, making our steps almost silent. Lira had grown stronger from the constant walking, but she still tired faster than I did. I carried her on my back for long stretches when her legs gave out. The new power from the Heart made my body feel tireless, but I was careful not to push too hard. The hunger was always there, whispering in the back of my mind, waiting for any excuse to break free. [Primordial System update: Distance to Forgotten Mountains reduced to 8 days. Essence density in the forest has increased. Stronger guardians expected.] The message appeared in its usual calm tone. I kep

Chapter 24: The Silent WatchThe fire had burned low by the time I woke Lira for her watch. The forest was quiet except for the soft rustle of leaves and the distant call of night birds. I lay down on the soft moss under the tree roots, but sleep did not come easily. The new power from the Heart still hummed in my veins, making every small sound sharper.[Primordial System update: Distance to Forgotten Mountains reduced to 10 days. Wild essence density increasing.]The message appeared clearly in my mind, calm and cold as always. I closed my eyes and tried to rest. The Hunger Suppression skill kept the constant whisper at bay, but I could still feel it there — waiting, patient, hungry.Lira sat with her back against the tree, dagger in her lap. She looked small in the darkness, but her eyes were alert. Every few minutes she glanced at me, as if checking that I was still the same person who had saved her in Valthor.Morning came too soon. Chapter 23: Whispers of the WildThe next morning came with a soft gray light filtering through the thick forest canopy. I woke up first, my body already feeling the pull to move. The new power from the Heart of the Primordial made everything sharper — sounds, smells, even the way the leaves moved in the breeze. Lira was still asleep, curled up against the cave wall with my cloak over her.I stepped outside the cave and looked around. The canyon we had crossed yesterday was far behind us now. The forest here felt older, wilder. Tall trees with thick trunks blocked most of the sky. Vines hung like curtains, and strange glowing flowers grew on the ground in small patches. The System gave a quiet update.Distance to Forgotten Mountains: 11 days.Warning: Wild essence detected in the area. Strong beasts may appear.I did not like the warning, but at least we had gained a little distance from Auric and the Duke’s men.
